Total sleet accumulations of one inch are likely with a locally heavier band of two inches along and north of I-40, extending to I-44. Across far southeast Oklahoma and west-central Arkansas, sleet mixed with freezing rain is likely with ice accumulations of one tenth to one half of an inch through Thursday. Another round of freezing rain and sleet will spread back into the region Thursday morning. Challenging forecast for the next couple of days as multiple rounds of
winter weather will likely impact the region. Models remain in fairly
good agreement with spreading scattered areas of light to moderate
sleet, with occasional freezing rain, into eastern Oklahoma during
the morning hours, moving into northwest Arkansas by late morning.
Elevated instability will be sufficient for a few embedded thunderstorms
with brief bursts of sleet likely. Further south, the wintry precipitation
will likely trend more toward freezing rain with ice accumulations likely
across southeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas. Went ahead an upgraded
much of the winter storm watch to a winter storm warning given the
combination of ice/sleet expected. North of I-44 overall precipitation
amounts should remain lighter and therefore stayed with a winter weather
advisory across aforementioned area.
The initial round of winter weather should begin to taper off Wednesday
evening, especially across northeast Oklahoma. However this will be
short lived as secondary area of sleet, mixed with freezing rain,
will spread back into the area in association with main upper level
vort max Thursday morning. There still remains some uncertainty
regarding surface temperatures, especially in the Arkansas River
Valley into the day Thursday. Temperatures may rise to near or just
above freezing during the afternoon which could lessen overall total
ice amounts in the Fort Smith area. Still expected the higher
terrain areas to have accumulating ice and sleet. The winter weather
threat will likely end Thursday evening with precipitation shifting
east with main upper trough axis.
Another upper level wave will dive out of the central Rockies over
the weekend with at least low precipitation chances, mainly south
of I-40. Otherwise, warmer conditions forecast into the early part
of next week.

IFR to MVFR ceilings continue to hold on for all of our terminals
at this time. Locations across NE OK and far NW AR are seeing
reduced visibilities as well. This is likely due to light snow
flurries falling. Clouds are starting to erode from west to east
with breaks in the clouds starting to develop as well. In the mean
time, until skies can clear out, expect light snow flurries or
light freezing drizzle to continue for our NE OK and far NW AR TAF
sites. MVFR ceilings may stick around through much of the TAF
period across NW AR.
After several hours of quiet weather this afternoon, evening and
overnight, our next winter storm system begins moving into the
area during the morning hours tomorrow. Snow and sleet are likely
for TAF sites north of I-40 while sleet and freezing rain are
more likely for sites along and south of I-40. Ceilings will also
be lowering through the morning with some locations likely
becoming MVFR by the end of the TAF period. Conditions look to
deteriorate even more right after this valid TAF period.
