.SYNOPSIS...A series of storm systems will keep northern Utah
unsettled this weekend while southern Utah remains warm and dry
with gusty winds. An active pattern will continue next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Sunday)...Utah and southwest Wyoming are
under a roughly zonal flow this afternoon between a weak wave that
grazed northern Utah overnight and a second system moving onshore
along the Pacific Northwest coast. The passage of a boundary has
curbed the warming trend over northern Utah, though temperatures
remain 10-15F above seasonal normals. Over southern Utah,
temperatures have continued to rise, with maxes warming to 15-20F
above normal for this time of year, approaching record territory
in some locations.

The Pacific Northwest storm system will make its way across
northern Utah tonight into tomorrow. Disorganized as it comes
through and not accompanied by much moisture, any precipitation
associated with the system will be light and primarily confined to
the higher terrain. Of greater impact will be gusty southerly
winds ahead of the front during the day. Most guidance indicates
700 mb winds peaking at 50-55 kts over southeast Utah Saturday
afternoon, with much of that easily making it to the surface. With
high confidence in these winds being strong enough to cause travel
impacts, issued a Wind Advisory for much of Saturday for south
central and southeastern zones, including the Lake Powell area.
Passage of the associated frontal boundary through northern Utah
will also bring noticeable cooling, with maxes running around 10F
cooler than values observed today. Some cooling is also expected
over southern Utah, but should only be a few degrees or so.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z Sunday)...The extended period will be
based around a trough feature centered over the western United
States. Starting Sunday we expect mostly zonal flow aloft to slowly
turn to southwesterly and to strengthen, specifically over southern
UT as the trough begins to deepen and amplify over the west coast.
The associated low pressure system with the trough is expected to
sit over the region through much of the extended keeping the CWA
breezy, slightly cooler and driving spotty precipitation for areas
in northern and central UT as well as SW Wyoming.

The main risks for this incoming trough will be mostly for strong
southwesterly wind gusts with the strongest winds coming on Sunday
and Monday. Winds could reach and exceed advisory levels,
particularly for high terrain areas in southern UT, but southern
valleys should expect consistently breezy winds over this period as
well. Sunday and Monday are also the best chance for any
precipitation to form for northern and central UT as an enhanced
baroclinic zone moves in and provides the best dynamical forcing.
QPF values have slowly backed off over the last few days due to the
westward positioning. This will lead to moreso spotty precip chances
for not only Sunday/Monday but the entire extended. With cold air
overhead the mountains could see a few inches of accumulating snow
while the valleys see more of a mix of rain and snow with any
accumulations sticking to grassy surfaces and likely melting
relatively fast. Any afternoon showers, particularly on Sunday,
Monday and even Tuesday that develop could form weak isolated
thunderstorms as well.

While a mixing of cloudy skies will likely keep us more mild
overnight during the extended there is the potential for the
abnormally cold airmass to drive borderline freeze risk conditions
for various valleys with agricultural interests across the CWA on
Monday and Tuesday nights.

As model guidance has gained confidence on the trough's development
occurring along the Pacific west coast, confidence has lessened in
the chance for convection to form over the week with about 50/50
split at the moment. However, both deterministic and ensemble models
drive the best chance for precip on Sunday and Monday with about 70%
of members showing a wet solution. Thursday is also gaining some
confidence with 70% of members showing a good chance for precip but
also holds some uncertainty in the trough's pattern as it weakens,
which will play a big role in the possibility for convection.

.AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions will be maintained over the KSLC
terminal through the valid TAF period under increasingly cloudy
skies. Light northerly winds, with periods of variable flow, will
continue through ~03Z before returning to a southern flow. A cold
front will push into the area and bring another northerly wind switch
between 09-10Z. CIGs will drop to ~10kft AGL. There is a 30% chance
of local mountain obscuration as showers develop early tomorrow
morning.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions under
increasingly cloudy skies will prevail across much of the area
throughout the 24-hour period. A cold front will move into northern
Utah after ~05-06Z, bringing a shift to northwest winds for most
areas north of ~KPVU by 09-11Z. There is potential for strong wind
gusts over northwest Utah following the frontal passage, where gusts
as up to 35kts may be possible for KENV. Otherwise, expect CIGs to
linger around 10kft AGL, with local terrain obscuration possible
from KPVU northward from ~06Z onward as showers develop.
