Breezy winds will also continue across portions of northeastern WY, leading to critical fire weather conditions for the remainder of the afternoon into the evening. Late this evening into tonight, winds will decrease over the northeastern WY plains but increase over the northern and eastern foothills eastward onto the SD plains. These winds will limit overnight relative humidity recovery and likely lead to the development of critical fire weather conditions across the northern and eastern foothills late this evening through much of tomorrow. A trough crossing the area tomorrow will bring an abrupt shift to breezy northwesterly winds while relative humidity values remain low, leading to more widespread critical fire weather conditions across much of western and central SD into southern portions of northeastern WY from late tomorrow morning through the afternoon. Water vapor shows massing upper ridge over the western/central
CONUS, with large trof pushing onshore BC. At the surface, lee
Northern Rockies trof is slowly deepening. Hazy skies and relatively
mild temps early this morning across the area, with some breezy
southerly winds over southwest SD due to a low level jet.
Another hot day in store today with thermal ridge peaking across
our forecast area. Similar to the last couple days, high temps may
not reach their full potential given amount of smoke aloft.
Nonetheless, high temps will soar well into the 90s and lower
100s. For tonight, some gusty downslope winds in the northern
Black Hills/foothills may develop, as well as gusty
south/southwest winds across southwest/south central SD as upper
trof begins working into the Northern Rockies and surface trof
advances into the western Dakotas. This will also result in very
mild overnight lows.
Strong cold front will push into northeast WY and far western SD
Thursday morning, and central SD Thursday afternoon. Gusty northwest
winds expected behind the front, with a large temp spread from west
to east. Precip chances will increase late Thursday, and especially
Thursday night into Friday.
Cool, breezy, and unsettled conditions will continue through
Saturday as upper trof works across the Northern Plains. Drier and
warmer conditions will then quickly return for Sunday and early next
week, with highs on Sunday well into the 70s, and 80s for Monday and
Tuesday.

south to southwest winds will develop from northeast WY to
southern SD this afternoon and especially tonight. Smoke from
western US wildfires will reduce vsby in many areas, but should
mainly stay VFR.
A cold front will push through Thursday, with winds shifting out
of the northwest across the area after 10-12z Thursday morning.

Hot and very dry conditions are expected today with RH in the 10 to
20 percent range. Critical fire weather conditions are expected to
develop across portions of northeast WY as gusty southwest winds
develop. Poor RH recovery is expected across much of the region
tonight as breezy and dry south/southwest winds develop ahead of
a strong cold front. On Thursday, low RH and gusty winds ahead of
and behind the strong cold front may lead to widespread critical
fire weather conditions, especially east and south of the Black
Hills. Good chances for wetting rains arrive Thursday night and
Friday behind the cold front, with cool and unsettled conditions
continuing through Saturday. Warmer and drier weather return late
in the weekend and early next week.
