.SYNOPSIS...A potent system diving in from the Pacific Northwest
will bring widespread high winds and extensive blowing dust today.
Winds weaken tomorrow, but usher in much cooler temperatures.
Temperatures warm to near normal by the end of the week, before
another system looks to bring breezy conditions.

.UPDATE...Start time for the high wind warning for the eastern Sierra and
Owens Valley has been bumped up to the current time. This warning
will remain in effect until 3 AM PDT. The wind advisory in southern
San Bernardino County has been expanded to include southeastern San
Bernardino County and southwestern Mohave County, including Needles
and Lake Havasu City.

.SHORT TERM...Today.

Water vapor satellite imagery shows a potent shortwave/compact
closed low over the PacNW this morning. This system will continue to
dive southeast throughout the day, inducing pressure falls over the
Intermountain West. This will create a stout W-E pressure gradient,
promoting strong west-southwest winds across the entire CWA. During
this time, a 500mb jet max will be pivoting around the base of the
trough, impinging on our area and setting the stage for strong
downslope winds. Widespread wind gusts of 50-70 mph are expected,
with locally stronger gusts possible with any significant
downsloping in the Owens Valley and the west side of the Las Vegas
Valley. Extensive blowing dust is expected, making for hazardous
travel in some locations. High profile vehicles can also expect
hazardous travel, especially on N-S roads where crosswinds are
maximized. In the Las Vegas Valley, some hi-res guidance is
suggesting the development of a rotor feature this evening, which
would induce weaker, easterly winds on the east side of the valley.
However, it remains unclear whether this feature will actually
materialize, and if so, where it will set up. Regardless, everyone
should prepare for very windy conditions this afternoon and evening.
A cold front is expected to push through overnight, shifting winds
to the northwest and bringing an end to the strongest winds.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through Sunday.

As this system exits the region tomorrow, breezy northwest winds and
much cooler temps will be left behind. Tomorrow's highs are forecast
to be 50's and 60's for the majority of the CWA, 15-20 degrees below
normal. Lows on Wednesday morning will range from the 20's in our
northern locations to the upper 40's in the Colorado River Valley.
Fortunately, temps will warm up throughout the week as zonal flow
sets in. By Friday and Saturday, temps should be near their seasonal
values. Ensemble guidance suggests that a late-week system may
impact our area. There remains a fair amount of uncertainty with
this system, but the main impacts, if any, look to be wind-related.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Moderate to major impacts still
expected today as high wind gusts begin to impact the terminal this
afternoon. Winds have turned south-southeasterly this morning but
will shift to the southwest by the 18-19Z time frame. Once this
occurs, gusts will be strong, potentially eclipsing 50 kts at times
and if so, warranting an airport weather warning. Highest winds
expected in the 20-04Z time frame. Later tonight, a cold front will
push through the valley shifting winds to the northwest around 07Z.
Winds gusts will be lesser with the front, but still gusty,
potentially as high as 40 kts as the front goes through. A gradual
decrease in gusts is expected through the rest of the morning hours,
but maintaining an overall northwest orientation.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...KVGT and KHND will follow similar trends to KLAS with
winds favoring a more southwesterly direction and sustained wind
speeds and gusts increasing in speed throughout the afternoon. These
winds will continue to increase throughout the afternoon with gusts
at KHND and KVGT peaking around 45-50 knots between 20Z - 04Z. After
04Z, a cold front will move through and shift winds to the northwest
staying gusty. Blowing dust and visibility reductions are expected
to accompany this increase in wind speeds, especially for the KDAG
terminal. Downslope west winds have begun at KBIH and will continue
through the afternoon hours before shifting to the north around 01Z.
These gusts could also be accompanied by blowing dust and potential
reductions in visibility. Both KIFP/KEED locations could see 30-40
knot gusts this afternoon as well.
