.SYNOPSIS...
A period of gusty north winds and snow follow the passage of an
Arctic cold front through Southwest Montana early this morning
with snow ending for most areas by late this morning. Near record
cold daytime and overnight temperatures are expected today and
tonight with dangerously cold wind chills. By Friday, warmer
temperatures are expected, with mild temperatures by Christmas Day
along with the return of strong winds.

.DISCUSSION...

Arctic frontal boundary is surging south through SW MT early this
morning, recently having moved south of I90 by 3am where many
locations are seeing temperature drops of 20 degrees or more in less
than 15 minutes. The onset of snow and gusty north winds will follow
the frontal passage through SW MT this morning, likely reaching the
Dillon, Ennis and Big Sky by 5am and continuing to the ID border
by 9am. Snow has ended across much of north-central MT while
winter weather highlights for snow continue through this morning
for much of SW MT with snow likely diminishing by 6am along and
north of I90 and ending by 9am.

A strong surface high pressure ridge and associated Arctic airmass
will continue to slide south along the Canadian Rockies into the
area today and tonight. Surface pressure should peak over west-
central MT Thursday morning around 1060mb, which will be near the
highest observed in the area (1062 mb at GTF 1983/1962 is the
record). More importantly, this will be related to the coldest
surface temperatures across the region with daytime temperatures
today likely to remain steady across north-central MT today and fall
through the day across SW MT. Record cold maximum temperatures
around -15F to -20F are likely for many locations today with daily
minimum temperature records likely to be broken at several locations
tonight as temps fall to 30 below zero or lower across most of the
area. Minimum temperatures of -40 or colder are certainly
attainable Thursday morning in some locations where skies clear
with light winds. Potential for these optimal conditions is best
across west-central into northern portions of SW MT with some of the
usually colder higher elevation valleys potentially seeing even
colder minimum temps to near -50F.

Wind chills will remain dangerously low today through tonight with
steady north winds producing readings of -40 to -55 with some
isolated higher elevation locations seeing even lower values.
Lighter winds and slowly moderating temperatures Thursday and
Friday will improve wind chills some though the hazardous
cold/wind chill conditions are likely to persist until more
significant warming spreads east across the area late Friday
though Saturday morning.

Milder conditions developing this weekend will be accompanied by
increasing west to southwest winds, which will bring another set of
hazards with blowing and drifting snow, especially early in the
transition Friday into early Saturday while the snowpack is still
loose. Potential for strong winds in excess of 55mph will increase
Saturday though Monday, initially along the Rocky Mtn Front and
across additional portions of north-central MT Sunday and Monday.
Another hazard that will continue to be monitored related to the
warming temperatures will be the increased risk for ice jams on

moderate/heavy snowfall moving southward through Southwest MT. This
band of snow will move into the Bozeman area around 08z. Snow
