Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 948 AM PDT Sat May 28 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Gusty winds will persist this weekend across the area leading to high fire danger through Sunday as a trough of low pressure digs over the western states. Temperatures will decrease each day and bottom out about 10 degrees below seasonal averages by Memorial Day. A warming trend will return by the middle of next week. && .UPDATE...Winds are over-achieving a bit this morning, with observed wind gusts over 40 mph in the higher elevations of western San Bernardino County and southern Inyo County south of Olancha. Hi-res models show a brief slow down over the next couple of hours, which has been noted via observations, so going to maintain the 11 AM PDT start time for the Wind Advisory for these areas. Looking at both visible and water vapor satellite, the moisture plume (as shown via IVT forecasts all week) is moving inland this afternoon. As such, an increase of cloud over, particularly over the higher elevations is expected this afternoon, which may work to temper afternoon highs today, which are forecast to be, once again, 3-5 degrees cooler than yesterday. This temperature trend will continue through through Monday. Wind Advisories and Red Flag Warnings look to be in good shape this morning, so no edits have been made to the forecast. && .PREVIOUS DISCUSSION... 310 AM PDT Sat May 28 2022/ .SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday. Gusty winds continue to be the main weather story across our region today and Sunday leading to high fire danger and various impacts on outdoor activities during this holiday weekend. The winds are due to a broad trough digging over the western states. An embedded shortwave and associated vorticity lobe could be seen on water vapor imagery off the Pacific Northwest Coast and this feature will help the overall trough dig as it swings across northern California and Nevada this afternoon and tonight then continues sliding over southern Nevada and northern Arizona on Sunday. Based on the latest hi res model ensembles, downslope winds gusting 40 to 50 mph now appear likely in the Owens Valley and adjacent eastern Sierra Slopes this afternoon and tonight... especially south of Olancha. A Wind Advisory is in effect from 2 PM this afternoon until 2 AM PDT Sunday morning to address the potential hazards to high profile vehicles on Highway 395. Hi res ensembles continue to indicate the primary belt of winds setting up in the base of the trough across the Western Mojave in San Bernardino County and extending across southern Clark and central/northern Mohave counties this afternoon and evening. The strongest winds should remain concentrated across northern San Bernardino County and the HREF shows a distinct drop in speeds east of the Colorado River Valley. No changes to other wind headlines which include advisories over much of San Bernardino and southern Clark counties and also Lake Mohave and Lake Mead from 11 AM this morning until 11 PM PDT this evening. Winds should briefly diminish over western San Bernardino county Sunday morning then increase again with gusts over 40 mph during Sunday afternoon and evening supporting the Wind Advisory continuing until 11 PM PDT Sunday evening. Temperatures will drop several degrees each day today and Sunday as the trough settles in. .LONG TERM...Memorial Day through Friday. Winds are expected to be lighter on Memorial Day but they will remain gusty in most areas. The high temperature forecast for Monday ticked up another degree to 84 in Las Vegas. This is up 3 degrees since a few days ago. It's getting close to meteorological summer so the temperature dips do not seem quite as severe and the NBM appears to be picking up on this and thus moderating the temperature. The Tuesday through Friday time period should be relatively quiet as temperatures steadily rise from around 8 degrees below normal on Tuesday to around 5 degrees above normal on Thursday before plateauing. Expect dry conditions to continue with occasional breezes as a persistent southwest flow sets up. && .FIRE WEATHER...Strong afternoon winds and low relative humidity will produce elevated or critical fire weather conditions across southeast California, southern Nevada and northwest Arizona today through Sunday. Red Flag Warnings remain in effect for most of southern Nevada and northwest Arizona from noon to 8 pm each day. The exception will be the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range today as humidities remain between 20 and 30 percent at elevations above 6000 feet. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Breezy southwest winds will continue through today with the strongest winds expected from late morning through early evening. There are some indications in the high res models that there could be a period of lighter, at times variable winds from around sunrise today through mid-morning, but the occurrence of this is not certain. Winds will decrease later this evening and overnight before a frontal system moving across the shifts winds to the northwest on Sunday. Right now it looks like that shift would occur between 13Z and 15Z. SCT to BKN clouds AOA 15kft will continue to move across the area into this afternoon but should decrease to FEW AOA 25kft by this evening. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Gusty conditions will continue for all sites today into tonight. For KBIH, winds will mainly be northerly throughout the TAF period, although a westerly component may be seen for a few hours after 21Z. Winds should return to the north by tonight. Winds at KDAG will be westerly through the period with gusts over 40kts likely this afternoon and evening. Winds will be mainly southwest to south at the lower Colorado River sites. Smoke from a nearby wildfire may reduce visibilities at times at KEED and blowing dust will be possible at KDAG.
