Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Lingering light snow showers will continue across
portions of northern Utah today as a storm system weakens across the
area. The next winter storm will begin with strong winds Monday and
then widespread precipitation later Monday through late Wednesday.

&&

.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 00Z WEDNESDAY)...The cold front that moved
into northern Utah yesterday evening and the associated
precipitation band is currently stalled over central Utah just south
of Provo. The front is trending weaker now with the parent trough
now over the northern Great Plains. Despite this, given ample
moisture in place owing to the atmospheric river event across
northern Utah yesterday, the front remains fairly productive in
terms of precipitation at this time. However, the trend will be for
precipitation to decrease over the next few hours. With the bulk of
the precipitation now south of I-80, have expired/cancelled the
winter weather highlights across the north, leaving the Warning for
the southern Wasatch and Advisory for the western Uintas in place.

As an upstream trough amplifies over the west coast today, southerly
flow aloft will develop over the area. This will cause the existing
boundary to lift north as a warm front later today, and expect
showers to continue develop near this boundary as a result. However,
additional snow accumulations will remain relatively minor and
limited mainly to the higher terrain.

The southerly winds will increase significantly later tonight
through tomorrow. Models continue to indicate H7 winds to 60kt
tomorrow afternoon while a southerly surface pressure gradient
tightens in response to strong pressure falls across the west
deserts. Expect this to result in a wind event with widespread gusts
greater than 40 mph across much of western Utah tomorrow, with the
potential for localized gusts greater than 60 mph. The HREF ensemble
mean is certainly on board with this idea, while the ensemble max is
producing much larger areas of 60 mph winds.

A fairly strong cold front will develop upstream of these stronger
winds, and this front is progged to reach far northwest Utah by
early Monday evening. However, further amplification rather than
forward progression of the larger upstream trough as embedded
disturbances rotate around it will cause the front to slow and
weaken. This is the consensus between the deterministic models,
where the boundary becomes frontolytic then lifts back to the
northwest as a warm front. As such, the heaviest precipitation
Monday into early Tuesday is expected to remain across northwest
Utah. However, precipitation will continue to develop near the warm
front Tuesday afternoon, aided by a strong upper jet punching into
the area. In addition, moisture increases late Tuesday, owing to an
atmospheric river which will manage to penetrate inland around the
southern end of the Sierra Nevada by that time. The best chances for
precipitation on Tuesday will be across northern and western Utah.
Given the warm airmass, snow levels and densities should remain
generally on the high side. That said, roughly half of EPS members
and more than half of the GEFS members do suggest that the column
will cool enough to enable snow down to the valley floors. However,
with models still indicating some differences in the timing and
progression of the initial cold front (notably, the NAM and CMC keep
the bulk of the precipitation hanging farther back in Nevada), have
trended the forecast for Tuesday back more towards the NBM, which is
less aggressive with the snow.

.LONG TERM (After 00Z Wednesday)...The long term period begins right
in the middle of an event. Beginning on Tuesday night and into
Wednesday morning, the strongest southwest flow will be centered
over our area. This will last throughout the day on Wednesday. The
bulk of the precipitation that will occur throughout this event is
expected to fall in this timeframe. Not only is this true because of
the strong southwest flow, but there are other factors contributing
to the enhanced amounts of QPF. These factors include: PWAT values
consistently being between 0.4" and 0.6", widespread forcing whether
it be from frontogenesis or the strong jet overhead. These
conditions will culminate in widespread precipitation across the
CWA. This precipitation is expected to begin as rain for the valleys
and snow for the mountains. Rain is expected to change over to snow
sometime Wednesday night for the valleys. The timing of this
changeover will be dependent on precipitation rates. If they are
fast enough then snow levels will drop and snow could changeover
earlier than anticipated.  In addition, there will also be gusty
southerly winds out ahead of this system impacting southern UT on
Tuesday night and then shifting to eastern UT on Wednesday. Winds on
Tuesday night have the potential to be advisory level winds whereas
the winds on Wednesday look to be sub-advisory.

Heading into Wednesday night/early Thursday morning, the axis of the
trough moves through the area and our flow aloft becomes
northwesterly. Around this same time is when the PWAT values begin
to decrease as well. Any precipitation after these values drop and
the axis moves past will primarily be terrain induced. Total QPF
from this event will be quite substantial in some locations.
Widespread 1 inch to 2 inch QPF amounts throughout most of the CWA,
excluding southeastern UT, with amounts potentially breaking 3+
inches near mountain tops. This means that substantial snow amounts
will be possible for mountainous areas. Any snow that falls in
valleys is expected to be anywhere from a trace to 2 inches, with
higher amounts on benches.

After this system moves out, weak ridging will enter the area.
Accompanying this riding will be the coldest temperatures of the
season so far. High temperatures for Thursday through Saturday are
expected to be 15 to 20 degrees below normal. For instance, the
Wasatch Front is expected to have highs in the low 30s to near 40
degrees for these days. The overnight low temperatures for Friday
morning and Saturday morning are going to be downright cold in some
locations. These low temperatures are expected to be 10 to 20
degrees below normal. For high elevation valleys, expect lows in the
single digits. For low elevations valleys, including the Wasatch
Front, expect lows in the teens to low 20s. For lower Washington
County, temperatures will be near 30 degrees and for high terrain
areas, low temperatures are expected to be between near zero and -10
degrees.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Southerly winds are expected. Mountain
obscuration will be possible throughout most of the TAF period. CIGS
are expected to be hanging around 8kft to 10kft with potential to
drop to 7kft throughout the day. There is a chance that CIGS drop
even lower as warm front pushes north between 18Z and 21Z.
Precipitation chances are possible but I would say a 40% chance at
seeing some rain showers during this period.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...The band of precipitation will
begin to dissipate throughout morning hours before another band
moves north along a warm front during the afternoon and evening
hours. The main areas impacted would be central and northern UT and
southwest WY. Lowered CIGS are possible in northern valley locations
to lower flight categories to MVFR or IFR at times. Otherwise CIGS
are expected to hang around 6kft to 10kft throughout central and
northern UT and southwest WY. Southerly winds expected. Gusty
southerly winds expected for the CWA beginning in the late
afternoon/early evening timeframe and lasting for the rest of the
TAF period.
