Quiet and dry weather prevail through Tuesday and Wednesday ahead
of a major Winter system. Daily highs in the 30s to lower 40s
areawide. A mix of sun and clouds expected on Tuesday before
increasing cloud cover on Wednesday. Overnight lows tonight fall
into the 20s.
By Wednesday, an upper-level trough begins to dig south into the
Northern Plains and will set the stage for accumulating snowfall
and dangerous cold late week.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Monday)

A strong upper-level trough quickly digs south into the central
CONUS on Thursday. A dynamic system characterized by a 160 knot
upper-level jet will provide ample lift as the left exit region
sets up over the Middle Mississippi Valley. A noteworthy change
with this system over the last 24 to 36 hours is the slight trend
towards a more progressive low pressure system. Nonetheless,
forecast QPF amounts of 0.10 to 0.30 will support accumulating
snowfall in conjunction with rapidly dropping temperatures.
Accumulating Snowfall: At 48 hours from the onset of this event,
ensemble guidance is beginning to come into better agreement.
Though it should be noted, there are a few remaining
uncertainties including timing and location of the developing low.
Confidence in accumulating snowfall and travel impacts remains
highest along and north of the Interstate 44 corridor.
From a probabilistic standpoint, the guidance continues to
support accumulating snowfall across much of the area and remains
rather unchanged from the previous forecast shift.
NBM 4.1 24 hour Snowfall Probabilities Thursday into Friday:
> 2 inches = 60 to 80%
> 4 inches = 30 to 50%
> 6 inches = 0 to 10%
In general,a first look at potential snowfall accumulation ranges
(25th to 75th percentiles) are 1 to 4 inches north of the
Interstate 44 corridor. Additional contributing factors to snowfall
totals include the timing and intensity of the snowfall. SLRs are
forecast to range from 12:1 to 18:1. Forecast soundings are
favorable for saturation through the dendritic growth zone.
The highest confidence in impactful accumulating snowfall remains
across portions of east central Kansas into west central and
central Missouri. This area is highlighted by a Winter Storm
Watch. Areas outside of the Winter Storm Watch should remain on
high alert as travel impacts could be realized as far south as
southern Missouri. Key factors contributing to potential travel
impacts include timing, rapid drop in temperatures, and blowing
snow. With regards to timing, an increase flux of travel can be
expected on area highways ahead of the Holiday weekend. As for the
rapid drop of temperature, there exists the potential for flash
freeze on area roadways as a brief window of rain is possible at
the onset of the precipitation. As temperatures rapidly drop
through Thursday morning/early afternoon, any wet roadways could
be subject to flash freeze, especially elevated or untreated
roadways. The third noteworthy factor that will result in travel
impacts is blowing snow (Blizzard-like conditions) and reduced
visibilities in the wake of very gusty winds (30 to 45 mph).
Blowing snowfall confidence of this magnitude is fairly uncommon
for portions of our area. A quick assessment of blowing snow shows
70 to 80% probabilities for intermittent periods of whiteout
conditions. Snowfall rates could further escalate travel impacts,
with model inconsistencies remaining on the expected rates.
Overall, the snowfall amounts should not overshadow the magnitude
of potential impacts. The Winter Storm Severity Index (WSSI)
highlights minor to moderate impacts along and north of
Interstate 44. This is the time to prepare. Further Winter
headlines will be likely in subsequent forecasts.
Dangerous Cold: In addition to accumulating snowfall and potential
travel impacts, dangerous cold will accompany this system. From a
historical perspective, a few records are not out of the cards.
The ECMWF EFI and Shift of Tails continues to support the
anomalously cold temperatures. Confidence is high in the
potential for Wind Chill headlines. A Wind Chill Watch is in
effect for entire area at this time. NBM 4.1 guidance depicts
probabilities of wind gusts greater 40 knots around 60 to 70%.
Confidence is increasing in wind gusts of 50 mph or higher. High
temperatures on Thursday likely occur in the early AM, with a
rapid drop by late Thursday morning into the afternoon along the
frontal passage. A combination of temperatures in the single
digits by the late afternoon and gusty winds will feature wind
chills of -20 to -30 degrees. Frostbite could occur in 15 minutes
or less in these conditions. This continues to pose a high threat
to vulnerable populations such as those without sufficient
shelter or warming. In addition to dangerous wind chills, power
outages cannot be ruled out as winds gust to 50 mph or higher.
Overnight lows Thursday night into Friday morning fall below zero
with lows ranging from -5 to -10. The bitter cold continues into
the Holiday weekend. Friday features highs in the single digits
across much of the area with overnight lows around zero or below
zero once again. Dangerous wind chills continue through Saturday.
The area looks to remain below freezing through Christmas Day.
B early next week, temperatures slowly begin to rebound above
freezing. A return of near normal to slightly above normal
temperatures as 2022 comes to an end.

ceilings this afternoon into tonight. While there is some
