.SYNOPSIS...

Winds will increase across the Northern Rockies through Christmas
Day, with the strongest winds expected along the Rocky Mountain
Front and adjacent plains. These strong winds combined with
widespread snow on the ground will set the stage for Blizzard
conditions, mainly west of the I-15 corridor in Central and North
Central Montana. Additionally, primarily light accumulating snow
is expected in the mountains through Christmas Day across the
Northern Rockies.

Only minor updates to the current forecast this morning. Adjusted
maximum temperatures for today to reflect current observations.
Temperatures will slowly rise today in the Helena Valley from the
single digits to the low 20s. Areas east of I-15 and north of Fort
Benton will rise above zero by this evening where current
temperatures are still below zero. Made minor adjustment to winds
along the High Plains region to reflect current observations of
light and variable winds. Otherwise, the forecast remains on track
for winds to increase through this afternoon into this evening. Webb

Southwest to westerly winds will increase across airfields tonight
with a quick moving weather system along with west to northwesterly
flow aloft. Broken to scattered cloud coverage continues through the
afternoon becoming overcast by tonight. Snow and rain is expected to
begin this evening along the Rocky Mountain Front where mountain
obstruction will continue. As westerly flow aloft strengthens this
evening, mountain wave turbulence continues for Southwest Montana
Mountains and the Rocky Mountain Front. Blowing snow continues
across North Central Montana airfields and KENS through the TAF
period which brings periodically reduced visibility to terminals.
Rain and snow mix is expected early this evening along the Rocky
Mountain that will transition over to all snow through the night. A
chance of isolated snow showers across Central Montana tomorrow
afternoon that may bring reduced visibility at times to Central

foreseeable future as the Arctic freeze slowly subsides and gives
way to milder conditions this weekend into next week. As a reminder,
ice jams are unpredictable in when they form and how they break up.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 430 AM MST Sat Dec 24 2022/

Today through Christmas Day night...Northwest H500 flow over the
Northern Rockies early this morning will become increasingly zonal
through the day as a fast moving shortwave, currently over the
the Eastern Pacific, slides east and flattens out transient
ridging currently building in from the Pacific Northwest. At the
surface, lee-side surface trough will begin to sharpen throughout
the day as an area of low pressure develops in Central Alberta
this afternoon and moves southeast to Southern Saskatchewan by
Sunday morning. South to west surface winds along the Rocky
Mountain Front, Montana Hwy 200 corridor, and in the north-south
orientated valleys in Southwest Montana (especially the Madison
Valley) will continue to increase throughout the day as the
surface pressure gradient strengthens and H700 cross barrier flow
increases to around 50- 80kts, with wind speeds/gusts expected to
peak across these areas and the remainder of the CWA from the
evening hours tonight through Sunday morning. Current NBM4.1
probabilistic data suggest a low (10 to 40%) chance that wind
gusts exceed 55 mph across the Montana Hwy 200 corridor in Central
Montana, with a moderate (40-70%) to high (greater than 70%)
chance that gusts exceed 55 mph along the Rocky Mountain Front and
adjacent plains out to the I-15 corridor in North Central
Montana. Additionally, there is a moderate (40-70%) chance that
wind gusts exceed 75 mph for areas west of the US Hwy 89 corridor
along the Rocky Mountain Front. Would not be surprise to see wind
gusts approach 90-100 mph across this region given favorable
conditions for mountain wave activity. These exceptionally strong
winds combined with a widespread and deep snow pack is expected to
set the stage for blizzard conditions, with a Blizzard Warning in
place for the Rocky Mountain Front, Eastern Glacier, Western
Toole, and Central Pondera Counties. While temperatures will warm
above the freezing mark across these areas through Sunday, expect
the shear magnitude of the wind to overcome any crusting that
develops across the top of the snowpack. Whiteout conditions and
complete lane blockages are expected across the Blizzard Warned
area, with numerous roads already closed as of early this morning.
Further south and east along the Montana Hwy 200 corridor, a
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through midnight tonight
for blowing and drifting snow, which will lead to reductions in
visibility and the potential for partial lane blockages. Further
expansion of this Winter Weather Advisory may be needed with
future shifts to include surrounding areas should blowing/drifting
snow become impactful. Winds will gradually decrease across
Southwest through North Central Montana during the afternoon and
evening hours on Sunday as surface high pressure drops south from
Alberta in wake of a Pacific front associated with the surface low
moving across Southern Saskatchewan.

As the ridge flattens throughout the day, expect a plume of Pacific
moisture to stream eastward and across the Continental Divide,
especially from the late afternoon through the morning hours on
Sunday. This will lead to a period of accumulating snow along the
Continental Divide, especially from the Montana Hwy 200 corridor
points north to the International Border. Snowfall accumulations
across this region of generally 4-8" can be expected for
elevations above 5000ft, which includes Marias Pass. Additionally,
as the Pacific front crosses the region tonight through Sunday,
expect snow to develop across the mountains of Central Montana,
with generally 3- 6" of snow possible across the Little Belt
Mountains including Kings Hill Pass. For lower elevations, a
combination of rain and/or snow is expected with the passage of
the front. Given cold ground temperatures and the potential for
shallow Arctic air to linger in protected valleys, any light rain
falling onto these cold surfaces could lead to a light glaze of
ice. - Moldan

Monday and Monday night...Westerly flow aloft increases once again
on Monday, scouring any lingering colder air from Sunday out of the
Milk River Valley area by the late afternoon hours. H700 winds
approach 50 kts at times, though NBM 4.1 probabilities for surface
wind gusts of 55 mph or higher are still generally running well
below 50 percent, expect along the Rocky Mountain Front and over
some of the eastern aspects of the central ranges. I will hold off
on high wind products, but note that widespread 30 to 55 mph wind
gusts can be expected over much of North-central MT and the
north/south oriented southwest valleys. Most of the region will be
precipitation free aside from some mountain snow, mostly along the
immediate eastern slopes of the Northern Divide.

Tuesday through next Saturday...Ensembles remain in decent agreement
with a Pacific trough moving through the Northern Rockies Tuesday
and Wednesday, though the most significant portion of the wave may
stay south of the CWA. Regardless, accumulating snow is expected for
mountain areas and along the Divide. Some deterministic models are
now showing a weak surface front approaching the Hi-Line area, which
will need to be monitored for potential light accumulating snow. The
most impactful conditions from snow and blowing snow still looks to
be mostly confined to southwestern locations along the ID/WY border.
NBM 4.1 48 hr snowfall probabilities through 5 am Thursday haven't
changed much, still running in the 50 to 80 percent range for 6
inches or more of snow for this area. The EC Extreme Forecast Index
also continues with a slight signal for anomalous winds and
snowfall. Other areas will see breezy to windy conditions, a few
rain/snow showers, and near to above average temperatures through
mid-week. NBM probabilities for wind gusts of 55 mph or greater are
below 50 percent for most locations. The unsettled pattern continues
for the second half of the week, with a parade of systems bringing
periods of mostly mountain snow. Temperatures should remain at or
slightly below average for this time of year. -RCG
