.SYNOPSIS...A trough crossing the West through Saturday will
bring widespread precipitation Friday into Saturday. Drier
conditions are expected early next week.
&&
.SHORT TERM (Through 12z Sunday)...Afternoon satellite and H5
analysis indicate deep layer southwesterly flow entrenched across
the eastern Great Basin region, this downstream of the next trough
of note digging southeast along the central/northern Pac coast.
Along the southern and eastern periphery of this trough deep layer
moisture off the pacific is penetrating inland, but remains
largely elevated downstream of the Sierras attm. H7 analysis
indicates a net tightening of baroclinicity across
central/northern Nevada NE across UT/ID/NV triple point, with
scattered light showers recently developing across the Raft River
range in extreme northwestern Utah. A shallow surface front
outrunning this baroclinicity has pushed across the northwest and
remains largely stalled from KENV to roughly a Tremonton line.
South of this surface front strong southerly winds have been the
name of the game today. Deep mixing in prefrontal environment has
allowed for widespread valley gusts into the 40+ mph range,
strongest across southwestern portions of the area. We can all
thank those winds for another round of lofted dust and hazy
conditions across the western valleys this afternoon. Wind
advisories for many valley areas remain in effect into this
evening, but fall off by 10pm due to anticipated decoupling
and/or gradual frontal progression across the north.
There remains good agreement in the evolution of the trough over
the next 24+ hours turning inland and becoming increasingly
negatively tilted by tomorrow morning. With this, the
aforementioned upstream baroclinicity will become more N-S
oriented across eastern Nevada with pivot point remaining near
stationary in the vicinity of the UT/NV/ID triple point. Global
model depiction of the spin up of an H5 low over northern Utah
will be the key to more rapid downstream progression of this
baroclinicity Friday, especially during the afternoon and evening
period. Precip ahead of the H5 low should be more of the showery
and/or orographic variety, but in time more robust in coverage and
intensity with and post passage of this low...especially across
the north. A solid valley rain/mountain snow event remains on tap,
with snow levels only lowering to about 6/6.5kft by nightfall
tomorrow night. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for
the northern mountains with modest late April accumulations
expected, while valleys across the north remain on tap for a good
spring soaker...needed.
The surface frontal boundary is expected to remain hung up along
the central/southern terrain through at least mid afternoon
Friday. Areas downstream of this and across portions of Castle
County and the Lake Powell region will remain within the cross
hairs of another round of strong gusty southerly winds during the
prime mixing hours late morning into the afternoon. Opted to hoist
another Wind Advisory for those areas.
Deep layer northwesterly flow and a modest moisture tap will
remain in place across the north into Saturday as the core of the
trough maintains a net negative tilt trend as it continues
downstream of the state. Precip late Friday night and through the
daylight hours is expected to become increasingly convective in
time with additional mountain accumulations remaining likely, and
a slight potential for brief mixed graupel shower down to some
valley locales that are favored in northwesterly flow. Loss of
solar and building heights Saturday night is expected to end all
precip after sunset.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z/6AM Sunday)...Starting the extended period the
longwave trough will be mostly gone from the CWA and promoting
northwest flow aloft. Precipitation will be lingering into the
extended as mountain precip from dominant orographic processes
continue with any leftover moisture. A weak shortwave trough is
expected to move through by 18z on Sunday, bringing an extra bump to
forcing over northern UT and SW Wyoming that will help drive some
extra precipitation Sunday evening into Monday morning. Temperatures
in the valleys will be warm enough to keep valley showers and trace
to slight snow accumulations in the northern mountains.
Sunday and Monday mornings will still leave the potential for a hard
freeze as the exiting trough sits as its most southern extent,
keeping a cold air mass overhead. Any agricultural interests in the
Sevier and Sanpete valleys should be aware of overnight temperatures
being of risk.
By Monday morning the trough will be totally out of the region and a
dominant ridge pattern will build in, cutting off forcing for any
lingering precipitation. Ridging will allow for warmer temperatures
and calmer weather to stick around through midweek with valley highs
in the upper 60s to low 80s and areas in SW Utah even creeping into
the low 90s.
The end of the extended has some model disagreement and uncertainty
with two different scenarios that will drive precipitation, likely
convective in nature, to the CWA. A Pacific NW trough feature is
expected to develop over the midweek and move through Utah. Model
ensembles have about 70% members agreeing on a slower and more
progressive forming trough with higher amplitude that will move
towards the CWA late Thursday and into Friday that could setup
statewide convection. However, some deterministic models and about
30% of ensemble members have a more northern grazer track for the
trough that instead will keep any precipitation or convection more
spotty and for northern UT areas.
&&
.AVIATION...KSLC...Hazy conditions this evening with temporary
restrictions in visibility. Winds should stay out of the southwest
with gusts to 30kt until the surface front comes through around 04-
06Z. Rain showers will arrive around 10-12Z. With this rain, MVFR
conditions are forecasted.
REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...These strong southwesterly
winds are expected to continue through the day before switching to
the northwest as early as 23Z in northwest Utah. Northwesterly flow
will expand from northwest to southeast. Wind shear will take place
later this evening around 03Z to 08Z for much of central Utah and
southwest Wyoming. Following the wind shift, precipitation chances
will begin in northwest Utah between 06Z and 08Z. Precipitation will
fill in as we head towards mid-morning. MVFR conditions are possible
with some of these storms.
