After a cold night tonight, warm air will begin to work its way back into the area on Thursday. As it does, it will collide with the existing cold air entrenched across the area, leading to widespread accumulating snowfall during the day on Thursday. Most locations will see between 2 and 5 inches of snow, with higher amounts in the mountains. && .UPDATE... 845 PM: No significant adjustments made to the forecast for this update apart from some minor temperature changes. Based on observations earlier this shift, noted that the Southwest region is not warming up as quickly as originally forecast, but is still expected to warm up throughout the day with the advancement of warm air northeastward. The abundance of highlights were left unchanged, but future shifts may want to look into potentially upgrading the Rocky Mountain Front as blizzard conditions are possible due to blowing snow Friday. Though below high wind criteria, gusty winds of 40-60 mph are expected and 4-10" of new snow expected west of Hwy 89, including Hwy 2 up to Marias Pass. Furthermore, it appears that the two floods with flood advisories are forecast to remain in "action" stage per latest gauge readings. No new news regarding the areal flood warning at Ennis Lions Club Park in Madison. 530 PM: Adjusted tonight's low temperatures to account for the current temperature at some locations within the Southwest region, ie. Dillon, which never got above zero per observations. Used NBM05 percentile as a baseline and then manually adjusted down further to ensure tonight's lows were in fact lower than the current observation. No other adjustments were made at this time. - Pierce && .AVIATION... 1055 PM MST Wed Jan 5 2022 (06/06Z TAF period) Main concern is the development of widespread moderate snowfall over the region later tonight and on Thursday. Most terminals will have LIFR/IFR conditions on Thursday for long periods of time. Snowfall near moderate intensity is likely to last about 4 to 7 hours at some terminals. Snow slowly starts to decrease in intensity from south to to north starting around 18z Thu. Snowfall starts to become more isolated towards the eastern portions of our region by 06z Fri. The return of the arctic air followed by more thaw and refreeze cycles this weekend could result in the increase of ice jams. This may cause minor flooding of farm fields and rural roadways. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 425 PM MST Wed Jan 5 2022/ One final arctic night is in store across much of our area of responsibility tonight as arctic air mass remains entrenched across most of the area. The exception to this will be across the Southwest, where warm air surging in from the southwest will have already reached the surface. The warm air will continue to advance to the northeast through the day on Thursday, riding up and over the cold air at the surface . As it does so, it will result in widespread snowfall across the area, with a focus on the area north of Helena and White Sulphur Springs and south of a line from Choteau to Landusky. In general, expect 1-3 inches across the lower elevations, though 3-6 inches is possible in the aforementioned band across the central part of the area. Isolated higher amounts will certainly be possible, especially if mesoscale banding is able to develop. In addition, model soundings indicate that the Dendritic Growth Zone (DGZ) will also be quite deep across the plains, which could help push snow ratios higher than currently forecast (currently 15-20:1). All that is to say that a few areas could still easily get some "bonus" snowfall with this event. Behind this system, winds will begin to quickly pick up as the main piece of energy associated with tomorrow's snowfall passes overhead. This is really where our attention will begin to shift, as the gusty winds will readily blow around the freshly fallen snowfall, especially along the Rocky Mountain Front. We've elected to leave the Rocky Mountain Front in a Winter Storm Warning, but significant blowing and drifting of the snow is looking quite likely in this area as winds gust in excess of 45 mph on Friday. Across the plains, we will be looking at a less severe version of blowing and drifting snow, but the blowing and drifting snow will still likely result in some areas of poor visibility and road conditions. The biggest question across the plains will be how much will the above freezing temperatures limit the blowing snow. Right now it appears that the warmer temperatures should help, but be alert if you will be traveling on Friday. Behind this system, a brief cooldown will arrive as we receive a glancing blow from an arctic air mass, bringing a brief cooldown to the plains. However, as upper level ridging builds into the area to start next week, temperatures will gradually climb into the 40s, with limited chances for precipitation.
