.SYNOPSIS...Building high pressure into the weekend will bring hot
and dry conditions. A strong cold front will cross by late in the
weekend into early next week, with cooler temperatures and
potential for precipitation, mainly over northern Utah.
&&
.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 12Z/6am SUNDAY)...A ridge of high pressure
will continue to amplify over the Great Basin and Desert
Southwest today, with an axis centered roughly over Utah through
Saturday. 700MB temperatures will continue to climb a degree or
two Celsius each afternoon, supporting increasing high
temperatures for the entire forecast area, roughly peaking
Saturday. Current forecast highs Saturday are 10-15F above normal,
and generally within a few degrees of records. For example, the
record at SLC for 6/11 (Saturday) is 98, with the current forecast
sitting at 96. Meanwhile, at the Cedar City Airport the record is
93 and the current forecast is 94, while the St George downtown
forecast of 107 would be in the top 3 highs for the date.
Areas of particular concern for heat remain the lower elevations
of Washington County and Lake Powell through the valleys of
eastern Utah including recreation/tourist spots such as Capitol
Reef National Park and Goblin Valley State Park. The HeatRisk tool
suggests high risk for much of the population in those areas,
especially those who are heat sensitive & without effective
cooling / adequate hydration, which could certainly describe folks
hiking & recreating for the weekend. For most other valleys of
Utah, the HeatRisk tool still shows moderate risk for the same
groups.
Other than hot temperatures, expect a few cumulus buildups each
afternoon today and Saturday over the higher terrain, especially
Saturday developing near Bryce Canyon and drifting eastward,
though these will be of little to no consequence. Also, afternoon
winds will begin to increase Saturday as southwest flow aloft
increases ahead of the next trough approaching to our west.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z Sunday)...Overall, forecast remains on track
with a continued trend towards slower progression of Monday's trough
and attendant cold front into the region. As a result of the delayed
arrival of cooling in the lower levels, maximum temperatures Sunday
will offer little relief following Friday and Saturday's heat, and
as a result, heat headlines have been extended through Sunday
evening. Guidance also continues to back off of substantial
precipitation amounts for the northern mountains and the Wasatch
Front, with forecast QPF now closer to 0.1" than 0.25" for valley
locations.
The frontal boundary will push into far northwestern Utah by Sunday
evening. There exists a brief period just before sunset where modest
convection could trigger along/just ahead of the boundary and
briefly sustain, though these are unlikely to impact major
interstates or the Wasatch Front. By Monday morning, temperatures
will have fallen as much as 30-40F from Sunday's highs, with Monday
evening's max temps forecast to run 10-15F below average for this
time of year. Best chances for precipitation are in the early
morning through midday before large-scale forcing fades and
transitions to mountain showers and weak convective potential for
the northern and central valleys.
The EPS and CMCE continue present a much wetter scenario than the
GEFS, with the ensemble cluster analysis presenting a combined 65%
probability. Median values for northern valley precipitation sit
around 0.25" in this scenario, with outliers in excess of 0.75". The
GEFS counters with nearly half the membership carrying no
precipitation at all and a median value just under 0.1" along the
Wasatch Front. This is largely attributed to how each system is
currently handling the depth of the trough, the presence of a second
vort lobe moving through northern Utah Monday evening, and the
amount of water in the mid and lower atmosphere. The differences in
outcomes among the ensemble systems are well represented by their
deterministic counterparts as of the 00Z runs.
Lingering mountain showers and very limited convective potential are
expected Tuesday, with cooler temps hanging around for one more day.
Ridging is progged to return in the wake of this trough with
relatively high confidence, and will kick off a steady warming and
drying trend expected through the remainder of the week as strong
warm advection and subsidence set in. Looking out towards the
weekend and beyond, the first hints of a push of monsoonal moisture
are showing in a growing number of ensemble forecast members, but it
too early to draw conclusions just yet.

.AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions are expected to prevail throughout
the TAF period. High clouds will fade in and out throughout the day,
and winds are expected to remain light under the ridge. Typical
morning and evening wind shifts are forecast.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions are expected
for terminals across the forecast area. Generally light winds are
expected with the potential for gusty winds in the afternoon, though
wind directions should be steady, consistent with typical thermally
driven flows. Expecting high clouds to build in at times across the
northern half of the area.

.FIRE WEATHER...High pressure over the area will maintain hot and
mostly dry conditions across the area through the weekend. Winds
will strengthen from the southwest on Sunday ahead of an
approaching cold front. Widespread critical fire weather
conditions due to gusty winds and low humidity are possible across
southern Utah Sunday into Monday. Additionally, isolated critical
fire weather conditions may be possible even on Saturday.
The cold front will move into northern Utah by late Sunday
afternoon and work its way through southern Utah through Monday
evening. Gusty winds will accompany the frontal passage, with
showers and a few thunderstorms possible. Any thunderstorms could
produce additional gusty winds, lightning, and a small chance of
wetting rain, mainly across northern Utah. Much cooler
temperatures and higher humidities will settle into the area
Monday and Tuesday. Far southern districts will see the least
change, with only modest cooling and very little humidity
increase.
