Patchy fog will be possible this morning across
Southwest Montana. Otherwise, dry and pleasant conditions are
expected today and much of Wednesday across much of the region.
Winds pick up Wednesday afternoon across the Rocky Mountain Front
and expand eastward Thursday as a weather system brings cooler
temperatures, rain, and mountain snow to end the week.

Morning update has been published, with only minor adjustments
made to better align hourly temperature trends towards current
observations (most locations across Central and North Central
Montana began the morning a little warmer given limited decoupling
during the overnight hours). Otherwise the remainder of the
forecast is handling the situation well over the next 24 hours,
with breezy and gusty westerly winds expected across most of
Southwest through North Central Montana over the period,
especially during the mid-afternoon through early evening hours

VFR conditions are expected area wide today, with just some areas of
gusty surface winds across the plains. High clouds will gradually
filter in today, but they should not have any significant impact on
aviation. Will have to watch for some late night/early morning fog
at KWYS, but not enough confidence to put in the TAF yet. Ludwig

Today and tomorrow...

To start the period, zonal to weakly southwesterly flow aloft is
in place. Satellite imagery this morning shows a general
decreasing trend in cloud cover from northwest to southeast across
the region. It would not be shocking if patchy fog develops
across Southwest Montana valleys this morning, given rain in the
area yesterday evening. Any fog that develops will diminish within
a few hours of sunrise this morning. A weak shortwave traversing
the zonal flow will pass to the north today, keeping most rain
chances north of the Canadian border. Additionally, a weak
surface low will shift eastward from southern AB into SK, which
will promote breezy westerly winds along the Hi-Line through the
evening. Overall, a pleasant day is expected, with daytime highs a
touch cooler than yesterday.

A broad upper trough will begin to approach the region Wednesday. At
the surface, a lee cyclone will begin to develop across southern AB.
This will act to increase westerly to southwesterly surface winds
across much of the region in the afternoon. Cross barrier flow
around 50kts will be possible late Wednesday afternoon into
Wednesday night, raising concerns for strong winds along the Rocky
Mountain Front and adjacent plains. NBM 4.1 probabilistic
guidance gives an ~ 50-70% chance that wind gusts exceed 55 mph in
the aforementioned areas late Wednesday afternoon through the
night into Thursday. Thus, I have elected to hoist a high wind
watch for the Rocky Mountain Front and eastern Glacier county,
valid Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening. Precipitation
associated with the approaching trough/lee cyclone will be
confined to areas along the Continental Divide through the day
Wednesday.

Wednesday night through Friday...

The aforementioned lee cyclone will deepen further overnight
Wednesday as it pulls away from the Canadian Rockies. This system
features multiple impacts. First, continuing with the wind theme, a
relatively strong pressure gradient will develop across North-
central Montana, inducing gusty to perhaps strong northwesterly
winds during the day Thursday across much of North-central and
portions of Southwest Montana. A high wind watch was issued where
confidence was highest for winds reaching criteria, which was over
North-central Montana. Expansion of this watch may be necessary with
subsequent updates.

The second impact from this event will be rain and snow Thursday
into Friday. As the system begins to pull away from the Rockies,
precipitation will wrap around the northwest and western sides of
the system. Impactful snow will primarily be confined to the
mountains along the northern Continental Divide and northerly
upslope regions of the Little Belts, but lower elevation snow will
be possible Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Given recent warm
temperature trends, impacts are not expected at this time at lower
elevations if snow does fall. This system will be monitored for
potential winter highlights in subsequent updates.

Saturday into early next week...

Ensembles/cluster guidance suggest the trough responsible for rain,
snow, and wind will shift eastward away from the area this
weekend. Confidence wanes however with the progression of an
upper ridge over the eastern Pacific Ocean this weekend. A
positioning further west would promote further chances for daily
showers, while progression eastward would promote drier
conditions. Regardless, expect cold mornings (Temps near or below
freezing) Saturday and Sunday, with high temperatures trending
toward normal heading into next week. -AM
