and rough waves can overturn small craft.

What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Las Vegas, NV wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind advisory went out at Feb 20, 1:09 AM PST, 42 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 20, 1:09 AM PST, 42 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
109 AM PST Sun Feb 20 2022

.SYNOPSIS...One last day of quiet and warm weather can be expected
today before cooler and unsettled weather moves in for much of the
upcoming week as low pressure drops into the western states from
Canada. Strong winds will begin in the Sierra late tonight and
spread across parts of the Mojave Desert on Monday. Rain and low
elevation snow will be possible Tuesday and Wednesday as well.
&&

.SHORT TERM...through tonight. Early morning satellite loop showed
cirrus near and south of Las Vegas and clear skies farther north.
Surface obs showed light winds and seasonably chilly temperatures.
The feature of interest today will be low pressure which was taking
shape over British Columbia early this morning. Later today, strong
jet stream winds diving down the back side of this low will pull it
south into the Intermountain West, foreshadowing wind impacts
beginning as soon as early Monday morning (discussed further in the
Long Term section). Meanwhile, increasing southwesterly breezes this
afternoon will lead to temperatures near or slightly warmer than
Saturday.

.LONG TERM...Monday through Friday.

Unsettled weather through at least the first half of the work week
as a longwave trough settles over the western US. On Monday, a
shortwave is forecast to round the base of the trough and pass
through our area. With limited moisture and most of the forcing
staying to the north, we stay predominantly dry (some light precip
chances in far northeastern Lincoln and Mohave counties). The main
feature with the first system will be the winds. The eastern Sierra
slopes will be first to get strong westerly winds ahead of the wave
late tonight/early Monday morning, and gusty southwest winds will
spread across the Mojave Desert later in the day, with the strongest
gusts of 40 to 50 mph (isolated higher gusts possible) in San
Bernardino, southern Clark, and Mohave counties. Winds may weaken
slightly on Tuesday and Wednesday, but are forecast to remain
elevated. Hoisted Wind Advisories for the Sierra early Monday
morning through Monday evening, for much of the Mojave Desert south
and east of Las Vegas Monday and Monday evening, and persisting
through Tuesday evening in the Barstow area.

Tuesday evening and into Wednesday, the base of the longwave trough
is expected to pivot through the area. During this time, moisture
and synoptic forcing will be at their highest, producing better
precipitation chances across the area. Greatest precip probabilities
are over the northern and eastern regions of CWA. Cold air will be
in place as precip moves in, allowing for some low-elevation snow.
Minor accumulations are possible in Esmeralda, Nye, and western Inyo
counties. A couple inches of snow will be possible in Lincoln and
the eastern half of Mohave counties, as well as Mt. Charleston. If
precip occurs Wednesday morning, would not be surprised to see some
flurries in Las Vegas, especially on the west edge.

By Thursday, the system should be to our east, leaving cold air and
northerly winds in its wake. Calmer conditions should prevail
towards the end of the week, though model guidance hints at a weaker
system coming in over the weekend.
&&

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Southwest winds up to 8kts becoming
variable by 16z this morning and remaining light into the early
afternoon. Increasing southwest winds 12-15kts with gusts 18-23kts
are expected to develop this afternoon as early as 21z but more
likely around 23z. A few high clouds aoa 25kft will pass across the
area this morning. In the afternoon, there should be SCT high clouds
aoa 20kft initially becoming BKN-OVC aoa 15kft in the evening then
lowering overnight Sunday into Monday with CIGS 12-15kft. Stronger
winds are expected on Monday.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Typical diurnal winds this morning before southwest
winds increase this afternoon with gusts to around 25kts at KDAG and
20-25kts at KEED and KIFP. Expect stronger winds on Monday at all
TAF sites with gusts 30-35kts or better. SCT-BKN high clouds AOA
20kft at KDAG and KEED through this afternoon with CIGS lowering to
15kft tonight. KBIH will see BKN cloud cover initially above 20kft
this afternoon but lowering to around 15kft before clearing out
overnight.
&&

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
