Issued at 309 PM CST Tue Mar 8 2022 Key Messages: - Accumulating snow appears likely Wednesday evening through Friday morning. - Highest totals from the event currently reside along and north of Interstate 70. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for this area - Arctic air accompanies the snow with below normal temperatures expected Thursday through Saturday. Quiet weather remains in place today with the forecast area on the western periphery of an eastward advancing surface ridge. A mid- level shortwave has progressed into the Plains this afternoon and will continue to push east this evening, shunting a cold front southeastward through the forecast area. The main impact from the passing of these features will be the increased CAA that sets the stage for the winter storm that will impact the region beginning Wednesday afternoon. Dry and quiet conditions are expected for the first half of Wednesday before a longwave trough digs south across the central CONUS. In response, a surface low deepens over southeastern Colorado and is pushed to the southeast by the diving trough into the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma. The pressure gradient tightens across the forecast area with strengthening northeast winds allowing colder air to spill in. A band of precipitation is likely to be ongoing across Nebraska during the day Wednesday where isentropic ascent is maximized to the north of the 850mb front. This band will be pushed into north central Kansas during the mid to late afternoon as the 850mb front sags south and east. Synoptic scale lift begins to ramp up after 00z as the trough progresses through and a pair of upper-level jet streaks become coupled with northeast Kansas progged to be in the area of enhanced upper-level divergence. At the same time, the LLJ strengthens with increasing isentropic ascent along and north of the 850mb front. To go along with all of the synoptic scale lift, an area of further enhancement appears likely as 850- 700mb frontogenesis maximizes in the 00z-12z timeframe. All of this supports a band of heavier snow although the exact location is still uncertain. The best chances for 6+ inches of snow lies along and north of Highway 36 where model soundings show a deep dendritic growth zone collocated with substantial synoptic and mesoscale forcing for several hours. SLR may exceed 15:1 with snowfall rates approaching 1" per hour in this area. This heavier band may weaken Thursday morning as the LLJ weakens, but an area of frontogenetic forcing may continue to enhance overall lift across the area as the 850mb front translates to the south and east. As a result, light to moderate snow is progged to continue through the day Thursday. A piece of the main trough becomes a closed low near the desert southwest and ejects across the southern Plains Thursday evening into Friday. Precipitation with this second wave is mainly expected to stay southeast of the forecast area, but may clip areas along and southeast of Interstate 35. Any lingering snow ends by midday Friday. Overall amounts will vary across the area. As previously mentioned, areas along and north of Highway 36 have the best chance at 6+ inches of snow. Further south along the Interstate 70 corridor, 2-6 inches is possible with amounts generally 3 inches or less expected even further south. With confidence increasing in significant snow accumulations, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for areas along and north of Interstate 70. Along with the snow, arctic air makes its return to the area with highs on Thursday and Friday in the 30s. The coldest timeframe looks to be Saturday morning where temperatures will fall into the single digits with some below zero readings.
