.DISCUSSION...

Today through Christmas Eve night (Saturday night)...Arctic airmass
was slowly eroding early this morning, with higher elevations across
Southwest and Central Montana and areas immediately in lee of the
Continental Divide having warmed into the single digits below to
teens below zero. Expect temperatures to continue to warm through
the day today into the teens to single digits above zero along and
south of the Montana Hwy 200 corridor across Central Montana and
west of the US Hwy 89 corridor in North Central Montana, with the
single digits below to teens below zero expected north and east of
these areas. This will be especially true for the Milk River Valley
in Hill and Blaine Counties today, where high temperatures will
struggle to warm to near 10 degrees below zero. A fast moving mid-
level wave, which is helping to usher in the "warmer" air across the
Northern Rockies today, will also bring predominately light
accumulating snow from late this morning through the overnight hours
tonight. Snowfall accumulations of generally 0.5" to 1.5" are
expected across most lower elevations, with up to 3" across most
mountains passes. Some of the higher elevations across Central and
Southwest Montana may see accumulations approach 6", but given the
generally lower amounts expected over mountain passes we have
elected to withhold from issuing any Winter Weather Advisories at
this time.

Focus then shifts to the increasing south to west winds along the
Rocky Mountain Front, Montana Hwy 200 corridor across Central
Montana, and in the Madison Valley from the afternoon hours today
through Saturday night. While probabilistic data suggest a very low
chance that wind speeds will exceed High Wind criteria in the
Madison Valley over this timeframe, expect frequent wind gusts of 35-
45 mph to create areas of blowing/drifting snow. This situation will
need to be monitored with future shifts for the potential need of a
Winter Weather Advisory for blowing snow should widespread
visibility reductions develop. Further north, NBM4.1 probabilistic
data continues to suggest a moderate (greater than 40%) to high
(greater than 70%) chance that wind gusts will exceed 65 mph along
the Rocky Mountain Front and out east to Eastern Glacier, Western
Toole, and Central Pondera counties, with a low (10% to 20%) chance
that wind gusts exceed 55 mph along the Montana Hwy 200 corridor
across Central Montana, especially from Saturday afternoon through
Saturday night. We have elected to continue the High Wind Watch for
the Rocky Mountain Front, Eastern Glacier, Western Toole, and
Central Pondera from Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon
given the latest wrinkle to the upcoming event; which was the
issuance of a Winter Storm Watch for the potential of ground
blizzard conditions across the same areas. Current thinking is that
snowpack will be receptive to significant blowing and drifting from
Saturday evening through early Sunday morning, which could lead to
whiteout conditions and partial/complete lane blockages. Should this
line of thinking continue and a Blizzard Warning is issued, then the
Blizzard Warning could serve the dual purpose of a High Wind Warning
for a portion of the event. - Moldan

Christmas Day through Monday night...Strong, gusty winds and the
blowing snow threat over the North-central MT and portions of the
southwest begin to subside by Sunday afternoon. A weak Canadian cold
front dives southeastward and brushes the plains with a brief period
of colder air for Sunday and Sunday night before gusty westerly
winds bring a return to mild conditions on Monday. The latest
probabilities for wind gusts over 55 mph or higher are currently
running well below 50 percent for Monday, expect along the Rocky
Mountain Front. Any left over snowfall will be mostly confined to
mountain areas on Sunday and mostly along the Continental Divide for
Monday.

Tuesday through next Friday...Ensembles are in decent agreement
with a Pacific trough moving through the Northern Rockies Tuesday
and Wednesday, bringing accumulating snow to the southwest mountains
and along the Divide. The most impactful conditions will be for
southwestern locations along the ID/WY border, where probabilities
for 6 inches of snow or more are running above 50 percent for the 48
hour period ending Thursday morning at 5 am. In addition to that
gusty winds will accompany the snow, potentially creating difficult
driving conditions for the Monida Pass area. These conditions are
also reflected in the EC Extreme Forecast Index, with a slight
signal for anomalous winds and snowfall. Other areas will see breezy
to windy conditions, a few rain/snow showers, and near to above
average temperatures through mid-week. The unsettles pattern
continues for the second half of the weekend, with snow staying
mostly in the mountains, but temperatures cool to near or slightly
below climatological averages. -RCG

Periods of light snow and lowered clouds will reduce visibility to
IFR/LIFR conditions across several terminals in Central and North-
central Montana, specifically KCTB and KGTF through the early
portion of this TAF period. Periods of heavy snow possible. MVFR/IFR
conditions can be expected through the remainder of the TAF period
as the snow bands propagate eastward. Mountain obscuration is
forecast, especially along the Rocky Mountain Front and the Little
