* IMPACTS...Damaging winds will be capable of blowing down trees 
  and power lines. Widespread power outages may result. Travel 
  will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...With recently warm temperatures, locations
  in the Sierra may be seeing increased recreational use. These
  winds may catch any hikers or climbers off guard and become very
  dangerous. These downslope winds may also descend all the way to
  Highway 395 corridor at times, causing blow overs for high 
  profile vehicles.

.SYNOPSIS...One more day of dry and mild conditions are expected
today with temperatures well above normal. A series of storm
systems will bring increased chances for winds, light rain and
minor snow to high elevations Friday and Saturday. Much cooler
temperatures will accompany the wetter weather over the weekend
with a gradual warmup and drier conditions expected for next week.

.UPDATE...Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas currently
sits at 65F as we gear up for the warmest day of the year so far.
Valleys can expect temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s, with
higher elevation areas in the upper 60s to lower 70s today. Late
this afternoon, gusty south winds will ramp up quickly, but will
diminish a bit after sunset. These winds may be enough to bump
temperatures to within a few degrees of daily records, particularly
along the Colorado River Valley. Needles, CA has a daily record of
91 (1910). No changes were made to the forecast this morning, as it
looks to be in good shape.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...404 AM PST Thu Mar 3 2022/

.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday.

One more day of well above average temperatures and dry conditions
before the first of several low pressure systems impacts the
region beginning Friday morning. This system, which was once
expected to track much farther north, is now progged to dive south
into southern California before pushing inland and across the
southwest CONUS Friday. This more southward track, coupled with
the right IWT conditions, would typically be a favorable precip
producer for the region. This particular system however
effectively chokes off a meager moisture plume before coming on
shore, thus QPF values are rather lackluster. It's actually the
second, much colder system Saturday that presents the better
possibility for precip, which is counterintuitive given it
originates from much farther north. It brings some moisture with
it from the Pacific NW, loses most of it over the Sierra, but
secondarily taps into the remnants of the first system's moisture
and wraps it back into Nevada. This meager moisture interacts with
a deeper low, better dynamics and even some decent instability
which could produce some convective precip Saturday across
Lincoln, northern Nye, and Mohave counties. Although the 48 hour
precip advertised by the deterministic NBM is a quarter inch or
less in these areas, it's where the best potential for
overachieving appears to be. This is well illustrated both in the
00Z ECMWF EFI and NBM QPF PDF.

What does that mean for precip impacts? Even with the 90th
percentile QPF, this would be borderline Winter Weather
Advisories for Lincoln, Nye, the AZ strip and the eastern Sierra
slopes, so believe most impacts would be minor and watches don't
appear to be warranted.

More likely than winter headlines will be wind headlines for
Friday and Saturday. With such a stark temperature drop expected,
that's usually a red flag for strong winds associated with a cold
front. In this case, that is somewhat tempered by the fact these
two systems are so close together. A rather broad surface low
sets up in response to Friday's system which will indeed make
things breezy for the region, but generally below 40 mph gusts
outside of perhaps the Barstow area. Things ramp up late Friday
and into Saturday in response to the second, deeper system
however. As surface pressure rises somewhat with the exiting
system, the surface gradient sees a net increase ahead of the cold
front and pushes things possibly into the 40-50 mph range for
locations along and south of the I-15 corridor. So, believe that a
wind advisory at this time seems like the most likely headline
for over the weekend.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through Wednesday.

The deep trough carved out over the Desert Southwest by the two
preceding low pressure systems will remain in place Sunday and
Monday as yet another cold upper low dives down from the north.
This final feature will have very limited moisture and should keep
any chances for showers confined to Lincoln and northern Mohave
counties on Sunday. It will primarily bring gusty north winds to
our region...especially Monday into Tuesday as it departs while
temperatures slowly climb a few degrees each day and eventually
recover to near normal by Wednesday under a dry northwest flow.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light winds through mid morning are
expected with BKN high clouds AOA 20k feet. After 18z, winds are
forecast to become more easterly around 6-7 kts into early afternoon
before shifting to the southeast around 22z. These southeast winds
are expected to be around 10-15 kts at times. Winds are then
forecast to become south to southwest after 23z with gusts up to 20
kts. Winds will diminish after sunset, but remain south to southwest
overnight around 10 kts. BKN high clouds expected to persist
overnight along with a FEW clouds around 15k feet.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwestern Arizona, and
southeastern California...Winds generally less than 10 kts through
mid day before increasing during the afternoon. South to southwest
winds are expected to be between 10-20 kts over most locations with
a few gusts approaching 25 kts in the lower Colorado River Valley.
BKN high clouds AOA 20k feet.
