.UPDATE...Updated forecast mainly for winds. Earlier, as H7 winds
turned more northerly and cold advection strengthened, winds
ramped up across much of northern Utah. Isolated gusts over 55 mph
have been reported. Earlier, added a Wind Advisory to northwest
Utah, and also extended the Wind Advisory for Castle Country
through late tonight. Castle Country is expected to see a few
hours of more favorable conditions for downslope winds with
increased H7 cold advection. Otherwise, the High Wind Warnings
for southwest Wyoming and the western Uinta Basin have been
allowed to expire as northwest flow has developed which is
typically not as favorable in those areas. Red Flag Warnings are
set to expire at 10pm, although such conditions may continue an
hour or two longer across south-central Utah.
&&
.SYNOPSIS...A strong but generally dry cold front will continue to
move southward across the state through early Friday morning, bringing
unseasonably cold temperatures along with some strong and gusty
winds and areas of critical fire weather conditions. The area will
see a steady warming trend this weekend, but conditions will
remain unsettled over northern Utah as southern Utah stays dry.
&&
.SHORT TERM...(Through 12Z/6AM Sunday)...A surface cold front
continues to march southward across northern Utah as of 3PM MDT,
currently located from northern Juab country eastward to southern
Utah county. The front has also exited southwest Wyoming. The
front is forecast to continue to propagate southward through the
night, forecast to approach the Arizona border by Friday morning.
The front is associated with an anomalously cold trough that is
in the process of deepening across the Northern Rockies and
northern Great Basin. Model consensus suggests the trough will
reach its deepest (strongest) extent by Friday evening before
heights slowly lift through the weekend, leaving a mean trough and
associated cyclonic flow behind through the weekend. Have left
inherited wind headlines in place, with two lingering areas of
concern in terms of wind. The first is across Castle Country,
where a Wind Advisory is in place through 8PM this evening. Latest
rounds of high-res guidance as well as NBM4.0/4.1 suggests winds
may linger here through the evening, so this may need to be
extended. A large difference in forecast wind gusts exists between
the NBM 4.0 and NBM 4.1, with the 4.1 deterministic suggesting
winds may gusts as high as 70 mph near canyons this evening, while
the NBM 4.0 suggest gusts will top out around 55 mph, more in
line with our current forecast. An analysis of the ensemble
spread of forecast wind gusts here suggest the most likely
scenario is in line with our latest forecast. Forecast soundings
(especially the NAM) do suggest the development of a critical
layer adjacent to the central mountains, so the higher gust
potential remains in play and will need to be monitored. Another
area where northerly post- frontal winds will need to be monitored
is across south- central Utah late tonight and Friday morning.
All Hard Freeze Watches have been upgraded to Hard Freeze Warnings
for the Bear River Valley, Wastach Back and Sanpete Valley, the
former for late tonight/Friday morning and for all of the above
areas for Friday night/Saturday morning, where a high probability
of widespread mins colder than 28F are expected. Across the
Wasatch Front, both Friday and Saturday morning will be cold, with
the forecast distribution of low temperatures ranging from the
upper 30s to the low 40s both mornings.
Precipitation associated with the passage of the frontal boundary
will be limited, with a low-end chance of light precipitation
mainly across the Uintas and adjacent valleys tonight into Friday
morning. With cold air aloft lingering across the region through
Saturday (700mb temperatures dropping to -10 or -2SD below
normal) by Friday morning, instability showers are expected to
develop across northern UT and SW Wyoming Friday afternoon and
evening, with an isolated lightning strike likely as well. These
storms will be capable of producing graupel/small hail. A renewed
round of instability-driven showers are expected Saturday
afternoon across these areas as well, although coverage will be
more limited. With snow levels anomalously low for the time of
year (around 5,500 feet) Friday afternoon/early evening, light
snow accumulations are likely across high terrain areas of
northern Utah, including the upper Cottonwood Canyons and
Parley's Canyon. A more intense convective cell may also be able
to drive snow levels down to bench level. With this activity being
largely showery and transient, accumulations will be limited to
1-3 inches in the highest terrain. Plan for wintry conditions if
planning any outdoor recreational activities.
.LONG TERM...(After 12Z/6AM Sunday)...Starting the extended period we
expect to be on the backside of the trough thats exiting the region.
This will promote westerly winds aloft as well as the potential for
a weak embedded shortwave trough to pass through northern UT and SW
Wyoming Sunday evening and into Monday. Conditions look to be mostly
dry and cooler over these days leaving precipitation to be mostly
spotty and for northern mountains seeing minimal snow
accumulations. This will also keep skies mostly cloudy and
keeping cooler conditions up north while the remainder of the CWA
begins to warm back to seasonal norms.
There is a slight chance for another weak embedded trough to move
through northern areas again on Tuesday but remains much uncertainty
among model guidance. The exact timing of the troughs full exit
from the CWA will dictate the potential for a second shortwave
bringing spotty precip again to the northern mountains but at this
point only about 20% of ensemble members point towards this
scenario. Ensemble guidance more so points to another ridge to
build into the area by Tuesday and through the week bringing much
warmer temperatures and remaining dry and calm over Utah and SW
Wyoming.

.AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions are expected through Friday at
the KSLC terminal. Winds will continue to be out of the north with
gusts over 26kt/30mph through at least 04z. Winds of this
magnitude could continue through 05-6z, but even so, the overall
trend and will be for winds to trend downward. There is a chance
for isolated showers Friday afternoon. CIGS are expected to stay
around 8kft of higher for the majority of the TAF period.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions will prevail
throughout the period for all terminals. Strong northerly/westerly
wind gusts across northern terminals and strong southwesterly winds
across southern terminals will weaken overnight into tomorrow.
Otherwise, CIGs will remain above obscuration levels with the chance
for some diurnal pop up showers across northern Utah tomorrow.

.FIRE WEATHER...Gusty winds are expected across much of the state
through this evening associated with a frontal passage. Winds are
expected to shift northerly behind the passage of the front while
winds remains out of the southwest or west ahead of it. Critical
fire weather concerns will remain in place across southern Utah
through this evening ahead of this front as a result. Cooler
temperatures and a slight recovery in RH is forecast across northern
Utah tomorrow. Tomorrow will bring breezy afternoon winds generally
out of the north to northwest. Areas across southern and eastern
Utah may see breezes exceeding 30 mph during the afternoon into the
early evening hours. Since temperatures are expected to be cooler
and these winds are not widespread across the region, at this time,
we have opted not to issue a Red Flag Warning for tomorrow.
