AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Charleston WV
1258 PM EST Sat Jan 15 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
A winter storm Sunday into Monday with significant snow
accumulations likely.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 1240 PM Saturday...
Models continue to show a major winter storm moving into the
region on Sunday. There are differences between the models in
several critical areas, including a warm layer aloft in eastern
portions of the area, location of the heavier precipitation
amounts, and timing of the precipitation beginning.
Regarding the warm layer aloft, think that will be mainly
confined to the southeastern counties and will be rather brief,
based on the track of the main system and the dynamic cooling
from heavy snow. This could allow for a period of sleet or
freezing rain on Sunday, cutting slightly into the snow totals
in the southeastern counties.
Regarding the location of the heavier precipitation, numerous
models are starting to focus on northeastern Kentucky and west
central West Virginia for heavy snow Sunday afternoon. Have
upped the snow amounts some in that area, but the potential
exists for even higher amounts. There are some models that do
not hit this area as hard, hence the edging up toward the higher
amounts and not committing fully.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 455 AM Saturday...
A low pressure system over the southeastern US will track northeast
into the Mid-Atlantic region on Sunday, with precipitation chances
increasing throughout the day as the system approaches and then
crosses through. Precipitation associated with this system should
start off as snow, then a warm nose edges into the area allowing for
a period of rain, freezing rain, or a wintry mix during the day
Sunday. A transition back to all snow will then occur as cold air
advection begins Sunday night into Monday.
Precipitation lessens on Monday as the system continues to progress
north towards New England; however, a shortwave that swings into the
area out of the northern plains brings additional moisture which
should maintain light snow showers much of the day. Coverage of snow
showers will diminish overnight, with some light snow lingering in
the mountains.
Ice accumulations generally under a tenth of an inch are
possible on Sunday. Snow accumulations of 4+" are expected
across the area, with amounts around 8-9" in the higher
elevations. However, due to the uncertainty of precipitation
type on Sunday, these amounts are subject to change. Snow is
expected to be wet and heavy which may result in power outages.
&&
.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 1115 AM Saturday...
Still could have a few lingering snow showers or areas of
drizzle across parts of the north and east early Tuesday, but
overall, a brief period of drier weather will take hold.
However, by Wednesday, a low pressure system will move east
across the Great Lakes region, sweeping a cold front across the
area late in the day Wednesday and Wednesday night. Mainly rain
can be expected to start the period, but post frontal snow
showers can be expected to end the extended period. Overall
accumulations look to be fairly light at this point.
&&
.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 1250 PM Saturday...
For this afternoon, MVFR conditions can be expected along the
mountains, with mainly VFR elsewhere.
For tonight, MVFR conditions are possible along the eastern
slopes of the mountains, with VFR elsewhere.
For Sunday, Ceilings and visibilities will be collapsing from
south to north as heavy snow moves into the region. Winds along
the mountains will become strong and gusty.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND ALTERNATE SCENARIOS THROUGH 18Z SUNDAY...
