Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Seattle WA
407 AM PST Tue Jan 4 2022
.SYNOPSIS...Upper level trough moving through the area this
morning. System moving into Oregon later today keeping showers
in the forecast. Snow levels remaining low. Warm front moving up
from the southwest Wednesday night with snow levels increasing
rapidly except in the Northwest Interior and Cascade foothills.
Warm front stalling over Western Washington Thursday. Trailing
cold front arrives Friday. Possible drying trend over the weekend
with upper level ridge trying to build over area.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...Satellite imagery shows
upper level trough moving into Western Washington early this
morning. Plenty of shower activity with the trough. Temperatures
at 3 am/11z were in the 30s and lower 40s with very few locations
at or below freezing.
Upper level trough moving through the area this morning. Low snow
levels still in place keeping the heavier showers driving the snow
level briefly down to the surface scenario this morning. Even if
the showers are heavy enough to produce snow expect any
accumulations to be an inch or less for the lowlands. Snow
continuing in the Cascades with a good push of westerlies behind
the trough keeping snow going in the Cascades all day. Have issued
a Winter Weather Advisory for the Cascades for today and tonight.
System moving into Oregon later this afternoon with Western
Washington close enough to keep showers in the forecast.
Temperatures warming slightly this afternoon with highs near 40.
This will decrease the chances for the heavier showers to produce
snow at the surface. Air mass will be somewhat unstable today with
decent lapse rates along the coast so have stayed with the chance
of thunderstorms from about the Olympics westward.
Front over Oregon moving east tonight with drier northwesterly
flow aloft over Western Washington. Precipitation chances
decreasing overnight for the lowlands. Flow aloft decreasing as
well which will result in decreasing snow rates in the Cascades
after midnight. Will end the Winter Weather Advisory for the
Cascades at 6 am Wednesday. In general new snow accumulation
between now and 6 am Wednesday for the Cascades in the 6 to 15
inch range with the higher amounts in the Central and Southern
Cascades.
Rapidly developing warm front still southwest of the area by
Wednesday afternoon with precipitation out ahead of the front
spreading over most of the area by late Wednesday afternoon. With
the front arriving from the south this will make the the
Bellingham to Williams Lake gradient more negative with Fraser
River outflow winds increasing over Whatcom and San Juan county
during the day. Easterly gradients also increasing in the Cascade
foothills. Both of these situations will cool the lower levels of
the air mass down in these locations. Highs Wednesday only near
40, with cooler highs over the Northwest Interior and cascade
foothills.
Winter storm watch will be issued for Whatcom and San Juan county
as well as the Cascade foothills for Wednesday night with this
forecast package. The increasing northeast or easterly winds
keeping temperatures below freezing combined with the warm moist
air mass moving over the top has the potential for produce
significant snow ( 4 to 8 inches ) in these locations. Warmer air
arriving first in Cascades foothills could make the cold air layer
shallow enough where the precipitation is in the form of freezing
rain. Winter storm watch also issued for the Cascades for the
potential of 1 to 2 feet of snow Wednesday night and Thursday
before the warmer air lifts the snow levels well above the passes
later Thursday. Easterly gradients in the passes Thursday could
prolong the snow even with the higher snow levels or create a
freezing rain situation in the passes as well with a shallow layer
of cold air at pass levels.
Warm front stalling over the area Thursday with a big warm up.
Highs temperatures in some locations will be near 50 degrees, the
warmest day in two weeks. Fraser river outflow winds coming to an
end and a weakening of the easterly gradients through the passes
should allow both the Northwest Interior and the Cascade foothills
to warm up as well with the winter storm watches confined only to
the Cascades Thursday. The quick warm up combined with moderate
to heavy rain could result in the river flooding problems late in
the week. See hydro section for details.
.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...Models have been consistent
the last few runs with trailing cold front moving through Western
Washington Friday. Snow levels above the passes ahead of the
front. Operational model runs building a ridge over the area for
the weekend with pretty dry solutions. Ensembles not as
enthusiastic about the ridge yet with plenty of solutions showing
a weaker ridge and a warm front moving through Saturday and
another front approaching Monday. Will keep chance pops in most of
the Saturday through Monday time frame. Snow levels at this point
look to be well above the surface making the precipitation type
rain for the lowlands. Felton

.AVIATION...Scattered showers continue to spread across the region at this hour,
intermittently affecting terminals. Expect CIGs and vsbys to be
reduced under any showers. Heavier showers may mix in some snow -
however, accumulations are not expected at any terminals. Outside of
showers, MVFR CIGs will prevail through much of the period, with
CIGs generally ranging from 1000 to 2500 feet. Southerly winds can
be expected at all TAF sites through the period AOB 10 kts.
KSEA...
Scattered showers will affect the terminal at times through today,
briefly affecting CIGs and vsbys at times. Snow may mix into the
rain under any heavier showers, however, accumulations are not
expected. Outside of showers, MVFR CIGs will prevail through the
period, with CIGs ranging from 1500 to 3000 ft through the period.
Southeasterly winds will prevail through the period AOB 10 kts.

&&
.MARINE...Winds will remain elevated across area waters
today, gradually decreasing through the day. Seas will remain
hazardous over the Coastal Waters and West Entrance of the Strait,
generally 13 to 15 ft and 10 to 11 ft, respectively. Both winds
and seas will subside later tonight into Wednesday. Expect
intermittent rain and snow showers today, affecting visibility at
times. Coastal flooding also remains a concern for shorelines
along the interior waters today, with minor tidal overflow
possible.
Winds will increase again Wednesday across all area waters with the
approach of the next system. Another system will affect area waters
by the end of the week. Seas will rise above 10 feet once again by
Thursday.
Pullin
&&
.HYDROLOGY...Transition to warmer, wetter pattern beginning
Thursday could result in high rivers flows, especially for the
southern Olympic Peninsula and southwestern Washington Friday into
the weekend. Moderate to heavy rain, combined with melting of
lowland snow could produce some river flooding. The rivers most
likely to have a chance of flooding late in the week are the
Skokomish, Chehalis, Skookumchuck and Newaukum Rivers and perhaps
Issaquah Creek. How much low level snow remains by the time the
heavier rain begins Wednesday night will play a significant role
into how high the rivers crest and any flooding that might occur.
