Issued at 116 AM MDT Tue Mar 21 2023 Rain and heavy, wet high elevation snow will continue over northwest and north-central NM today. Rain and snow coverage is more limited to the far northern and southwest mountains tonight before a Pacific cold front brings more rain and snow to western and northern areas Wednesday and high winds to the eastern plains and the south- central mountains. Isolated showers linger north and west Wednesday night into Thursday. Rain and snow showers are forecast for the northwest half of the state Friday and for the northern quarter Friday through Sunday. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Wednesday) Issued at 116 AM MDT Tue Mar 21 2023 Flow aloft will back and strengthen through Wednesday, as a potent upper level low offshore of central CA moves inland then fills and opens up as it moves into the Great Basin and Desert SW. Today will be warmer than yesterday, but still well below normal across central/western NM where clouds and showers will persist. The latest HRRR, HREF and NAM all peg northwest NM with qpf today, including the northern mountains where a Winter Storm Warning is in effect. Otherwise, breezy to locally windy conditions are forecast by afternoon as a lee side trough deepens. Will issue a Wind Advisory for today for the south central mountains and southwest Chaves County. In terms of precipitation overnight, orographic forcing will be on the uptrend with winds aloft strengthening out of the southwest, which will favor the southwest mountains and the Tusas Mountains for continued precipitation. As the upper low opens up and moves further inland Wednesday as an open trough, the strongest winds aloft will pivot over the region and a lee side trough will deepen to near 995mb. Wednesday still looks to be the windiest day of the week and a High Wind Watch is in effect for much of south central and eastern NM. A Wind Advisory will likely be required for several zones surrounding the watch area. Patches of blowing dust are likely across eastern NM by Wednesday afternoon. Otherwise, precipitation will persist Wednesday with continued orographic forcing, favoring the western mountains. Snow will continue to pile up in the mountains and, especially over the peaks and along higher southwest/west facing slopes. A Winter Storm Warning will continue for the northern mountains and the Chuska Mountains through Wednesday. && .LONG TERM... (Wednesday night through Monday) Issued at 116 AM MDT Tue Mar 21 2023 Orographic snow continues in the northern and western mountains behind a Pacific cold front. Colder air also makes its way east through state along with brisk winds. Trough axis takes its sweet time propagating eastward through NM Thursday. Orographic snow develops Thursday and once again favors the western and northern mountains as very strong to high winds develop east. By Friday, the trough axis finally moves through with showers once again most prevalent west of the central mountain chain, but especially northern mountains and northwest highlands. The moist westerly flow aloft continues into the weekend with more showers for the northern quarter of the state Saturday night through Monday. GFS and ECWMF agree that a stretch of dry weather is in the offing for Tuesday and Wednesday. && .AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1134 AM MDT Tue Mar 21 2023 Areas along and west of the Central Mountain Chain will remain plagued in low clouds with areas of precipitation. As the afternoon progresses, precipitation, largely in the form of snow, will become more focused over the northwest and northern mountains, with lesser precipitation over the lower elevations. Precip will remain focused over the high terrain through Wednesday morning, then precipitation should fill in across lower elevations of northwest NM once again as a Pacific front moves in. MVFR to IFR cigs will remain common through the period with mt obscurations likely. Meanwhile, across eastern NM, mid and high clouds will prevail with gusty winds. Wind gusts between 30 and 40kt will be common this afternoon, but stronger winds with gusts upwards of 50-55kt are expected on Wednesday. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 116 AM MDT Tue Mar 21 2023 Winds are on the uptrend through Wednesday as an upper level trough/low moves inland from offshore of central CA. Wednesday will be the windiest day of the week and although humidity is forecast to remain above 20 percent, winds will easily exceed critical threshold across eastern NM where fine fuels may be receptive to the rapid spread of fire. Will issue a Fire Weather Watch for the eastern plains for Wednesday. Otherwise, good chances for wetting precipitation will persist across the mountains of western and northern NM through Wednesday. A trailing shortwave trough will move across late Thursday night into Friday, bringing another round of windy conditions with more chances for wetting precipitation once again favoring the mountains of northern/western NM.
