.SYNOPSIS...A cold front will cross northern Utah this evening
before stalling across central Utah Tuesday. Cooler air will
filter into northern Utah, while a hot and dry airmass remains
across the south. A strong cold front will cross the state
Thursday into Friday, bringing a much cooler airmass to the
region.

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Thursday)...A very warm and very dry
airmass remains in place across the forecast area this afternoon.
Temperatures have warmed into the mid 80s across most western
valleys including much of the Wasatch Front, and mid 90s around
the St George and Zion Canyon areas. This is under a mean
southwesterly flow aloft, in the wake of a mid level ridge axis
which has shifted eastward across the northern and central
Rockies. A weak shortwave trough is noted ejecting across the
interior Pacific Northwest this afternoon, and has pushed a
shallow surface boundary into far northwestern UT. Scattered high
based convection has developed along and just north of this
boundary, within an axis of higher dew points and somewhat lower
temperatures. This convection is expected to spread further south
and east through the evening, and as it does so will encounter a
much warmer and drier airmass. If these storms can maintain
themselves within this environment, and most hi-res guidance
suggests they will, strong microburst winds can be expected.
The frontal boundary is forecast to continue south and eventually
stall across central Utah Tuesday, ahead of an upstream shortwave
trough which will translate into the Great Basin late in the day.
As this wave interacts with the stalled frontal boundary,
scattered convection is expected Tuesday afternoon and evening
along this axis across central Utah. To the north of the boundary
max temperatures will cool 5-8 degrees across northern Utah, while
the south remains hot and dry.
As this wave exits the area Tuesday night, ridging will
temporarily build back into the area Wednesday. Aside from an
isolated high based storm or two over the central/southern
mountains, the airmass should dry out as temperatures warm
slightly across the north.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z/6AM Thursday)...Thursday we see the dominate
ridge pattern come to and end as a developing trough to the north
will deepen southward over the CWA. As it deepens and amplifies it
will bring an initial cold front and tight pressure packing, driving
pre frontal winds across much of the CWA as well as the potential
for convection overnight and into Friday. The movement of the trough
is expected for mostly the backside to affect the region which will
cut off the main forcing for convection by midday Friday. This
would still leave some potential for northwesterly winds to drive
orographics, as well as a quick shortwave on Sunday into Monday but
there lies much guidance uncertainty for this. Beyond this a new
riding pattern looks to move back in, bringing back seasonal like
temperatures and calmer conditions.
The main risks over the extended will be with strong prefrontal
winds as deterministics drive southwesterly flow ahead of the
sharp pressure gradient near 50-55 knot winds at 700mb. This is
shown widespread across much of the CWA on Thursday which could
mix down borderline advisory level wind gusts, mainly for high
terrain and exposed areas. This will also pose a fire weather
risk for areas in southern UT where a Fire Weather Watch is in

Sufficient moisture ahead of the frontal boundary on Thursday leaves
the potential for northern valley showers and weak thunderstorms.
The developing trough will bring much cooler air into the area that
could make for some northern mountain snow to accumulate during the
overnight hours into Friday as well as for any lingering,
orographically driven mountain showers that linger over the weekend.
A potential shortwave on Monday could drop another round of
precipitation but at this point is shown only in deterministics
while ensembles show 70% of the members dry and building back into a
ridging pattern.

.AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions will persist throughout the entire
period for the KSLC terminal. A cold front across northwestern Utah
is initiating dry thunderstorms that should remain north of the
terminal, however outflow boundaries could migrate south and create
brief erratic wind gusts. Additionally, norther/northwest winds will
likely remain throughout the period. There is a brief window between
06-12Z that winds could shift southerly, but a quick turn back to
northerly is expected.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions are expected
throughout the entire period for all terminals. Dry thunderstorms
with strong outflow winds will continue through ~06Z for far
northern and western Utah. This will likely only pose a threat for
KENV, KLGU, and KOGD. Otherwise, expect gusty diurnal winds for the
southern terminals to weaken after sunset.

.FIRE WEATHER...A hot and very dry airmass remains in place across
much of the area this afternoon, and will persist across southern
Utah through much of the week. This will continue to result in very
low daytime humidity with marginal overnight recovery across the
south. Gusty southwest winds this afternoon are resulting in
critical fire weather conditions across zone 496 this afternoon,
and this will again be the case Tuesday afternoon.
A weak cold front will cross northern Utah this evening, with high
based showers and dry thunderstorms expected along the boundary.
Strong microburst winds will be primary threat with these storms,
which should diminish by mid evening. As this front moves into
central Utah Tuesday and stalls, it will combine with a weak weather
system crossing the region to bring scattered showers and
thunderstorms to much of central Utah.
High pressure will bring a drying trend with lighter winds Wednesday,
in advance of a stronger cold front which will surge across the
region Thursday. Increasing southwest to west winds ahead of this
front, with gusts near 45 mph, will result in widespread critical
fire weather conditions across southern Utah Thursday afternoon
and evening anywhere fuels have sufficiently dried out. As such,
have issued a Fire Weather Watch for zones where fuels are
currently critical. This watch extends into Friday across zone
497, where post frontal northeast winds will remain gusty through
the day Friday. Otherwise much cooler air will spread across the
region in the wake of this front Friday.
