.SYNOPSIS...A dry and mild airmass will reside across the area
Wednesday. A strong cold front will cross the state Thursday into
Friday, bringing a much cooler airmass to the region.
&&
.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Friday)...Morning satellite and upper
analysis indicates a rather pronounced shortwave trough with
associated upper level diffluence near the British Columbia
coast. Meanwhile, a weak shortwave trough is apparent on water
vapor imagery near the southern California coast.
The previously mentioned robust shortwave trough will dig into
the PACNW and usher in a longwave trough across the West through
the short term forecast period. The associated cold front...quite
cold for this time of year...will shift into northwest Utah early
Thursday morning. By Thursday afternoon, the front will likely be
stretch northern Utah, gradually shifting southward with time.
Meanwhile, a tight thermal gradient combined with strong mid-level
flow will bring the threat of very strong winds to portions of the
area, particularly Uinta County, WY and the western Uinta Basin.
Available guidance indicates a greater than 50% chance of wind
gusts meeting or exceeding 50kts, particularly from roughly
18-01Z. Given the combination of downslope component, strong mid-
level flow in a well mixed environment and a strong thermal
gradient, expect wind gusts in excess of 58 mph will be observed.
Given run to run consistency has been somewhat marginal in regard
to this threat and the 00Z runs were late and/or missing for a
bulk of the guidance due to a data outage, issued a high wind
watch for these locations to allow one more full run of the model
suite. Think areas such as northern Utah County and
western/southern valleys may approach wind advisory criteria
Thursday afternoon and evening but held off on any additional wind
products for now.
Available moisture with this trough given the somewhat continental
origin is limited. Expect a passing threat of a few showers across
mainly northern Utah Thursday afternoon into early Friday morning.
Given 700me temperatures near -7C, pockets of light snow
accumulations are possible, particularly above 6500 feet or so.
Those with outdoor plans Thursday night into Friday should be
prepared for winter conditions and unseasonably cold temperatures.
Sub-freezing lows Friday morning are expected for the Cache
Valley and potentially northern Wasatch Front, roughly north of
Brigham City. Those with gardens and exposed pipes may need to
protect these resources due to the cold.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z Friday)...With the H5 trough axis shifting
to the east, the coldest air at the base of the trough will settle
in overhead. Models continue to indicate H7 temps across the
northern portion of the forecast area bottoming out around -8C,
translating to highs around 60 for the northern 2/3rds of the
forecast area. Far southern Utah will be largely isolated from the
coldest air, especially given warming on downslope flow that will
soften the blow from the cold front, especially in lower
Washington County and across Kane County where highs are still
expected to crest 80F.
Trailing the longwave trough axis, a shortwave with strong
positive tilt will push into northern and perhaps as far as
central Utah Friday afternoon. With this feature, expecting light
mountain snow showers with accumulating snow across the high
Uintas and north slope into Uinta County, WY. While moisture will
be lacking, the setup is dynamically potent enough for a brief
period in the late afternoon that the northeastern quarter of the
forecast area could see weak thunderstorms develop, with the
potential to produce gusty winds in their vicinity. This threat is
largely over by late evening with the loss of surface heating and
developing large scale subsidence.
Consensus is for a gradual warming and drying trend through the
weekend, though the slow to progress longwave trough will leave
the door open for another grazing shortwave to rotate through by
Sunday night. Models have come into better agreement that this
next shortwave will clip the northern third of the forecast area
overnight into Monday morning, but the chance of producing any
sensible weather is currently slim to none. By Monday afternoon,
the longwave trough will finally translate east as ridging builds
in over the Great Basin. Ensembles continue to insinuate the
potential for more active weather Tuesday-Wednesday with a weak
trough developing in roughly half the solutions, but recent
deterministic runs all favor continued ridging. Thus, forecast
uncertainty beyond Monday evening remains exceptionally high at
this time.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Quiet weather and VFR conditions are expected
for Wednesday. Light winds varying in direction from southwest
through southeast will continue until gradient-driven northwest
flow picks up in speed by 18Z. A return to southeasterly flow is
expected Wednesday night.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...High pressure will deliver
nearly cloud-free skies and light winds for much of the forecast
area Wednesday. Winds will pick up area-wide beginning Thursday
morning ahead of the next storm system.

.FIRE WEATHER...Another day of hot and dry conditions can be
expected across southern Utah ahead of a strong cold front poised
to cross the region Thursday into Friday. A few dry thunderstorms
are possible across the southern mountains this afternoon and
evening. Widespread critical fire weather conditions ahead of the
previously mentioned strong cold front are expected across
southern Utah where fuels are critical Thursday afternoon and
evening. These conditions may continue into portions of Friday
across the Mohave Desert and Grand Staircase areas.
A much cooler airmass will build into the region behind the cold
front Saturday with gradual warming Sunday into early next week.
