Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1032 AM PDT Sat May 7 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will drop a few degrees each day over the weekend with below average temperatures on tap for early next week as a broad trough moves into the region. In addition to cooling temperatures, west/southwesterly wind gusts will pick up this afternoon with stronger gusts expected on Sunday as this trough continues to dig south. && .UPDATE...Breezy west to southwest winds were reported across the region through the morning. The strongest winds so far we through the western Mojave Desert where gusts 35 to 45 MPH were noted in the past hour. Otherwise, widespread gusts 20 to 30 MPH through the Owens Valley of California, southern Nevada, and western Arizona. Forecast for the afternoon looks on track with continued gusty winds expected. No changes to the wind headlines as the current wind advisory looks to capture the ares whee wind impacts are possible and gusts 40 MPH or more are possible through the afternoon. The one area to watch for higher than anticipated impacts for today will be the Owens Valley as strong and/or more widespread impactful crosswinds are possible if downsloping makes it to valley floors, but so far the best performing short term guidance and model cross sections would keep the stronger winds in the mid to upper slopes of the Sierra. Others, expect a mix of sun and high clouds this afternoon as mid level moisture streams overhead. High temperatures will remain well above normal again today, however they will likely run a few degrees cooler than yesterday. --Nickerson-- && .PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...310 AM PDT Sat May 7 2022 .SHORT TERM...through Sunday. A broad upper-level trough will gradually move into the region over the course of the weekend, resulting in a smattering of wind and fire weather headlines across the region today and tomorrow. As this trough digs south on Saturday, we will see west/southwesterly wind gusts pick up across the area in response. The strongest of these wind gusts are expected to occur in a belt extending from the northern portions of San Bernardino County through the southern portion of Clark County to the north/north central portions of Mohave County. 40-50 mph afternoon gusts are expected to occur within this belt of winds. Additionally, 40+ mph westerly downslope winds will be possible this afternoon in the eastern slopes of the Sierra and the Owens Valley. Hi-res cross sections of the eastern Sierra and Owens Valley show the strongest downslope winds penetrating into the mid-slope region this afternoon. While the strongest winds are not expected to make it across the valley floor, sudden gusty cross winds will still be possible along Highway 395. The bulk of this trough will push into the northern Great Basin region on Sunday, resulting in a further increase in wind speeds. The strongest winds on Sunday are expected to occur in the same belt as Saturday, with hi-res cross sections showing an even stronger downslope signal in the eastern slopes of the Sierra and Owens Valley. 45-55 mph gusts are expected in the aforementioned areas on Sunday with the potential for gusts in excess of 58 mph. Currently there is a High Wind Watch in effect on Sunday for these areas with increasing confidence in winds reaching High Wind Warning Criteria in the northern portions of San Bernardino county, as well as the eastern slopes of the Sierra and the Owens Valley. Outside of these areas covered by a High Wind Watch, a Wind Advisory has been issued for all remaining zones as widespread gusts around 40 mph are expected on Sunday afternoon. While the winds on Sunday will be stronger and more widespread than the winds on Saturday, it does not mean that we do not expect to see wind-related impacts on both Saturday and Sunday. The most likely impacts associated with this weekends winds include, but are not limited to: sudden gusty crosswinds, blowing dust resulting in reduced visibility, increased wave heights on lakes and rivers resulting in dangerous boating conditions, high fire danger, and unsecured items being blown away. .LONG TERM...Monday through Friday. Not much has changed since last night. A anomalously deep longwave trough still progged to lie across the western states most of next week. Some run-to-run timing differences continue with WPC Cluster Analysis still suggesting a slower evolution with trough sharpening to our west over California Tuesday. Will slower development, trough axis may still lie to our west Wednesday. There remains more uncertainty late next week in just how soon the trough weakens and lifts eastward. With the slower evolution, windy conditions extend from Mother's Day into Monday. However, don't believe winds would be at the magnitude of Mother's Day. Otherwise, breezy periods likely persist Tuesday- Thursday. Well below normal temperatures Monday-Wednesday with values finally starting to moderate Thursday and Friday. As for precipitation. NBM guidance still not overly excited with only a slight chance shown for parts of Inyo and Esmeralda Counties primarily Tuesday and Wednesday. && .FIRE WEATHER...Fire weather conditions will be critical today and tomorrow due to strong winds and low humidity across the region. Temperatures today will be 5-10 degrees above average for much of the region. This combined with single digit relative humidities and 40-50 mph wind gusts across San Bernardino, Clark, Mohave, and southwestern Lincoln counties has prompted the issuance of a Red Flag Warning for the affected zones on Saturday. Temperatures tomorrow will be cooler than today, but winds will be stronger than on Saturday with 45-55+ mph gusts possible. As such, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for all fire zones on Sunday. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Southerly winds of 8-12 knots with sporadic gusts to near 20 knots will remain possible through the early morning hours before ramping up in the late morning hours Saturday. After 18z or so, southwesterly winds with gusts exceeding 35 knots will be possible, peaking in strength in 23z-04z period before easing up overnight. Pockets of enhanced low level turbulence and localized visibility reductions to 5 miles with blowing dust will be possible. Slightly stronger southwest winds will resume during the daylight hours Sunday. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Winds will be on the increase today across much of the region, with southwesterly surface winds peaking in strength during the afternoon and evening hours. Widespread gusts of 25 to 35 knots can be expected across the Mojave Desert and Southern Great Basin, with wind favored areas such as a KDAG gusting over 40 knots. Areas of blowing dust and localized visibility reductions are possible. Pockets of moderate turbulence are also likely downwind of the Sierra and near KBIH.
