.SYNOPSIS...A very cold system will bring unusually cold
tempratures, strong winds and snow to portions of northern and
central Utah through Thursday. Another weak system will impact the
area Friday.
&&
.SHORT TERM (Through 00Z Friday)...A lot to talk about with this
short term discussion, on point with how winter 2022 has been
going.
Afternoon satellite and upper air analysis clearly indicates an
amplified upper level ridge off the Pacific Coast, with a broad
upper level trough across western Canada. 700mb temperatures at
the core of this arctic airmass are naer -32C, more akin to 500mb
temperatures. A strong jet is noted on the west side of the
trough.
This trough will continue to build south and east into the
Intermountain Region tonight into Wednesday morning. Expect
sufficient forcing for mountain precipitation to continue through
the overnight hours across the northern Utah mountains. By early
Wednesday afternoon, the arctic air will begin to push southward
into northern Utah, with 700mb temperatures falling to near -12C
by 21Z. Looking at model soundings, the arctic airmass is very
shallow and this may be hindering a portion of the guidance from
properly resolving how cold some of the northern valleys could
be...particularly any guidance that is bias corrected or limited
in resolution in the lower levels. By Wednesday evening, 700mb
temperatures will fall to -14C near I-80 to -19C near Randolph.
Current thinking is the coldest air and wind chills will build
into the northern Wasatch Front from Ogden to the Idaho line, the
Cache Valley, the western Uinta Basin, Uinta County WY, and the
Bear River Valley. Wind chill warnings have been issued for most
of these locations. Held off on Ogden to SLC as there is some
question if wind chills will fall below zero...however am
concerned the previously mentioned model issues are
underrepresenting how far south this shallow arctic intrusion will
go. Future shifts will need to reassess the threat for Weber,
Davis and Salt Lake County.
An area of light snow is expected with the main surface front
Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night across northern Utah.
After coordination with UDOT, expect accumulating snow will impact
the Wednesday evening commute for SLCo and north to the Idaho
border. Based on this expectation, issued a winter weather
advisory for these locations.
700mb winds peak at around 50 to as much as 70kts with this
system starting Wednesday morning/early afternoon and continuing
into Thursday. Widespread gusts to 60 mph with some areas seeing
wind gusts 85 mph + can be expected across the northern Utah
mountains. Given snow accumulations around 6 to 12 inches plus
very strong winds and blowing and drifting snow, upgraded the
northern mountains to a winter storm warning. Likewise, added a
winter storm warning for Uinta County, WY due to strong winds,
snow and blowing/drifting snow.
Finally, with strong 700mb winds plus downslope flow, expect the
potential for 60 mph + winds in the western Uinta Basin and
Castle Country along the east side of the area from roughly Castle
Dale to Fremont Junction Wednesday afternoon into Thursday
morning.
Any snow will gradually end Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Main takeaways:
1. It will be VERY cold with the combination of very cold
temperatures and elevated winds across all of northern Utah
Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Anyone with outdoor plans
should consider with wind chills this cold, frostbite is likely in
30 minutes or less for any exposed skin. Any unsheltered
populations will be especially prone to hypothermia. Pets and
livestock may also be prone to impacts from the wind chills.
2. Accumulating snow will impact the Wednesday evening commute
for the Wasatch Front (mainly north of Lehi), the Cache Valley and
the Tooele Valley. Be prepared for winter driving conditions and
allow more time to reach your destinations.
3. Winds will be very strong for the northern mountains, Uinta
County, WY, western Uinta Basin and Castle Country Wednesday late
morning/early afternoon through at least Thursday morning. Expect
areas of blowing and drifting snow to impact any exposed areas.
.LONG TERM (After 00Z Friday)...Deterministic and ensemble
guidance have good agreement on a ridge positioned near the
Pacific coast Thursday night through Friday. Shortwave energy in a
west to northwest flow is expected to reach Utah by Friday
morning. This is expected to bring light snow across portions of
the state. There are differences in track, with the main
uncertainty on southern extent of snow. The GEFS has snow
predominately in northern and central Utah, while the EPS has the
shortwave tracking further south, bringing better snow chances for
that portion of the state, especially the mountains. With either
scenario, at least light snow is likely in the north. Valley
accumulations of mainly 1-3", with the best chances to approach or
slightly exceed higher end values in northern Utah. Minimal
accumulation is expected in southern valleys, but more of a
southern track would bring slightly higher amounts. Northern
mountain accumulations of 3-6" with locally higher amounts are
expected. Accumulations are expected to decrease further south.
The ridge will push inland Saturday, with southwest Wyoming and
Utah with a drier northwest flow. Models bring a slight chance for
another shortwave to graze southwest Wyoming and northern Utah,
which would bring light snow accumulations. Most of Utah will be
dry throughout Saturday.
The ridge will be further east Sunday, although the axis will
still be west of Utah. Ensemble members are in good agreement on a
shortwave bringing a chance for light precipitation for southwest
Wyoming and northern Utah. Various shortwaves prior to this are
expected to not allow for strong valley inversions to establish.
With that, temperatures into the 40s for most valleys that
afternoon would allow for rain, although confidence is low on
details.
Ensembles have good agreement in the ridge axis crossing Utah
Monday, where many valleys would have the warmest conditions of
the week.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Inversion conditions will maintain MVFR
visibility through tonight along with generally light and variable
winds. South winds are expected to mix down to the terminal by
14z Tuesday allowing for VFR visibility. There is a 30 percent
chance these winds to not mix down and MVFR visibility persists
into the afternoon hours. A strong cold front will cross the
terminal around 00Z Wednesday bringing a period of IFR to LIFR
snowfall and gusty north winds.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Light and diurnal winds
will prevail through the night. Beginning on Wednesday morning,
strong southwesterly winds will be possible in northern Utah.
Gusts up to 30kts will be possible in these areas with southwest
Wyoming and far northeastern portions of the CWA seeing gusts up
to 60kts. CIGS will drop to around 5kft before snow showers begin
to move in from the north. Scattered precipitation is expected to
begin Wednesday morning in northern Utah and southwest Wyoming and
last throughout the day. Associated with a cold front, the winds
will shift to the north beginning in northern Utah in the mid-
afternoon.
