Very complicated forecast on our doorstep, as multiple variables
are leading to a wide snow forecast range.

First, the current shortwave passing through is bringing light
precipitation to a large part of the state. Accumulations have
been minimal so far, but most areas east of the Divide have seen
precip alternate between rain and snow. This has been enough to
wet some roads down across the Bighorn Basin, and will continue
for the I-25 and I-90 corridor this afternoon. Once temps begin to
fall this afternoon, there is concern that roads will freeze
quickly, bringing a fast chance in travel conditions. Motorists in
these locations are advised to take extra precautions through the
night tonight.

Tightening gradient between systems will be tight enough Sunday,
along with an approaching 120+kt jet, will bring a gusty wind day
to central WY and the Winds and Absarokas. Gusts around CPR could
reach 50kts during the afternoon, while higher elevations to the
west could be reaching 60 to 70kts. High Wind Warnings have been
hoisted for those areas for the day Sunday.

Then we shift our focus to the next more potent weather system
sliding in from the PacNW. As the broad trough slowly dives
southeast along the west coast, flow off the Pacific will be
enough to bring moisture east across the western mountains. With
the through dropping southward, the period of moisture into the
Tetons would not be especially long before the trough axis passed,
focused on Monday morning. Not all models are in agreement on the
trough, with the NAM slower and deeper, which would bring a longer
period of snow to the west. Feel that models are underestimating
the precip totals so far, have been underforecasting so far this
winter, and have already been trending upwards, so have pushed
snowfall forecast upwards. Have added Winter Storm Watches for NW
WY starting Sunday afternoon for the threat of significant
snowfall. Needless to say, with so many different variables at
odds and so much uncertainty, forecast confidence remains lowered
on this system.

Beyond this system, the cold front barrels southward Monday night
into Tuesday, with temperatures Tuesday staying steady in the
single digits and lower teens, before dropping well below zero
Tuesday night. Lighter westerly flow will pick back up Wednesday
and continue through the rest of the week, bringing a continuous
light snow pattern to the western mountains.

West of the Divide...KBPI/KJAC/KPNA/KRKS Terminals.

Light snow with IFR conditions continues through the next few
hours at KJAC. Light snow showers will also be possible at KBPI
and KPNA through the afternoon. A few snow showers could also
develop around KRKS this afternoon and evening. Occasional MVFR
conditions are possible in snow showers at KBPI, KPNA, and KRKS
through 00Z. After 00Z this evening, all terminals are expected to
see VFR conditions through the remainder of the TAF period.
Mountain obscurations are expected to prevail through the period,
however.

East of the Divide...KCOD/KCPR/KLND/KRIW/KWRL Terminals.

KCOD and KWRL will see light showers through this afternoon. A warm
layer aloft will keep these as rain showers through the early part
of the afternoon, but rain will change over to snow later during the
afternoon towards sunset as a cold front slides through the region.
Brief MVFR conditions are possible as precipitaion switches over to
snow, with greatest confidence in this at KWRL late this afternoon.
Snow showers will be possible at KCPR, KLND, and KRIW terminals
during the late afternoon and early evening as well. Greatest
confidence exists at KCPR in MVFR to IFR conditions developing with
these snow showers. Mountain obscurations are expected across the
region through the TAF period. All sites are expected to see VFR
conditions prevail after 05Z this evening through the rest of the
TAF period.

High Wind Warnings in effect Sunday for 280, 286, 288, and 289 for
gusty winds ramping up between systems. Lower elevations in
central and southern WY will be gusting 40 to 50 during the
afternoon, with higher elevations gusts of 70 to 80. After today's
snowfall, the next more potent system arrives in NW WY Sunday
afternoon, with significant snowfall amounts expected.
