.SYNOPSIS...A strong cold front will continue to make its way
across central and southern Utah today, bringing winter weather to
much of the area. Another system will bring accumulating snow to
much of central and southern Utah Tuesday into Wednesday.

&&

.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 12Z THURSDAY)...A shortwave trough
currently over southern Idaho will continue to eject east through
northwest Wyoming this morning. Upstream, another shortwave
disturbance associated with a strong jet is diving into western
Nevada, helping to carve out a broad trough across the western
CONUS. The surface cold front associated with the initial wave has
already pushed south of Utah County. However, a frontolytic trend
owing to the egress of the associated upper disturbance allowed the
precipitation band to fall apart as it entered Utah. However, the
past couple of hours has seen the beginning of a frontogenetic trend
as the upstream trough starts to move east across Nevada. The
precipitation band redeveloped from the GSL deserts through the
northern Weber and Davis Counties as a result.

Expect snow to fill into across west-central Utah through Salt Lake
and Utah Counties and southwest Wyoming and the Uintas early this
morning as the precipitation band continues to expand while slowly
shifting south. Most models continue to indicate the best
precipitation intensities late morning through afternoon and
focusing across Utah, Juab, Millard, and Beaver Counties and adjacent
mountains. These areas will likely see the greatest accumulations
with travel concerns for the I-15 corridor through central Utah
along with portions of I-70. Precipitation will spread into southern
Utah by late this afternoon and early evening before gradually
winding down overnight. All but the lowest valleys of southern Utah
can expect to see snow as the primary precipitation type.

Besides accumulating snow, another concern is for gusty winds across
far southern Utah ahead of and with the cold front this afternoon
and early evening. A favorable pressure gradient and H7 winds in
excess of 40mb provides a good setup for gusty winds. Mean wind
gusts from the HREF show widespread gusts in excess of 40 mph.

As precipitation winds down tonight, a backdoor cold front
associated with an arctic airmass over the northern Plains will move
across southwest Wyoming into northeast Utah. This will result in
quite cold overnight lows in these areas. Meanwhile GSL surface to
H7 lapse rates are enough to generate the instability to produce
lake-effect snow tonight. However, low level moisture availability
and shifting winds are not still not ideal for any organized bands.
If anything does form, the most likely areas of impact would be
northern Salt Lake through Davis Counties.

A third shortwave trough will carve south along the West Coast
states tomorrow and is expected to pinch off into a closed low over
Nevada. Ahead of it, southwest flow will increase over Arizona and
southwest Nevada and lead to a strengthening yet again of the cold
front over southern Utah. This will set up a period of snow across
portions of southern and central Utah from around late Tuesday
morning into Wednesday. The relatively long duration combined with
periods of heavier precipitation is expected to result in
significant snow accumulations. In addition, the airmass is expected
to be cold enough to allow for snow even in the St. George area,
with this mainly occurring late Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Overall, temperatures will be trending colder each day through
midweek. By Wednesday, afternoon maxes will likely fail to rise
above freezing across most of northern and central Utah. Overnight
mins will also be very cold, especially across northeast Utah and
southwest Wyoming where the influence of the arctic boundary will
bring overnight mins back to near or below zero, especially Tuesday
night and Wednesday night.

As if all this wasn't enough, there is also a potential for gusty
canyon or downslope winds along the Wasatch Front Tuesday night. The
arctic boundary continues to strengthen during this time, with
models indicating a fairly tight pressure gradient across southwest
Wyoming through the Wasatch Range. The main uncertainty lies in what
it will do closer to crest level. The GFS is producing good H7 winds
of 30kt and good cold advection and thus has the best setup among
deterministic models. Most other models are either not as strong with
the cold advection or only has easterly H7 winds briefly. This
canyon/downslope wind potential is something to watch closely going
forward.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z/5AM Thursday)...A trailing wave will be
following in the footsteps of the larger Tue/Wed storm. This storm
will only impact northern Utah with light snow, mainly in the
mountains. Afterwards, temperatures across the CWA will rise 15-20
degrees between Thursday and Monday as a ridge of high pressure
builds back into the area, resulting in dry conditions through the
remainder of the period.

The aforementioned trailing wave approaches northern Utah Thursday
evening. 700 mb temperatures will be near -18C along with west to
northwest flow. Moisture will be limited with this system. Mountain
locations will be lucky to squeeze out more than a few hundredths of
QPF. All precipitation should clear the area by late Friday/early
Saturday. High pressure will build in the wake of the exiting
system. As high pressure builds in another quiet period will
accompany it.

By Monday another shortwave is evident within guidance, however this
wave currently looks to just bring slight cooling aloft with
potentially more high pressure to follow.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Conditions at the KSLC terminal will go back and
forth between low-end VFR and MVFR, with occasional pockets of IFR
conditions during snow showers. A cold front has swept through the
terminal. This should maintain a northerly wind component through
the period. Mountain obscuration is likely as CIGs will be hovering
around 5-6kft. Periods of snow, especially between 18-23Z, will
reduce VIS to MVFR and IFR along with CIGs below 3kft. A band of
heavier snow is expected to form in the morning/afternoon, but
confidence is leaning towards this being just south of the terminal.

REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions through the
morning hours will give way to MVFR/IFR conditions as snow showers
develop, especially near and south of KSLC. A cold front has moved
through the northern portion of the CWA leading to northerly winds
in the northern half of the region. In southern Utah winds are gusty
out of the southwest. CIGs will be below 6kft for most of the period
in the northern half and the end of the period for the southern half
of the CWA, leading to mountain obscuration. A heavy band of snow is
expected to develop and persist for several hours near central Utah
and southwest Wyoming during the morning/afternoon followed by
scattered snow showers.
