Satellite imagery shows some areas of low clouds, primarily across portions of SW MT this morning, but some patchy low clouds are also present across north-central MT, mainly near and to the N and E of Havre. These clouds will dissipate through the rest of this morning with clear to partly cloudy skies and dry conditions prevailing otherwise across the area today. Surface high pressure centered across the area this morning provides mainly light winds through early this afternoon with an uptick in SW winds across areas along the east slopes of the Rockies beginning this afternoon and evening as high pressure shifts east with weak troughing developing in the lee of the Rockies. Cool and generally dry conditions are expected today; however, southwesterly winds will be on the increase over North-central Montana late in the day, especially along the Rocky Mountain Front. Friday and Saturday will be quite windy, with scattered rain and snow showers, mostly over higher terrain. Mostly dry conditions for this afternoon through Friday night across the region. There is high probability for gusty winds tonight along the Rocky Mountain Front, with gusts reaching up to 45 to 55 mph. Temperatures steadily begin to increase today and lasting through Saturday night as a warm front is expected to move through the area for the end of the week bringing temperatures to seasonably average Friday and Saturday. A weather system developing over the Pacific Northwest today will move through our region Friday night through Sunday bringing a variety of precipitation and strong winds. Along the Rocky Mountain Front, precipitation will begin as snow and rain then transition over to all snow by Saturday morning. The adjacent Plains region and Southwest Montana will see rain to begin with then snow and rain as temperatures quickly fall below freezing then all snow through Saturday night. With wind gusts expected to exceed 65 mph along the Rocky Mountain Front and adjacent Plains regions, a High Wind Watch has been issued from Friday afternoon until Saturday afternoon. Westerly winds can be expected to be between 35 mph and 45 mph with gusts reaching as high as 65 mph for portions of Central Montana and North Central Montana. Along the Rocky Mountain Front, there is high probability that gusts could reach up to 80 mph. Gusty winds begin diminishing Saturday evening across the area as the weather system exits are our area. Cold arctic air ushers in behind the exiting weather system, with high probability of overnight lows reaching in the teens and twenties for Sunday morning. -Webb Sunday through next Wednesday...A much colder and potentially snowier pattern is looking more likely for Sunday through much of next week as Arctic air becomes established at the lower levels and southwesterly flow aloft brings moisture and shortwave disturbances over the Northern Rockies. The most impactful weather in terms of combined snow and cold looks to be Sunday night through Tuesday as a the core of cold air builds in on the north/northwest side of passing low pressure system. Although specific snowfall amounts remain uncertain at this time due to the trek of the low, very cold temperatures will ensure more widespread impacts to both North-central and Southwest Montana compared to the previous events.
