The associated surface low and cold front will bring a surge of
bitterly cold arctic air along with increasing potential for
accumulating snow, likely resulting in hazardous travel
conditions.

Dangerously Cold Wind Chills: Confidence remains high that very
cold temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills will cut into
our area Thursday morning and persist into the holiday weekend.
The ECMWF EFI and Shift of Tails tool shows a very strong signal
for both anomalously cold temperatures and gusty winds. The trend
in the model guidance has been to bring the cold front into our
area earlier than previous runs, with the cold front reaching our
northwestern CWA by early Thursday morning. On Thursday,
temperatures will be their warmest at midnight and rapidly drop
with the passage of the cold front. Temperatures may drop by more
than 30 degrees in a matter of hours behind the front and fall
below 0F areawide by Thursday evening. As the surface lows makes
its way through the area, the pressure gradient will tighten and
winds will become increasingly gusty. NBM 4.1 probabilities
suggest that widespread wind gusts of 40-45 mph are likely, and
potentially reaching 50 mph at times. These cold temperatures in
combination with strong gusty winds will result in wind chill
values dropping near -30F Thursday night. For reference, the last time
wind chills dropped below -30F at Springfield was in 1989.
Frostbite will occur in 15 minutes or less in these conditions.
Given the strong winds, sporadic power outages are possible. Take
necessary precautions ahead of time, particularly if you are
planning on being out on the road. These dangerously cold wind
chills are expected to persist into Saturday morning. Given the
high confidence in these parameters, the Wind Chill Watch has been
upgraded to a Wind Chill Warning. Temperatures thereafter will slowly
begin to warm and regulate to more normal conditions.

Accumulating Snowfall Potential: As we get closer to the onset of
the event, details regarding snowfall amounts and timing are
beginning to become clearer, though uncertainties still remain.
The latest model guidance shows decreasing probabilities for snow
totals greater than 4 inches for our CWA compared to earlier
runs. Hi-res models are indicating a band of snow and potentially
a wintry mix right along the front, followed by stratiform snow
behind it. There may be a brief (around 1 hour) window for liquid
precipitation along the front, however confidence is low at this
time. If enough rain falls to wet the roads before evaporating due
to the gusty winds, there could be the potential for a flash
freeze thanks to the rapid drop in temperatures behind the front.
This would make for slick roads during your commute. The other
factor to consider is the blowing snow potential. Entrainment of
colder and drier air may increase snow-to-liquid ratios,
resulting in lighter, fluffier snow. With the gusty winds, blowing
snow could reduce visibilities to blizzard-like conditions at
times. We will continue to monitor this aspect as we get a better
handle on the expected thermal profile. The Winter Storm Watch has
been expanded farther southward due to increasing confidence in
snowfall totals, generally including counties along and north of
the Highway 60 corridor and runs from Thursday morning into
Thursday night.

A low stratus deck is over portions of the area this morning with
IFR conditions occurring under the stratus deck. This conditions
will persist overnight and the lower ceilings will expand some
across the area. Ceilings will improve by Wednesday afternoon.
Winds will be light overnight as the high moves to the east just
north the area. Winds will pick up slightly out of the southeast
Wednesday as the area of high pressure moves off to the east.
