...AVIATION SECTION UPDATED...

.SYNOPSIS...
Arctic air will remain entrenched over the Northern rockies for much
of the week, with Wednesday and Thursday likely being the coldest
days. Additionally, periods of mainly light snow are expected
through Wednesday with more widespread snow accumulation likely
Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The Arctic air begins to
retreat on Friday, with temperatures trending closer to average for
most locations by Christmas Day.

.DISCUSSION...

Satellite imagery/analysis this morning shows a deep large scale
upper trough extending SW from the Canadian Arctic through western
Canada with an upper low in the base of the trough over the Canadian
Rockies and an embedded shortwave upstream moving south from AK. At
the surface, an expansive Arctic airmass continues to build across
NW Canada, extending south into MT. The southern edge of this
airmass had pushed up the Jefferson Valley to near Dillon and into
the Gallatin Valley overnight before stalling.

Multiple winter weather hazards will affect the area through much of
this week related to increasingly cold temperatures and associated
wind chill values as the Arctic airmass continues to slide south and
deepen across the area as well as with snow, mainly light today with
a more widespread/impactful period of snow expected across the area
late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Finally, near record cold maximum
and minimum temperatures are appearing increasingly likely for the
Wednesday through Thursday morning period the Arctic airmass reaches
it's deepest point across the area. See the sections below for

Snow... Light snow continues this morning across portions of north-
central MT as moisture in westerly flow beneath the low in BC/AB
streams over the cold airmass in place. Some additional accumulation
up to 2 inches is possible this morning along the continental divide
near the Rocky mountain Front. Otherwise, mainly light accumulation
less than one inch is expected for areas further east. The shortwave
disturbance currently moving south near the AK panhandle will swing
across the Pacific NW and Northern Rockies Tuesday night into
Wednesday accompanied by a significant upper level jet and surge of
Pacific moisture. Model ensembles and probabilistic guidance is
focusing the greatest likelihood for QPF amounts in excess of 0.25"
along an E-W axis between Great Falls and Helena, which has trended
a bit further north. This is largely in the cold airmass north of
the Arctic front, but does shift south across SW MT Wednesday.
Temperatures will likely not be ideal for high snow ratios but
several inches of snow accumulation are likely across much of
central and SW MT and a winter storm watch continues to highlight
this, but accumulations in excess of 5 inches appear limited outside
of the central MT mountains.

Increasing Cold... Expect temperatures to continue a downward trend
across most of the area, though areas south of I90 could see some
large fluctuations as the Arctic boundary oscillates before pushing
across the rest of SW MT Tuesday night. The stronger push of cold
air into the area Wednesday will begin to threaten some records for
both cold maximum temperatures (generally in the teens below zero)
and for minimum temperatures Wednesday night (ranging from around 30
below to the mid 40s below zero). The cold airmass peaks Thursday
morning with high confidence in strong surface high pressure (near
1060mb), 850MB temps <-30F and sub 4900m H5-10 thickness values all
supporting very cold to near record temps, but as usual the presence
and amount of clouds will have a large impact on whether record
values are reached.

Wind Chill... Wind chill values in the cold airmass already range
from -20 to -30 with wind chills of -40 and lower becoming more
likely tonight through Wednesday as wind chill warnings go into
effect and eventually expand into SW MT. Wind chills of -50 or lower
are possible as the coldest air moves into the area Wednesday night
with additional surface pressure rises.

Outlook...
After the cold period peaks early Thursday, a moderating trend is
still expected moving into the holiday weekend. The transition to
milder temperatures will be slower for northeast portions of
north-central MT however daytime temperatures in the 30s to
around 40 (above zero) are likely for most valley and plains
locations by Christmas day. There still is a lot of uncertainty
with embedded disturbances move over the building ridge and
precipitation potential going into the weekend, but some
potential hazards to keep in mind will be the potential for
increased wind and blowing/drifting of snow in the transition to

An Arctic boundary will remain nearly stationary roughly along the
I90 corridor for the next 24 hrs. A slightly warmer westerly flow
aloft will maintain periods of MVFR clouds/vis and light snow today
and tonight. On Tuesday, moisture streaming ahead of an approaching
trough will gradually lower ceilings and introduce increased snow
occurrence and intensity, mostly along the Divide and over the
plains. Mountains/passes will be obscured, especially toward the end
