.SYNOPSIS...
Partly cloudy and cool today ahead of short-wave trough dropping
south along the West Coast. Moderate to locally strong Santa Ana
winds develop tonight behind the trough, peaking Wednesday. Much
colder Wednesday, especially in the mountains and deserts. Weaker
Santa Ana winds will prevail Thursday and Friday. A brief break
in the wind is expected on Saturday before another Santa Ana
winds develops for Sunday and Monday.

Low clouds west of the mountains are beginning to erode this
morning. Scattered high clouds continue to move west across So Cal
ahead of a short wave trough currently dropping south along the
West Coast. This trough will help deepen the marine layer tonight
with more widespread low clouds later this evening. There may even
be enough dynamics to squeeze out some drizzle. Hi-res guidance
isn't showing any accumulating precipitation, but most ECE members
have trace amounts. Put in some patchy drizzle for San Diego
County. Sadly it's the best chance of precipitation we'll have in
the next week (or more). Otherwise cool today with high
temperatures several degrees below normal. Wednesday will be much
cooler, especially in the mountains and deserts, as cold air moves
in from the north.
The short wave trough and attendant vort max will move south
across the region tonight into Wednesday. Surface pressure
gradients will quickly turn offshore tonight and strengthen as
high pressure builds behind this system in the northern Great
Basin. There is some upper level support with northerly winds of
around 15-20 kt at 850 mb and 30 kt at 700 mb. These winds are
even stronger to the east of our forecast area, where the ECMWF
EFI has a max of 1 and a shift-of-tails of 1 over the lower
Colorado River Valley! Values are lower here, generally between
0.6 and 0.8, signifying an unusual but not an extreme event.
Local WRF as well as the CANSAC WRF are showing mountain waves
developing downwind of the San Bernardino Mountains into the
Inland Empire. These surfacing waves are capable of producing
stronger, potentially damaging winds outside of the normal windy
areas. Strong downsloping winds are likely across the coastal
slopes and foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains as well.
Previous forecast of gusts 40-55 mph will likely need to be
adjusted upwards, mainly for the San Bernardino Mountains, Inland
Empire and Santa Ana Mountains. Would not be surprised to see
isolated gusts of 70 mph or more on Wednesday. Winds begin to
weaken Wednesday night into Thursday, becoming more confined to
the wind prone areas as upper support and surface gradients
weaken. A second short wave dropping south through the interior
west will provide a boost on Friday, especially across the San
Diego County mountains and foothills as offshore gradients to the
east peak. WPC Cluster Analysis shows some spread in the track of
this next wave, which would affect just how strong the winds are
here, so confidence is lower for this portion of the event.
A brief break in the winds occurs on Saturday. Another short wave
dropping south inland will bring another round of Santa Ana Winds
on Sunday and Monday, weakening Tuesday. Gradual warming through
Friday with little change Saturday as heights slowly rise. The
ridge builds in to the north with weak east-west troughing
lingering across So Cal early next week, which could limit warming
from the next round of offshore flow.

.AVIATION...
011630Z...Areas of low clouds in coastal areas and some inland
valley locations will continue through this afternoon with bases
2000-3500 feet MSL. BKN high clouds AOA 15000 feet MSL will continue
to stream across all of the region today, with all clouds clearing
tonight. VIS remains reduced due to some mist and haze in coastal
areas and valley locations but will slowly clear out later this
morning. There is a chance for some patchy drizzle/mist and reduced
VIS later this evening as the marine layer deepens, but confidence
in occurrence at any of the TAF sites remains low. Coastal areas
would be the most likely to see any drizzle/mist and reduced VIS.
Strong northeast winds will begin after 06Z tonight below the Cajon
Pass, strengthening and becoming more widespread Wednesday. LLWS as
well as MOD-STG up/downdrafts can be expected west and south of
mountains tonight and early Wednesday morning. Some stronger winds
will begin to surface after sunrise on Wednesday mainly across the
coastal slopes and foothills as well as below mountain passes. Gusts
approaching 40-50 kt could occur near ONT, SBD, and RAL as northeast
winds increase later Wednesday morning.

Wind gusts exceeding 25 knots are possible starting Wednesday
morning and lasting through the early evening, which could lead to
hazardous conditions for small craft. Otherwise, no hazardous marine
conditions are expected through Saturday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Santa Ana winds develop this evening and quickly strengthen early
Wednesday morning. The strongest winds will occur across the
mountains and coastal slopes in San Bernardino County and Orange
County and locally into the Inland Empire, peaking on Wednesday.
North to northeast wind gusts up to 55 mph are expected with
isolated gusts of 70 mph or more near the foothills of the San
Bernardino Mountains, below the Cajon Pass, and in the Santa Ana
Mountains. Winds will be considerably weaker across San Diego
County. Winds slowly weaken during the day Thu, but may
strengthen again and turn more easterly on Friday. Minimum
relative humidity values may fall to 10-15% Wednesday through
Friday. Winds will briefly turn back onshore on Saturday before
Santa Ana winds redevelop for Sunday and Monday.
