Key Messages

- Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for a high impact storm
  system impacting the area Wednesday night into Thursday.
  Accumulating snow, strong northwest winds gusting to 50 mph,
  frigid temps, and reduced visibility from blowing snow are all
  anticipated hazards.

- Minimum wind chill readings from 25 to 40 degrees below zero are
  expected across all of northeast Kansas early Thursday through
  Friday. Wind chills range from 20 to 30 degrees below zero Saturday
  morning as well. Wind Chill Watch remains in effect.

Very weak low level frontogenesis behind the marching cold front
this morning has developed patchy light freezing drizzle in central
and eastern portions of the CWA.  While travel impacts are not
expected, the combination of temps quickly falling to the low 20s
and light moisture may contribute to a few slick spots on
roadways. Any precip diminishes before 12Z.

The stratus attempts to scour out behind the cold front this
afternoon while a chilly 1040 mb sfc high slides across the central
plains.  Despite the peak of sun, temps are likely to not make it
out of the 20s today. In anticipation of the developing lee
trough on Wednesday, sfc winds veer to the southeast and increase
from 10 to 15 mph sustained in the afternoon. This should allow us
a brief reprieve with readings in the middle to upper 30s
Wednesday afternoon and early evening before the arctic front
arrives. Timing of the front and shift to strong winds is coming
together between guidance, entering north central Kansas after 6
PM Wednesday, bisecting the CWA around midnight and completely
through the area before 6 AM Thursday. Winds behind the front
increase between 20 and 30 mph with gusts in excess of 50 mph
possible Thursday morning into Friday. No big changes were made to
the winds or wind chills as readings fall from 15 to 30 degrees
below zero Thursday morning before bottoming out between 25 and 40
degrees below zero Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon.
While there is a slight improvement, the impacts remain the same
Saturday morning as wind chills fall between 18 to 30 degrees
below zero. Even though the Wind Chill Watch carries through
Friday afternoon, it is possible an additional headline will be
needed for Saturday AM.

The snow variable is the elusive aspect of this storm system. The
overall depth of the upper low has weakened some with a slight shift
north in the track from 18Z solutions. Latest ECMWF and ensemble
solutions have remain largely unchanged in terms of QPF while the
GFS ensemble has cut total qpf amounts in half by Thursday
afternoon. The NAM and SREF solutions are more in line with the
ECMWF with around 0.30 inches of liquid with this system therefore
opted to drop storm total qpf. Another factor in question are the
snow ratios and how dry the airmass is behind the front.
Operational guidance varies between 15 to 25 to 1 so adjusted
forecast ratios some to be in the middle closer to 20:1.
Combination of the lowered QPF and slightly lower snow ratios
resulted in snow amounts from 2 to 5 inches for the storm total.
This may easily change in latter forecasts, however it is
important to note that regardless of the snowfall, the strong
sustained winds and falling snow will likely cause blowing snow
and blizzard conditions Thursday and Thursday night. Very
hazardous travel is anticipated area wide. Patchy blowing snow
continues into Friday as winds sustain from 15 to 20 mph. For
headlines, the Winter Storm Watch and Wind Chill Watch will likely
need to be upgraded if forecast trends continue.

As this upper low rapidly deepens across the Great Lakes and
Northeast later this week, the stout winds gradually subside for
the holiday weekend. The frigid 1040 mb ridge axis makes a beeline
towards northeast Kansas as temps barely approach the low teens
Saturday before dropping back down to 10 degrees below zero for
actual temps Christmas morning. There is a weak signal for an
embedded upper trough to quickly pass through Christmas evening.
For now kept the forecast dry, but if trends continue may decide
to add precip chances in. Warmer, above freezing temps are in
sight for Monday and Tuesday as southerly flow returns to the
region.

remaining in how this stratus progresses this afternoon and into
Wednesday. Still think KMHK has a better chance of clearing out
later this afternoon before MVFR cigs push back in Wednesday morning.
Stratus looks to impact KTOP/KFOE through the majority of the period.
Winds become south-southeasterly Wednesday morning.
