Issued at 243 AM MDT Mon May 8 2023 Warm and dry conditions expected to prevail Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures reaching their peak on Tuesday. Winds increase Tuesday into Wednesday ahead of a storm system. Showers and thunderstorms enter the forecast Wednesday, favoring northeastern New Mexico. A cool down is on tap Thursday with quieter weather expected until another system brings precipitation back into the mix over the weekend. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Tuesday) Issued at 243 AM MDT Mon May 8 2023 A weak backdoor front is making slow southwest progress from the northeast plains into the east central plains, but will get turned around by late this afternoon. The slight bump in moisture behind the front, combined instability generated from daytime heating, will result in increased cloud cover across far northeast NM this afternoon with the potential for a few virga showers. Otherwise, the warming trend continues as pressure heights creep upward and moderate southwest flow aloft persists. Above normal temperatures are forecast areawide through Tuesday, which will be the warmest day of the work week. Deep layer mixing of the atmosphere to between 450- 500mb will result in late day breezy to windy and gusty conditions. && .LONG TERM... (Tuesday night through Sunday) Issued at 243 AM MDT Mon May 8 2023 Flow aloft continues to strengthen Tuesday night as a pair of lows flirt with moving inland off the west coast. This will set the stage for a blustery scene on Wednesday as the H5 pressure gradient tightens and sfc pressure deepens. The southernmost low makes its debut into the Desert Southwest early Wednesday morning, making rapid pace towards the Land of Enchantment. Models have tracked this disturbance somewhat further south in recent runs, which could allow for some reprieve to wind speeds. This deviation will by no means equal a calm day across northern and central NM, however, where a windy to very windy setup is still expected alongside widespread single digit RH for most locales. The exception to this will be across far eastern NM where dryline processes maintain modest moisture. This might provide the juice necessary in the presence of admirable MLCAPE values in excess of 2000 J/kg for a strong storm or two in the eastern plains. Shear continues to be the limiting factor, running well under 30 kts most areas, inhibiting the organization of any storms that do attempt to develop. The negatively tilted system passes into NM Wednesday evening before slinging itself northward into CO on Thursday. Cooler temperatures will follow in its wake, with most locales seeing a few to several degrees of temperature reduction. Winds will slacken, but will remain breezy to locally windy most areas that afternoon. Another quiet day is expected on Friday as a baggy low passes across the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts. Temperatures rebound a few degrees amongst sunny skies nearly areawide, with light to breezy winds. Change is on the menu into the weekend, however, as a messy setup takes shape over the western CONUS. An upper high develops over the PacNW, while low pressure forms over the Baja, creating a wide Rex block. Winds remain reduced, while moisture increases dramatically from a tap out of the Gulf. This could lead to widespread showers and thunderstorms throughout the weekend and into early next week. && .AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1140 AM MDT Mon May 8 2023 Dry southwest flow aloft persists. Surface boundary with higher dewpoints in it's wake draped over ne and east central NM from KCAO-KTCC-KCVS at 17Z and where sct cumulus may develop, to retreat to the TX border by 23Z but will return by 07/06Z. Low level moisture may also migrate into southeast NM aft 07/06Z but not reach KROW. At this time, models don't indicate any conditions lower than VFR along the eastern NM border due to the increased low level moisture but this will need to be monitored. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 243 AM MDT Mon May 8 2023 ...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS... Warm, dry and unstable conditions will persist into mid week, with deep layer mixing of the atmosphere resulting in breezy to windy and gusty conditions by late day. Critical fire weather conditions are expected in the northeast highlands today and Tuesday, with more widespread critical conditions likely on Wednesday as a Pacific low lifts northeast toward the Four Corners from over AZ. Will add a watch for the northeast highlands for Tuesday and a watch for the entire area except the plains on Wednesday, where the dryline may trigger wetting storms. Winds will be strongest on Wednesday both ahead of and behind a Pacific front. Stronger winds will continue Thursday, mainly across eastern NM where one last round of critical fire weather conditions are likely. A pattern change will take place thereafter that will spell the end of warm, dry and windy conditions and replace them with cooler and moist conditions with much less wind going through the weekend. Good chances for wetting showers and storms will enter the forecast Saturday and ramp up Sunday with the help of a backdoor front.
