The focus for snow today will shift from over Central Montana this morning more so into North Central Montana by this afternoon, with much cooler than normal temperatures. Southwest Montana should remain mostly dry with seasonal temperatures. The snow will move out tonight, but gusty downslope winds will develop on the north and east facing mountain slopes on the plains, increasing the threat for blowing snow at least through Wednesday. Although periods of winds will continue through the end of the week, drier conditions with near normal temperatures are expected. && .UPDATE... The morning update has been published. A cold front remains draped over Central MT this morning, separating Arctic air on the plains from more seasonable temperatures in the southwest. Northerly upslope snow is slowly diminishing, but shortwave energy within a northwesterly flow aloft has brought another round of snow that will move northwest to southeast, mostly impacting the Hi-line and the eastern portions of North-central MT through tonight. Temperatures for this afternoon and tonight were adjusted downward over the plains by blending CMC model data and pops were adjusted per current trends. The inherited advisories were left as is, but did trim the southwest end by canning zones 315 and 316 early (MacDonald Pass and Wolf Creek areas). Snow is expected to gradually shift northeastward this afternoon and diminish late tonight. Periods of moderate snow will be possible at KLWT, KCTB, and KHVR this afternoon, before snow comes to an end tonight. Attention then turns to the Rocky Mountain Front and adjacent plains, tonight into tomorrow, where gusty westerly winds are expected to develop. Mountain wave turbulence will be likely adjacent to the Rocky Mountain Front. Additionally, areas of blowing snow will be possible adjacent to the Rocky Mountain Front. Expect mountain obscuration through the period. Southwest Montana (KHLN, KBZN, KEKS)... VFR conditions are expected to prevail over the next 24 hours. Breezy southerly winds in the Madison River Valley may briefly reduce visibility, due to lofted snow, but confidence is too low to include in the KEKS TAF at this time. -AM Refer to weather.gov/zlc for more detailed regional aviation weather and hazard information. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 450 AM MST Tue Dec 6 2022/ Today through Tonight... Widespread snow across North Central and Central Montana has decreased temporarily early this morning on the Hi-Line, as a disturbance in the northwest flow aloft exits the area. However, snow has been persistent over Central Montana due to lingering upslope enhancement from the low level northerly winds behind a Canadian cold frontal passage. Winds have mostly decreased enough to lessen the threat for blowing snow for now. Many locations across these areas have received between 1 and 3 inches of additional snow so far overnight. The cold front has pushed south of Helena, where light snow developed after 1 am, but it is still north of Bozeman and it is unlikely to make it that far south. The frontal boundary is forecast to lift north a bit to the north-facing slopes of the Central Montana Mountains through late this morning, which will help decrease snowfall in the Helena and Great Falls areas. However, another disturbance in the flow aloft will move southeast along the strong baroclinic zone just to the north of the frontal boundary late this morning through this afternoon, which will enhance additional snowfall along and north of a Cut Bank to Lewistown line. This additional snowfall will mostly range from 1 to 2 inches, with up to 4 additional inches possible in the Bears Paw and Little Rocky Mountains. Overall, the snowfall will decrease this evening as the disturbance exits the area. Will continue the Winter Weather Advisories as is for now, but areas south of the aforementioned line may see an early enough decrease in snowfall to warrant cancelling them early. With the retreat of the frontal boundary, gusty southwest winds will likely develop on the immediate east- and north-facing slopes tonight, which could cause areas of blowing snow and may warrant an extension of the Advisories for the affected areas. Also, the lingering cold airmass may combine with more southeasterly winds on the Hi-Line to cause wind chills to approach -20 F there, so a Wind Chill Advisory may be needed as well. Wednesday... The cold front will likely move mostly out of the area, allowing a surface trough to form to the lee of the Rockies with an increasing westerly flow aloft. This will help keep the area mostly dry, except for a few mountain showers, as temperatures warm back closer to normal. However, this will also provide a favorable set-up for gusty southwest downslope winds over the plains, where there will be plenty of loose snow to blow around. The greatest threat for reduced visibility in blowing snow will be on the Rocky Mountain Front, where probabilistic and ensemble guidance continue to give a 60% or greater probability for wind gusts in excess of 50 mph. For that area, these winds do not meet High Wind criteria, but an extension of the Winter Weather Advisory for blowing snow may be needed. Thursday through Saturday... Forecast models indicate that a more progressive pattern will persist through this period. Weak disturbances in a generally westerly flow aloft will bring periods of light snow to the mountains, periods of gusty but not strong westerly winds to the plains, and overall near normal temperatures. However, no single disturbance appears to be strong enough to warrant wind or winter highlights at this time. Sunday through next Tuesday... A deep low pressure trough is forecast to move out of the Gulf of Alaska into the western United States for this period. This should slow down the progression of systems through the area and likely bring at least a few days of cooler than normal temperatures and a broader chance for snow. Anyone traveling should be prepared for difficult winter driving conditions and bitterly cold temperatures. Also, be sure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition before traveling.
