.SYNOPSIS...
Santa Ana winds will decrease today under bright sunshine.
Winds will become onshore and strengthen on Wednesday. This will
spread cooling into the coast and valleys with strong gusty west
winds in the mountains. A storm system will graze the area on
Thursday, bringing rain showers and mountain snow showers
Wednesday night through Thursday along with gusty north winds.
Warming will occur Friday through the weekend as upper ridging
builds in from the west. A dry and warm weather pattern is
favored through next week.

Update:

Bright sunshine prevails across Southern California this morning.
Santa Ana winds continue, but are less than they were this time
yesterday with peak gusts around 40 mph in the most wind-prone
canyon locales. Wind gusts over the Inland Empire below the Cajon
Pass are mostly 20-25 mph this morning. Winds will relax this
afternoon under tranquil conditions. No changes were made to the
forecast this morning. See previous discussion below for more
forecast details.

Previous Discussion (Issued at 343 AM PST Tue Mar 8 2022):

.SHORT TERM (Today through Thursday night)...
The northerly offshore flow of Monday has become northeasterly.
Outside of Toro Peak at 8500 feet in the Riverside County
mountains, the stronger gusts are mostly 40 mph or less. The winds
will diminish through the morning into the early afternoon.
Warming will continue today with high temperatures for the coast
into the western valleys a few degrees above average and for the
mountains and deserts a few degrees below average.

On Wednesday, onshore flow will strengthen in advance of a low
pressure system moving southward through the Pacific Northwest and
into the Great Basin Wednesday night. West winds will develop and
strengthen across the mountains and deserts for Wednesday
afternoon into early Thursday. The stronger winds from the ridge
tops onto the desert slopes of the mountains will gust to 50 to 55
mph.

That low pressure system from the north will bring a chance of
showers for late Wednesday night and Thursday with the greatest
chances for the mountains. Moisture is limited and amounts should
be light, mostly one-quarter inch or less for the mountains and
less than one-tenth inch at lower elevations. A snow level around
6000 feet will lower to around 5500 feet Thursday afternoon.

There continues to be spread in the guidance across the southwest
states for Wednesday night and Thursday with that system. The GFS
ensemble system is more inland which would be dry with less wind.
The ECMWF ensemble system is just far enough west to entrain some
moisture with the chance for showers. The ECMWF ensemble system
is stronger with the west winds ahead of this system and the
north winds behind it.

The winds will become northerly Thursday afternoon with stronger
north winds for late Thursday afternoon through Thursday night.
The mean of ensemble members of the ECMWF for Ontario would
support moderate strength winds. However, the range is from weaker
winds to a handful of ensemble members with strong winds.

Onshore flow will spread cooling into the coast and valleys on
Wednesday with the deserts around 5 degrees warmer. Cooling will
spread inland on Thursday with the greatest cooling across the
high desert into the mountains.

.LONG TERM (Friday through Monday)...
The persistent highly amplified flow in the vicinity of the West
Coast will finally deamplify across the eastern Pacific into the
western states. High pressure aloft will move inland along the
West Coast for Friday into Saturday This will be followed by a
weak trough of low pressure moving inland to the north on late
Saturday with weak high pressure aloft for Sunday.

High temperatures will warm for Friday and Saturday with Sunday a
little cooler. Then a little warmer on Monday. The spread in high
temperature guidance of Sunday and Monday is greatest for the
valleys and coast with differences from the strength of the
onshore flow. For Saturday through Monday, high temperatures will
be near to around 10 degrees above average, varying by day and
location.

.AVIATION...
081650Z...Mostly clear skies through this evening. Isolated low
clouds/fog possible after 09z Wed with bases near 800 FT MSL, though
confidence is low in impacts to coastal TAF sites. Locally gusts E-
NE winds with gusts 15-25 kt possible through 20z Wed before
diminishing. LLWS and mod up/downdrafts possible over/west of mtns.

.MARINE...
No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Wednesday.
Breezy west to northwest winds will develop late Wednesday afternoon
and continue into Thursday evening with wind gusts 25-30 kt before
turning to the northeast Thursday night. Breezy winds will continue
into Friday morning. This would produce winds and choppy seas
hazardous for small craft. No additional hazardous marine conditions
are expected Friday afternoon through Saturday.
