What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Blacksburg, VA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm warning went out at Jan 14, 6:17 PM EST, 2 hours 11 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jan 14, 6:17 PM EST, 2 hours 11 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Blacksburg VA
617 PM EST Fri Jan 14 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build southward across the Mid Atlantic
region tonight. Confidence is increasing for a winter storm
ti impact all areas Sunday into Monday as a deep low pressure
system passes across the region. High pressure will return in
the wake of the departing storm early next week, ushering in dry
but cold weather again.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 603 PM EST Friday...

Westerly/northwest flow will keep upslope clouds over the
mountains through tonight. Winds fade to under 10 mph, but still
a seasonably chilly night. Previous forecast is in in good
shape.

Previous discussion...

Increasing clouds overnight with colder air filtering in.

Visible imagery shows stratocumulus clouds breaking up across
the mountains and foothills, with some sun beginning to peak
through the clouds. Stratus will continue to diminish this
afternoon with high pressure beginning to bow south into the
area behind a southward moving cold front. Another area of cloud
cover was affecting southside VA and the VA/NC piedmont and was
associated with the frontal passage. This stratocumulus field
will keep drifting south. NW winds are developing behind the
boundary with gusts to 15-20 mph, and should help clear clouds
out over the piedmont. Winds decrease to light and variable
overnight as high pressure build in. Additional cloud cover
arrives from the west overnight in advance of our weekend
system. Colder air will also push into the region, with
overnight lows in the 20s areawide.

NW winds veer to the NW and E over the next 24 hours. This will
be key to beginning to lock the cold air in place as it is
dammed along the higher terrain, setting the stage for winter
precipitation. A few snow/rain showers are possible Saturday,
mainly for southwestern VA, as boundary layer moisture increases
ahead of low pressure deepening in the Lower Mississippi Valley
region. Elsewhere it will stay mostly cloudy. High temperatures
Saturday will only increase about 10-12 degrees F.

Forecast confidence is high in the near term portion.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 230 PM EST Friday...

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Sunday and Sunday night.

The upper level low will be in the Mississippi River Valley
Saturday night, while high pressure passes over eastern Canada
and wedges southward along the Appalachian Mountains.

Models are all indicating that this system will become a winter
storm classified as a "Miller B" Saturday night into Sunday along
the southern Appalachian Mountains. What this classification means
is that the first low from this system will decay as it stays west
of the mountains, while a new low spins up closer to the East Coast
and becomes the dominant low for this system. All precipitation
should start as snow during early Sunday morning. Precipitation type
becomes more complicated Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. As the
coastal low center takes control, it will bring a surge of warm air
over the Piedmont that should prompt a transition to a wintry mix of
sleet and freezing rain in the afternoon. How far into the forecast
area the warm pushes remains a question. Am concern with 12z NAM
solution trimming snow amounts back. Would like to see another run
of solutions to place deformation zone. The placement and track of
the low center and push of warm area are critical to totals. Once
the coastal low pulls away from the Mid Atlantic on Sunday night,
the sleet and freezing rain would go back to snow, but there will be
a sizable dry slot pushing northward to end the precipitation.

The greatest snowfall accumulations appear to reside along the
northwest North Carolina mountains and the Interstate 81 corridor,
because these areas will see the precipitation stay as all snow
during the storm. Model continues to show the potential for up to a
foot of snow in these areas with locally higher amounts possible if
some mesoscale banding occurs. Snow totals will be decreased where
mixing occurs with sleet and freezing rain. It is looking like east
of a line from Reidsville to Lynchburg where notable sleet and ice
accumulations may occur on top of the snow.

Travel will be significantly impacted during this storm, and
there might be a few downed trees and power outages. Travel
impacts will continue into Monday as northwest winds increase
due to the tightening pressure gradient between the deepening
coastal low passing over the Northeast and high pressure
building over the Gulf Coast. Winds may gust up to 40 MPH along
the higher terrain, which could cause blowing and drifting snow.
Upslope snow showers will persist from Boone to Lewisburg
through Monday. Wind chills should fall into the single digits
in the mountains by Monday night as the upslope snow showers
gradually fade.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 230 PM EST Friday...

High pressure should bring drier weather for Tuesday, then another
cold front approaches and moves through Midweek.

High pressure will build over the Southeast Tuesday. The high center
will slide east Tuesday night into Wednesday. As the high builds in
Tuesday, winds should continue to subside by Tuesday night. Snow
pack should keep temperatures on the colder side of model guidance.
With the high pushing east into the Atlantic ocean, the flow will
turn towards the southwest Wednesday with warm advection. Another
area of low pressure should develop in the Southeast by Wednesday
night and could bring more chances of rain or snow, but the moisture
appears limited at this time. The weather will remain unsettled
Thursday. Then, it should head offshore Thursday night into Friday
with the winds becoming breezy again from the northwest.

&&

.AVIATION /23Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 605 PM EST Friday...

MVFR conditions will impact BLF for the entire TAF period, with
potential IFR, with LWB having MVFR at times as well. Other
sites will be VFR with northwest winds diminishing.

A disturbance Sat afternoon ahead of Sunday's storm may bring a
light snow to some of the mountain taf sites, but should not be
much and will impact everyone along/west of the Blue Ridge with
MVFR ceilings in the afternoon.

Forecast confidence is above average, except average for cigs at
LWB/BLF overnight.

.Extended Aviation Discussion...

A winter storm will impact the Mid Atlantic beginning early
Sunday. Poor flying conditions and accumulating snow is likely
for all terminals, though DAN/LYH could see some icing as well.
Sleet may mix in as far west as ROA/BCB. The main system departs
Sunday night with upslope snow showers persisting west of the
ROA/BCB, possibly impact ROA/BCB some. Winds will be gusty
behind the storm, and expect sub-VFR conditions into Monday in
the mountains, while the piedmont returns to VFR.

Tuesday should be mainly VFR. A cold front Wednesday may
introduce lower clouds and light rain and snow to BLF, BCB,
ROA, and LWB by the afternoon hours before pushing east. Winds
Tuesday and Wednesday will be southwesterly with gusts to 20kts.
