.SYNOPSIS...Mild weather and cooler temperatures will continue
through the end of the work week before a weekend weather system
brings gusty winds, increased precipitation chances, and colder
temperatures to the region.
&&

.UPDATE...Tranquil weather will continue over our region overnight
while a band of high clouds moves overhead associated with a trough
brushing northern. The clouds show be mostly gone by sunrise Friday
with another cool and mostly sunny day in store for our forecast
area. Attention is primarily on expected Pacific System moving
inland Saturday and Sunday.

A change was made to the valid time of the Winter Storm Watch for
the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range. It is now in effect from 4 AM
PST Sunday morning until 10 PM PST Sunday evening. Moisture and
precipitation with the incoming system will be intercepted by the
High Sierra Saturday and will not spread over the southern Nevada
mountains until early Sunday morning. No other immediate changes are
needed to the forecast trends detailed in the previous discussion.

.SHORT TERM...through Friday.

Relatively quiet weather is expected for the next two days as we
remain under dry west-northwesterly flow aloft. A weak shortwave
will move through the area overnight into tomorrow morning, but it
is not expected to result in any major impacts. The most likely
impact associated with this disturbance will be a dusting of snow
in the higher elevations of the Sierra. Temperatures will remain a
couple of degrees below average through the end of week before we
cool off even more early next week.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday.

An upper-level cut-off low originating in the Gulf of Alaska and an
associated atmospheric river (AR) will impact the area over the
weekend. Currently, cluster analysis shows good agreement that a
trough will move through the region this weekend. However, for Days
3-5, EOF #1 shows that 40-50% of the variance is associated with
interensemble discrepancies regarding the position of the trough.
The variability in the position of the trough during this period is
due to differences between ensemble members regarding the speed of
the trough as it approaches and moves through the area. The latest
ECMWF and GFS ensemble mean solutions have been gradually trending
slower with this trough. This means that the window for potential
impacts will occur slightly later and may last slightly longer.

The higher elevations of Inyo County are expected to see the largest
impacts from this system as it moves through. Precipitation will
begin to impact the eastern slopes of the Sierra and the rest of
Inyo County on Saturday morning with the potential to persist into
Monday morning. Snow levels in the Sierra and White Mountains will
start off around 6,000 feet on Saturday morning before crashing to
3,000 feet by Sunday morning, and dropping under 2,000 feet early
Monday morning. In addition to the snow and rain, wind gusts in
excess of 40 mph will also be possible, especially at higher
elevations. These winds may result in blowing dust and/or snow, both
of which can reduce visibility and make for hazardous driving
conditions. Depending on the orientation of the 500 mb trough
relative to the Sierra, the potential for westerly downslope winds
exists in the Owens Valley. These winds may make for hazardous
travel conditions, especially along Highway 395.

The rest of our forecast area will see precipitation chances
increase from west to east beginning Saturday morning in Inyo County
and wrapping up early Monday morning in Mohave County. Exact QPF
amounts will depend on the evolution of the AR after it slams into
the Sierra on Saturday. The deterministic ECMWF and GFS have the
Sierra initially blocking a significant portion of the moisture
before the AR redevelops across the southern portion of our forecast
area. The deterministic GFS has consistently been more aggressive
than the ECMWF with this redevelopment. The GEFS shows a a 60-80%
chance of the AR redeveloping with IVT values greater than 250
kg/(ms) across northwestern Arizona and southern California on
Sunday. For southern Nevada the GEFS shows a 30-50% chance of IVT
values greater than 250 kg/(ms) on Sunday. If this band develops
further south we would see less precipitation across southern
Nevada. However if it develops further to the north it would result
in more precipitation across southern Nevada. The strength of the AR
will also influence precipitation amounts.

Outside of precipitation related impacts, we will also see gusty
south/southwesterly winds kick up across the forecast area
beginning Saturday afternoon. These gusty winds will continue into
Sunday evening. The strongest winds will be located in the western
Mojave Desert, eastern Sierra Slopes, eastern Inyo County/Death
Valley area, south central Nye County, southern Clark County, the
panhandle of Lincoln County, and Mohave County north of I-40.
There is a fairly decent chance of seeing gusts in excess of 40
mph in the aforementioned areas, with the issuance of a wind
product likely for some if not all of these forecast zones.

Beyond Monday, temperatures will be well below normal for the
entire forecast area. A trend that will stick around through the
end of the week.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Winds will be light through the TAF
period, favoring diurnal trends, with speeds generally below 8 kts.
These conditions will likely persist into Saturday morning. Clear
skies expected through the day today, but around 02Z, clouds will
increase to SCT-BKN aoa 20 kft, clearing around sunrise Friday
morning. Lower CIGS below 10 kft are possible on Sunday.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Winds will be light through the TAF period, favoring
diurnal trends, with speeds generally less than 8 kts. SCT-BKN aoa
20 kft around KBIH, increasing west-to-east through the remainder of
the late-afternoon and evening to impact the remaining TAF sites.
Skies will clear once again around sunrise Friday morning. Lower
CIGs and mountain obscurations are likely over the weekend.
