.SYNOPSIS...
Dry and milder weather with night and morning Valley fog and
stratus expected over Christmas weekend. An extended period of
significant wet weather with high snow levels next week.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper level ridge in place will bring another quiet day to the
area before we transition into a very active weather pattern that
will last at least through next weekend. Dense fog has developed
across much of the Valley and we can expect dense fog to last into
the mid to late morning. We still have a strong substance
inversion just above the surface and it does look a bit stronger
than yesterday. This may trap some of the moisture in the low
levels as stratus. Highs will be mild once again but cooler
temperatures can be expected in any areas that have fog/stratus
linger. High clouds build in Sunday night and that will limit some
of the fog development but some fog will be possible across the
Valley.

Deep troughing is then going to build over the west and that will
bring multiple rounds of rain and snow through the week into next
weekend. Light showers will be possible starting Monday afternoon
mainly over the northern mountains as warm air advection start to
develop over the area. Low level winds will amplify Monday night
as the trough digs strengthening the warm front and bring
widespread moderate to heavy rain over NorCal. This system will
tap into deep Pacific moisture with the Integrated Water Vapor
(IVT) pushing upwards of 1000 kg/ms and PWATs 1.0-2.0". The warm
front with this system looks pretty strong and we will likely see
temperatures slowly warm overnight Monday as it pushes through the
area. The cold front will then work south through NorCal Monday
morning into the afternoon. Moderate to heavy rain can also be
expected along and ahead of the front. Activity will become more
showery during the afternoon and evening except over the mountains
where upslope flow will keep widespread rain/snow going into
Wednesday morning. Localized flooding will be possible with this
rain as streams and creeks rise and roadway flooding of poorly
drained areas will become an issue as well.

Some weak instability builds in right behind the cold front and
that may bring a thunderstorm or two during late morning into the
early overnight mainly from around Stockton north to Redding east
into the foothills. CAPE looks limited and the thunderstorm
threat should remain isolated.

The amplifying low level jet is going to bring strong winds to the
area Monday night into Tuesday. 850 mb winds increase to 50-70
knots ahead of the cold front with 700 mb winds 60-80 knots.
Right now wind gusts of 35-55 mph can be expected across the
Valley with the highest gusts in the northern Sacramento Valley
and 50-85 mph winds over the mountains.

With a good stream of deep Pacific moisture we will see high snow
levels with the onset of the precip with them 7500-8500 feet. Cold
air will begin to build in Tuesday afternoon and we will see snow
levels start to fall falling to 4500-5500 feet Wednesday. 12-32"
of snow is expected above 6500 feet with a few inches above 5000
feet through Wednesday afternoon. QPF totals through Wednesday
afternoon are looking to be 1.50-3" in the Valley, 2.50-4.50" in
the foothills, and 4-6" over the mountains. We are expecting a
period of moderate to heavy rain but convective rain is looking
limited, this should keep rain rates below burn scar thresholds.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Thursday THROUGH Sunday)...
Deep troughing is going to remain in place over the West
throughout the extended period. This will continue our active
weather with multiple rounds of rain and snow. Ensembles disagree
with the exact timing on some of the waves of precip but it looks
like we will see a short wave Thursday with another one Friday
bringing widespread rain and snow. Additional rounds of widespread
rain and snow is expected on New Year's Eve although this system
is favoring a more southern track with the heaviest precip from
about I-80 south. Moisture levels will remain elevated with all of
these systems and moderate to locally heavy rain will be possible
from time to time. Snow levels generally look to be between
5000-6000 feet but will rise above 6500 feet for a time on Friday.
Mountain travel will be difficult mainly above 5500 through the
weekend.
