Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Shreveport LA 722 PM CDT Tue Apr 19 2022 .AVIATION... VFR conditions will prevail across the terminals tonight as high pressure shifts east of the area. A low pressure system pushing across the Central Plains will lift a warm front into the area early on Wednesday. This will make showers and thunderstorms possible at Texarkana, El Dorado, Tyler, and Longview during the pre-dawn hours (after 08z). Showers will be possible by dawn for Shreveport and by mid-morning for Lufkin and Monroe. Ceilings will drop to MVFR by dawn Tyler, Longview, Texarkana, Lufkin, and Shreveport and remain possible with showers through Wednesday evening. Southeasterly winds at around 10kts tonight will shift to southerly and increase to 15-20kts on Wednesday with gusts to 20-25kts. /04-Woodrum/ && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 223 PM CDT Tue Apr 19 2022/ SHORT TERM.../This afternoon through Wednesday/ Low level warm/moist advection will continue across the region this afternoon as surface high pressure builds towards the East Coast and surface low pressure deepens across the Central High Plains. Other than some high clouds associated with an approaching shortwave, this afternoon will be mostly sunny and warm with highs mainly in the 70s. Low level moisture will surge northward tonight with the development of a 40 knot low level jet. Low clouds will increase from south to north, reaching East Texas and western Louisiana overnight. The increasing moisture and lift associated with the passing shortwave will result in a chance for showers and thunderstorms with the best chances around the Arklatex. Rainfall amounts will be light (generally less than 0.25 inch) across East Texas and Louisiana but southern Arkansas may see amounts between 0.25 and 0.50 inch. Precipitation will end from west to east Wednesday afternoon/evening with the passing shortwave. Severe storms are not expected but a few strong storms with small hail and gusty winds are possible. Lows tonight will be mild, ranging from the lower 50s across southern Arkansas to the lower 60s across East Texas. Highs Wednesday will be warm, ranging from the mid 70s to the lower 80s. It will also be breezy Wednesday with a south wind between 10 and 20 mph along with some higher gusts. Wind speeds will likely remain below Wind Advisory Criteria but it will be close, especially across the western half of the forecast area. && LONG TERM.../Wednesday night through Tuesday/ The shortwave that will bring rain/storms to parts of the region overnight/Wednesday will move quickly east Wednesday night. Moist air will remain in place in the low levels of the atmosphere resulting in a mostly cloudy and warm night with lows mainly in the 60s. Wind speeds should stay strong enough to prevent areas of dense fog from forming but would not be surprised to see patchy fog overnight/Thursday morning. Brief ridging aloft and some partial clearing Thursday afternoon will allow temperature to warm into the 80s with lows only falling into the 60s Thursday night. The upper ridge axis will pass to the east Friday ahead of a deep trough approaching from the Desert Southwest. Strong low level warm air advection will continue ahead of this system keeping the region warm, humid and breezy through Saturday. Large scale lift will slowly increase from west to east Saturday night/Sunday resulting in a slight chance of showers and storms, mainly across northeast Texas and the Arklatex. The better storm chances will arrive Sunday night and Monday when the upper trough and associated cold front pass through the region. This is a dynamic system and it should have plenty of moisture and shear to support some strong (possibly severe) storms.
