Dry but becoming slightly windy with a frontal passage.

This will be a quiet day ahead of our next winter storm which
arrives later Thursday. Winds are currently turning more out of
the south-southwest this morning, and this trend will continue
as a low pressure trough organizes over the Great Lakes. As high
pressure edges east out of the area, a cold front will arrive
this evening. Only expecting increasing cloud cover and a wind
shift out of this boundary- no precipitation. Satellite imagery
is already showing preliminary clouds arriving ahead of the
trough. Overall moisture/ PWATs increase to about a third of an
inch today, before falling behind the FROPA once again tonight.

The only concern for this part of the forecast will be an
increasing LLJ and pressure gradient associated with the FROPA
tonight. This will bring some gusty winds to the surface-
especially for the higher peaks, which may see a few hours of
30-40 mph gusts tonight and into the early morning hours
Thursday. However we should stay below wind advisory criteria.

Highs today will be slightly warmer than yesterday in warm air
advection ahead of the front, and should actually be pretty
close to normal with the tempering effect of increasing cloud
cover. Expecting mid 30s to mid 40s along and west of the Blue
Ridge, and upper 40s to lower 50s for the piedmont of VA and NC.
Tonight, lows will be in the mid 20s to lower 30s for most
spots.

Confidence in the near term portion of the forecast is high.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 405 AM EST Wednesday...

     Another round of accumulating snow Thursday night into
Friday...

Not much change in regards to our upcoming winter weather event
Thursday night into Friday from the current 00z model suite. The
system appears to be a bit slower at the onset and a little
further south bringing higher confidence for accumulating snow
greater than 3 inches for portions of our area including
southeast West Virginia and the Alleghany Highlands region. With
that said, went ahead and hoisted a WInter Storm Watch for
these aforementioned areas since they look to meet the criteria
due largely in part to higher snow ratios and the potential for
banding during the entirety of the event.

Synoptically the setup remains the same with a potent shortwave
pivoting around a broad upper level trough sinking south into
the Ohio River Valley. This piece of energy will team up with
an area of low pressure riding north into the central
Appalachains region. The tilt of the trough from the incoming
shortwave plus the placement of low will put us in a favorable
zone of dynamical lift/moisture transport Thursday night into
early Friday morning as the storm system passes through.

The track is eerily similar to what we saw earlier in the week
on January 3rd, 2022. The only difference this time is the fact
the ground temperatures and antecedent air mass are much colder
allowing for primarily an all snow event. Operational and
ensemble guidance continues to show a period of rain or even
wintry mix at the onset of the event as the atmospheric column
moistens from top to bottom. This will be brief with a quick
change to snow as evaporational cooling takes hold especially in
areas west of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Further east into the
Virginia/North Carolina Piedmont it may take until midnight for
the rain to change to snow limiting overall totals in these
locations.

Areas such as southeast West Virginia, Tazewell County, and
Bath County look to see anywhere between 3 to 6 inches of snow.
1 to 3 inch amounts are likely along the Blue Ridge Parkway from
the Grayson Highlands and New River Valley north into the
Roanoke/Shenandoah Valley. Further east into the Piedmont
amounts of a dusting to an inch are possible due largely in part
to rain at the onset and the quickness of the system moving
through. Some locations south of US-58 may see nothing at all
when it comes to snow. These totals are representative as a
first guess since we are still 36+ hours out from the storm. A
little wiggle in track could mean slightly more or slightly less
on the amounts.

The storm system quickly races north and east Friday morning
into Friday afternoon allowing precip to end from south to
north as high pressure builds in. With the low moving northeast
and the high building nearby our pressure gradient will remain
tight allowing for a brief period of gutsy winds Friday morning
into Friday afternoon. Wind chills as a result will tank into
the single digits and potentially below zero during this time
and again FRiday night as winds lighten.

Highs Thursday will remain seasonable with mid to upper 30s over
the mountains to low to mid 40s out east with southerly flow
out ahead of the incoming low. Temperatures crash into the mid
to upper teens and 20s as winds switch to the west and northwest
Thursday night into Friday morning. Many locations struggle to
even push freezing Friday before the big plunge into the single
digits and low teens.

Confidence remains moderate in the short term period. Any subtle
differences in the placement of shortwave energy and the
incoming low pressure will alter snowfall amounts during the
Thursday night and Friday timeframe.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 405 AM EST Monday...

     Cold high pressure starts the weekend before our next chance
for precipitation arrives with a front Sunday...

It's a cold start to the upcoming weekend given existing snow
cover and high pressure overhead. 850mb temperatures Saturday
morning looks to sit between -10 to -18 degrees C yielding wake
up numbers in the single digits for many locations Saturday
morning. Temperatures due rebound Saturday afternoon as high
pressure gradually pushes north and east toward Atlantic coast
increasing south to south to southwesterly flow. Warm air
advection increases Saturday night along with moisture transport
from the Gulf of Mexico in advance of our next front and low
pressure system to round out the weekend.

The 00z GFS and Euro show subtle differences in regards to
timing and precipitation type during the onset of this event.
The 00z GFS is a bit colder and slower on precipitation arrival
late Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon. The 00z ECMWF is a
bit faster and warmer leading to a primarily rain event. Went
with a blend of the two model solutions bringing precipitation
into the region late Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon. Left
a brief window for a snow/wintry mix at the onset of the event
before a transition to all rain as temperatures look to warm.

Precipitation gradually exits the region Sunday night into
Monday as colder air rushes back in. Any leftover moisture may
witch back to a brief period of snow in the mountains Sunday
night into Monday morning before the drier air wins out with
incoming high pressure settling in. Gusty northwest winds appear
possible during Monday and may not abate until Tuesday when
high pressure returns. Temperatures should dive once again by
Tuesday morning, but there may be too much mixing to really
allow as significant a plunge.

.AVIATION /12Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 410 AM EST Wednesday...

VFR conditions are expected to prevail through the TAF cycle,
with a MVFR ceilings affecting KDAN briefly this morning. There
a small chance of some sub-VFR ceilings along and east of a
KW78-KOV4 line late the next couple of hours. These clouds may
be accompanied by some patchy drizzle or freezing drizzle.

Winds will increase to around 10kts from the SSW today with some
gusts to around 20 kts. Prior to the winds increasing this
morning, we could see some low level wind shear at KROA and KBCB
with a strong low level jet still above light surface winds.

Confidence in the above aviation scenario is high.

A low pressure system will bring rain and snow to all terminals
Thursday night into Friday morning. Ceilings will be LIFR-IFR
with periods of MVFR and variable visibilities. Higher snowfall
accumulations will be in the Blue Ridge mountains, but all
terminals may see snow. Winds will become WNW and gusty during
this time as well.

Saturday will be VFR ahead of the next weather system Sunday.
