.SYNOPSIS...

Weak high pressure over the area will break down through tonight,
but the region should remain dry and breezy with slightly above
normal temperatures. A disturbance in a strong westerly flow
aloft will then bring precipitation to the area, especially in the
mountains, along with a potential for widespread strong winds.
This weather system will exit the area Tuesday night into
Wednesday, bringing a drier and warmer period to the region to
end the work week.

.UPDATE...

Generally quiet conditions are expected today as weak high
pressure moves through the region. South to southwesterly breezes
can be expected over the plains and the north to south oriented
valleys of the southwest. A weak shortwave will bring a chance for
a few showers along the Divide and possibly the central mountains
this evening and tonight. Otherwise, expect dry weather for the
short term. Then the focus turns to the stronger weather system
expected for Monday/Tuesday. -RCG

VFR conditions will continue over the area through at least the next
24 hours. High- and mid-level clouds are increasing as an upper
level ridge flattens. Southwest winds will also become gusty this
afternoon, but gusts will mostly be in the 25 to 35 kt at times,
while gusts in excess of 40 kt will be more likely on the Rocky
Mountain Front. The increasing winds aloft may also cause periods of
mountain wave turbulence. Conditions begin to deteriorate as a
strong weather system arrives from the west during the day on Monday.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 401 AM MDT Sun Apr 3 2022/

Today and Tonight... This will be the relatively calm period
between yesterday and the Monday/Tuesday period. A weak high
pressure ridge will keep the area mostly dry for most of today, as
westerly winds remain gusty over the plains. Winds will also
increase through favored north-south oriented valleys in the
southwest. Overall, though, winds will quite a bit lighter than
what occurred on Saturday. Clouds will increase from the west
ahead of an approaching shortwave trough, which may bring periods
of light mountain showers. Temperatures will also remain slightly
above normal.

Monday through Tuesday Night... Active weather returns for this
period, as a second, stronger shortwave trough increases winds
over the area and taps into deep Pacific moisture from an
atmospheric river. The passage of a cold front Monday afternoon
will help translate the strong mid-level winds of 45 to 60 kt
down to the surface. Unlike most high wind events that are focused
on the plains, these mid-level winds will move over most of the
forecast area of north central, central, and southwest Montana
with a strong widespread surface pressure gradient. Probabilistic
ensemble models continue to show high (80+ percent) probabilities
for 55+ mph wind gust potential at times across almost all of the
area. Stronger gusts of 65+ mph are possible (50+ percent
probability) across much of the area, but the probability remains
high for such winds on the Rocky Mountain Front and at favored
downslope/west-east oriented valley areas, even into southwest
Montana. In fact, models indicate the potential for stronger mid-
level wind jet to move over portions of west central, central, and
southwest Montana Monday night, so have increased winds there for
that period. Will therefore continue the High Wind Watch as is.
Soils may still be dry enough over the plains and in some valleys
to cause reduced visibility at times in blowing dust before the
precipitation moves into those areas Monday night. These dry
conditions will also cause increased fire weather concerns, as any
new fire start in relatively dry grasses will spread rapidly in
these winds.

While showers will mostly be a rain at those lower elevations,
wet heavy snow will fall in the mountains. The ensembles indicate
a high probability of at least 2 inches of snowfall at mountain
pass level, while the potential for 4+ inches of snowfall is only
high well above pass level. There is still some uncertainty as to
just how much blowing of this wet snow will occur, but the snow
will likely become lighter and easier to blow around as the winds
increase Monday night into Tuesday; therefore, a Winter Weather
Advisory may be needed at and above mountain pass level. Showers
and winds will gradually decrease Tuesday night as the trough
exits the area to the east. Temperatures will remain above normal
into Monday night, but they will fall to between 5 and 10 degrees
below normal behind the cold front Tuesday into Tuesday night.

Wednesday through Friday... The exiting trough will deepen as it
moves across the central and eastern United States Wednesday
through Friday, which will allow a high pressure ridge to
strengthen over the western part of the country. As a result, this
will be a relatively dry period, and breezy northwest winds on
Wednesday will decrease and shift more southerly. This will help
warm temperatures from near normal on Wednesday to between 10 and
15 degrees above normal by Friday, with some areas possibly
warming into the lower 70s.

Saturday through next Sunday... A low pressure trough from off the
Pacific coast of western Canada will move into the area for the
weekend, which will likely bring periods of showers as
temperatures fall back below normal.
