Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 238 PM PDT Thu Oct 20 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Quiet weather will continue through the work week before a cold system drops into the Desert Southwest this weekend. Gusty southwest winds expected through the day on Saturday with light precipitation possible in our northern zones. Cooler temperatures expected on Sunday, with several locations possibly experiencing their first freeze of the season. Temperatures will warm slightly as next week progresses. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday. Temperatures will remain above-average as the work week comes to a close, though expect afternoon highs to drop a couple of degrees between today and Friday as an incoming weather system works to break down the ridge overhead. As this incoming trough approaches the Desert Southwest, pressure and thermal gradients will increase, resulting in increased southwest winds all day on Saturday. Unlike most wind events, these wind gusts will not diminish after sunset. The trough axis is expected to push through southern Nevada between 12am and 4am Saturday night/Sunday morning, which will keep gusts elevated through the evening. The NBM continues to trend upward regarding wind speeds, which is likely to persist as we enter the high- resolution domain. That said, speeds remain solidly within Wind Advisory criteria, with High Wind Warnings looking unlikely. In general, sustained wind speeds expected to range from 25 to 35 mph with gusts from 35 to 45 mph. Localized areas will experience stronger wind gusts, particularly in areas with topographic or infrastructure-related enhancement or in areas of higher elevation. Wind Advisories are in effect for Inyo County, northern San Bernardino County, southern Nye County, Clark County, and Mohave County starting at 11am Saturday morning and persisting through 5am Sunday morning. Of note, downslope winds are likely to reach the Owens Valley floor, impacting Highway 395 as they barrel down the eastern Sierra Slopes. Will have a better idea of strength in the next 24-hours. Strongest wind gusts in Lincoln County continue to push eastward with each model run, and currently remain restricted to the far eastern fringes of the county. Will continue to assess leading up to the event if NV015 needs to be added to the Wind Advisory, but the product looks to be in good shape at the moment. With the approach of the associated cold front, light precipitation is possible, particularly favoring the southern Great Basin and northeastern Clark County. Rain that falls is not expected to have impacts other than slick roadways, with totals less than a quarter of an inch. As the trough axis passes through the region, gusty northwest winds will take over, lessening in magnitude through the morning. Wind gusts on Sunday will range from 15 to 25 mph, with strongest gusts across Esmeralda and central Nye counties. This system will briefly drop snow levels below 5000 feet Sunday morning, with measurable snowfall possible in the higher elevations of the Lincoln County panhandle. A northeastward trend in NBM snow totals has been noted through the week, with only negligible amounts of snowfall expected in the Sierra and Spring Mountains as of the latest forecast package. With these cooler temperatures will come the potential for a few areas to experience their first freeze of the season - the northern Owens Valley in Inyo County, Esmeralda, central Nye, northern Lincoln, and northern Mohave counties - for where we have a Freeze Watch in effect Sunday morning. This watch will either be upgraded to a warning or canceled for each zone as our confidence increases. Additional zones favoring the southeastern southern Great Basin have another shot of freezing Monday morning as well. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Thursday. Minor ridging will set up in the wake of the aforementioned trough, allowing temperatures to rebound slightly, while still remaining below seasonal averages. This dry northwesterly flow aloft is likely to facilitate shortwave propagation which is likely to result in afternoon breeziness. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light winds favoring typical diurnal trends today and tonight. Scattered high clouds move through during the day, becoming less prevalent this evening. Light east winds tomorrow morning before switching to a breezy south-southwest wind in the afternoon. Gusts around 15 knots possible. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Light and diurnal winds today with waves of SCT-BKN high clouds moving through. Clouds to become less prevalent tonight. Slight increase in south-southwest winds tomorrow afternoon with speeds around 8-12 knots.
