Key Messages:

1. Brief, isolated strong to severe storms are possible within a
narrow band of storms over far central Missouri and the eastern
Missouri Ozarks through 4 PM this afternoon.

2. Periods of showers and some storms will continue through
Thursday night. Isolated minor flooding risk will be possible,
mainly for low water crossings and a few of the elevated
creeks/rivers across the area.

3. Near to slightly above normal temperatures and dry weather
expected for the holiday weekend into early next week.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday)

Satellite water vapor imagery early this afternoon highlights an
upper-level cut-off low over the central Oklahoma/Kansas border
with a dry slot spreading into far southwestern Missouri. At the
surface, low pressure located over west-central Missouri was
propagating northward with a cold front extending south down
through Versailles-Lebanon-Ava. A narrow band of showers along
the front will continue moving northward through the afternoon,
bringing very brief heavy rain and some locally gusty winds.

Areas east of the front--primarily over the eastern Ozarks--have
seen some modest instability develop early this afternoon
(500-1000 MUCAPE, only up to around 500 SBCAPE). Given 30-40 knot
0-6 bulk shear this afternoon, can't rule out a few isolated
strong storms with small hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph through
around 4 pm, but Hi-res ensemble guidance (HREF/WoFS)
probabilities for any severe wind and hail are almost nil (less
than 10% probability). Could see some quick rain accumulations up
to around 1 inch over Dent/Shannon/Oregon Counties through the
next 3 hours, with localized minor flooding at susceptible low
water crossings and streams in response to this rainfall, but
widespread flooding is not expected.

After the severe threat ends around 4 PM, the aforementioned dry
slot will limit shower/storm coverage for the remainder of the
afternoon and evening to widely scattered across the area. Many
areas will receive little, if any rainfall for the remainder of
the afternoon and evening.

Hi-res guidance is also in very good agreement on the upper-low
becoming completely vertically stacked tonight near the
Kansas/Missouri border and slowly sliding east across southern
Missouri throughout Thursday. As a result, expect thick clouds
with continued showers and isolated embedded storms over most of
the area tomorrow, with rain ending from west to east across the
area on Thursday night as the stacked low exits our area to the
east. No severe weather is expected on Thursday. High
temperatures will be 15-20 degrees below normal on Thursday given
the rain and clouds, with highs topping out around 60-65 degrees.

Generally expect additional rainfall accumulations for the
remainder of today through Thursday night to be less than an inch
for most of the area given lighter rainfall rates, with the
exception of Dent/Shannon/Oregon counties where the ongoing
heavier convection will persist for the next few hours. Therefore,
while the flooding threat is low, a few susceptible low water
crossings and already elevated streams/rivers could see some
localized flooding this evening into Thursday.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

The main story for most of the extended period will be
temperatures warming back above average into the 80s and dry
weather returning from this holiday weekend into at least the
early/middle portion of next week.

Friday-Tuesday: WPC Cluster Analysis and ensemble model consensus
is in good agreement on an upper-level ridge moving across the
region on Friday into Saturday and then settling over the eastern
CONUS through at least Tuesday. This will result in decreasing
cloud cover throughout the day on Friday and substantial warming
trend from Friday into Sunday. NBM high temperature ranges are
very narrow, so confidence is high on high temps in the mid to
upper 80s returning for Sunday through at least Tuesday of next
week. While guidance is in good agreement on an amplified upper-
level trough developing over the western CONUS on Sunday into
early next week, the upper-level energy remains to our west so we
will be kept rain-free through at least Tuesday.

Wednesday-late next week: While ensemble guidance is in decent
agreement on a breakdown of the upper-level ridge to our east and
movement of the western CONUS trough into the upper plains, WPC
Cluster Analysis highlights uncertainty as to when this pattern
change takes place. Some guidance suggests a weak cold front with
additional rain chances moving into the northwestern half of our CWA
as early as late Wednesday, so have kept the low-end
precipitation chances (20-30%) highlighted in the NBM guidance. It
is also possible that these showers/storms along the front hold
off until late next week (Thursday-Saturday). Nonetheless, expect
some sort of precipitation chances to return by late next week
with a slight cooldown in temperatures relative to what we will
see early next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon)

The cold front has already pushed through the TAF sites, so only
some light, widely scattered showers are expected for the
remainder of today and evening. The upper low will slowly move
eastwards over the area through Thursday night, so additional
light rain showers and perhaps a few embedded storms will linger
over the area at times from late tonight through Thursday night.

Should see a brief period of VFR ceilings at KSGF and perhaps KBBG
from mid afternoon into mid evening, before more MVFR to IFR
ceilings return late tonight through the end of the TAF period.
