A surface low just east of Childress, Texas this afternoon
will move east southeast across northern Texas this evening into
far southern Arkansas by early Saturday. This will result in a
strong cold front moving southeast across our area overnight. At
the same time, an upper low over South Dakota will drop south into
central Oklahoma by early Saturday morning.
Areas of light rain are expected to develop later this evening and
expand overnight across our area, especially across northeast
Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas. The rain will begin to mix with
or change to snow in some places late tonight as temperatures fall
at the surface and aloft with the approach of the upper low.

The aforementioned upper low will move southeast into far
northwest Louisiana during the day Saturday. Light rain and/or
snow will be ongoing early in the morning, but a mid level dry
slot will move into much of the area from the west early in the
day. This may bring a break in the precipitation for a few hours,
except perhaps in northwest Arkansas, but some drizzle or freezing
drizzle will be possible within the mid level dry slot.
By Saturday afternoon, wraparound moisture will overspread the
area, resulting in an uptick in precipitation intensity again. By
this time, most of the area will see snow, but some rain may still
be mixed in in the Arkansas river valley around Fort Smith. The
heaviest snow is expected to be in the higher terrain of the
Boston and Ouachita mountains, where local snow amounts may
approach or exceed 4 inches. Any 4 inch plus amounts will be
isolated and limited to high elevations, with amounts in the
surrounding lower elevations likely to be significantly less. Thus
will just go with a winter weather advisory at this time. Have
expanded the previous advisory into the Ouachitas of southeast
Oklahoma.
The snow will end Saturday evening, with dry weather then expected
for the rest of the forecast period. A quick warmup will take
place early next week, with another strong cold front bringing
much colder temperatures for the middle to latter part of next
week.

A narrow band of light rain will begin to develop, spreading into
northeast Oklahoma this evening near vicinity of cold front as
stronger forcing develops. Behind front, strong and gusty north
winds will increase across eastern Oklahoma with precip moving
into northwest Arkansas after midnight with MVFR ceilings developing
at most locations. There will likely be a lull in precip late tonight,
especially at NE OK TAF sites as dry slot moves over. There could
be a brief period of very light freezing drizzle during this time
across aforementioned area, however given the uncertainty left
out for now. Areas of snow will likely increase in coverage and
intensity through the day Saturday with IFR conditions likely in
the heavier snow bands, especially across NW AR. Stayed with a
mix of rain/snow at FSM into Saturday afternoon.
