Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 303 PM MDT Sun Apr 2 2023 ...New SYNOPSIS, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, FIRE WEATHER... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 216 PM MDT Sun Apr 2 2023 Very windy, warm and dusty conditions are expected Monday in advance of a potent Pacific storm system, forecast to race southeast from the Great Basin into the southern Rockies. This Pacific system will bring a potent cold front that will race east across the state Tuesday morning, bringing strong to damaging winds and more blowing dust to much of the area. The strongest winds on Tuesday are forecast in the south central mountains eastward through Lincoln County and into Chaves County, where gusts to 80 mph or are forecast. Well below normal temperatures are forecast behind the cold front Tuesday into Thursday. Winds will trend down significantly Wednesday into Thursday and will be accompanied by a warming trend that will bring temperatures back to near or slightly above normal by the weekend. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Monday night) Issued at 216 PM MDT Sun Apr 2 2023 Confidence remains high that a prolonged and widespread strong to potentially damaging wind event will impact the region Monday and Tuesday. Forecast changes were minimal with this latest package and High Wind Watches will be upgraded to High Wind Warnings. The latest WV imagery shows a large swath of exceptionally dry air surging east into the desert southwest ahead of a potent upper level storm system approaching from the PacNW. Surface winds have increased today with many areas peaking in the 30 to 40 mph range. This is just a preview of widespread strong winds on the horizon Monday and Tuesday. 700 to 500mb layer winds will increase to between 40 and 50 kt overnight with ridge top gusts approaching 60 mph by sunrise Monday. Winds aloft increase further Monday with gusts of 55 to 65 mph spreading to western NM and more of the high terrain. Lower elevation areas of central and eastern NM will see strong winds but confidence is only high enough for Wind Advisory gusts of 45 to 55 mph Monday. Strong downslope flow of very dry air will lead to high temps above normal across the RGV and eastern NM. Roswell may reach 90F for the first time this season Monday. Winds aloft strengthen moreso into Monday night with High Winds persisting in the high terrain all night while tapering off slightly in the lower elevations. Temps Monday night will stay mild for early April with gusty winds thru the night. && .LONG TERM... (Tuesday through Saturday) Issued at 216 PM MDT Sun Apr 2 2023 Strong to damaging winds will spread from the mountains and adjacent highlands down into valleys and across the plains Tuesday morning as the upper level trough approaches the Four Corners and a Pacific cold front races east across the area. Went ahead and upgraded the High Wind Watch that begins 12Z Tuesday to a warning given model run-to-run consistency in showing anomalously strong winds aloft and the extreme values showing up the in the MOS over the past several runs. High forecast confidence event for Tuesday, with the strongest winds forecast in the south central mountains east through Lincoln County and Chaves County where gusts to around 80 mph are likely. Strong to damaging winds will impact travel across much of central and eastern NM Tuesday and in particular, the stretch of US285 from Clines Corners south to Roswell will likely experience dangerous crosswinds. Blowing dust will be an issue on Tuesday as well, especially across the southeast and east central plains where significant visibility restrictions are possible. Strong cold air advection Tuesday will make for high temperatures that will be 25-30 degrees below normal across central and western NM. Not to be completely outdone by the extreme winds and unusually cold temperatures, and round of snow will hit the west central and northern mountains Tuesday, focusing on the Tusas mountains near Chama where a few inches of accumulation are likely. Tuesday night into Wednesday morning will bring well below normal low temperatures with a widespread hard freeze forecast, except across the southeast plains where only a few hours of freezing temperatures are likely. Relating to these unusually cold low temperatures, 700mb temperatures are forecast to dip down to an anomalous -12C early Wednesday morning across much of central and northern NM. The closed low and wetter pattern being advertised by earlier runs of the GFS for late in the week and into the weekend is looking less likely given the 12Z medium range model solutions, which are all advertising a significant synoptic pattern change that will bring us much lighter flow aloft and an upper level ridge by the weekend. Meaning, the jet stream will be nowhere in sight and the pattern of high frequency wind events will be coming to an end for at least 7 days and perhaps longer. A warming trend will begin Wednesday and continue through the weekend, although temperatures will remain below normal through at least Thursday. Daytime temperatures will rise to near or above normal by Sunday in what should be a great weekend to enjoy springtime in NM. && .AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1150 AM MDT Sun Apr 2 2023 West and southwest winds will peak in the 25 to 35 kt range at most terminals btwn 21Z and 00Z. Winds will taper off aft sunset in many areas except the higher terrain where mt waves strengthen overnight. LLWS is likely at a few terminals overnight while winds aloft remain strong. Even stronger surface winds will occur over a widespread area Monday with BLDU and lcl vsby reductions likely. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 216 PM MDT Sun Apr 2 2023 ...PROLONGED AND WIDESPREAD CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED THROUGH TUESDAY... Satellite imagery shows a massive swath of dry air surging east from the Pacific into the desert southwest. Potent jet stream winds will increase over the region tonight and Monday then peak Tuesday with widespread strong to potentially damaging winds. Southwest winds on Monday will shift out of the west Monday night and Tuesday while a potent Pacific cold front slides thru the area. Critical to locally extreme fire weather is likely ahead of the front Monday and behind the front Tuesday, especially for eastern NM. Recoveries will be poor across all of eastern NM as well Monday night which allows critical fire weather to persist all night. Red Flag Warnings were also extended into Tuesday for much of the region. These dangerous fire weather conditions will support rapid fire growth with long range spotting possible in receptive grassland fuels. Winds are expected to trend much lighter by Wednesday in the wake of this system. However, breezy to locally windy conditions across the eastern plains may still favor some critical fire weather to linger into Wednesday. A much welcome pattern change still appears on the horizon beginning Thursday. Precipitation chances are not as high and confidence remains low on the coverage of showers toward the end of the week.
