Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 1052 AM MST Fri Dec 1 2023 ...New AVIATION... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 213 AM MST Fri Dec 1 2023 Periods of snow, blowing snow, and areas of fog will continue over northern and western NM through tonight. A few more inches of snow are expected, especially on west-facing slopes above 7,500 feet. Cold temperatures and blowing snow may lead to difficult travel at times, especially overnight tonight in the higher terrain. Strong northwest winds will continue over the region Saturday and Sunday. Gusts of 35 to 50 mph are possible along and east of the central mountain chain. Winds will taper off Monday and Tuesday with warming temperatures and some passing high clouds. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Saturday) Issued at 213 AM MST Fri Dec 1 2023 One wave sliding east through northern NM early this morning while another is on approach from central and southern AZ. The AZ wave will result in another round of lower elevation rain and high terrain snow for western and northern NM today. Snow levels will remain near 6,000 feet today, lowering to near 5,500 feet tonight. Will leave winter weather highlights as is given the continuation of the wave train. CAM's keying in on orographic snow for tonight, but as recent waves have shown, plentiful low level moisture is able to combine with a statically unstable airmass and terrain blocking to result in precipitation at times in the lower elevations. Heaviest snow amounts are forecast along west facing slopes of the western and northern mountains through tonight where up to a foot is possible along the west slopes of the Brazos south to Canjilon Mountain and lakes area. Flow aloft becomes more northwesterly Saturday morning, resulting in not only drier air aloft moving in, but brisk west and northwest winds along and east of the central mountain chain Saturday afternoon. High temperatures remain below to well below seasonal averages central and west Saturday, warming to near average east thanks to downsloping west winds. && .LONG TERM... (Saturday night through Thursday) Issued at 213 AM MST Fri Dec 1 2023 Strong west/northwest winds will continue in the high terrain thru Saturday night. 700-500mb layer winds increase to near 55 kt with a strong mt wave signature evident in hi-res model cross sections thru the Sangre de Cristo Mts. Localized high wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible along the immediate east slopes from Raton to Las Vegas and Clines Corners. Strong winds will spread to more of eastern NM again on Sunday with Wind Advisory conditions likely. Downslope flow will help max temps warm several degrees. Strong mt wave action continues Sunday night along the east slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mts. The rest of central and western NM will stay cool with breezy afternoon winds thru Sunday. A more tranquil weather pattern is expected to begin Monday with lighter winds in all areas except perhaps around Clines Corners. Temps will trend warmer however thick cirrus sliding overhead may put the better warming on hold until Tuesday. The remainder of next week looks beautiful as an unseasonably strong 585dm H5 ridge slides east over NM. Expect mainly snow showers with MVFR to IFR cigs/vsbys to expand in number and areal coverage aft 18Z over western and northern NM and where isolated thunder is possible as instability increases.
