Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night

There is a LOT to talk about today. So, this discussion may end up
being the great American weather novel. In addition, there will
be contrast between West and East of the Divide. So, we will split
the discussion that way.

West of the Divide...Today will be the quietest period of the short
term. Ridging will hold on for about 12 to 18 more hours and bring
dry conditions and near normal temperatures, although there will be
a bit more a breeze in the north than previous days. Then, after
being down for maintenance, the snow machine will likely switch on
again for the rest of the period. A pair of waves will be the
weather makers. The first one looks like the appetizer. This system
has plenty of jet support, with the area in the left front quadrant
of an 150 knot jet streak. The limiting factor will be that it is a
fast mover so it will not be able to pile up snow over a long
period. The advisory may be a bit quick on the draw, but we will
leave it as is. The heaviest snow will fall after midnight through
the morning. The real epicenter would be between 3 and 9 am, when
the best jet dynamics and trough axis should maximize left. There
could be some heavy snowfall rates though, over an inch an hour at
times during the time frame.The region gets into the unfavorable
side of the jet after noon and snow should become lighter for around
12 hours or so.

The southern portions of the area will then be in the right front
quadrant of the jet, the downward forcing portion. This will make
things favorable for strong to high wind. Most models show 700
millibar winds climbing to 50 knots or over Tuesday with both the
NAM and GFS having sustained high wind at Rock Springs. As a result,
we have hoisted a high wind watch across Sweetwater and southern
Lincoln county starting Tuesday morning and continuing through
Wednesday. There will be a lull in the winds Tuesday night after
trough passage and the winds decouple for a time.

The second system then moves in for late Tuesday night into
Wednesday. This system looks to have more moisture to work with and
will be longer lasting. As a result, amounts look higher. There will
also be wind with it, so more highlights will likely be needed. With
the higher amounts, I could see the potential for warnings. Like the
previous system, this one will be heavily jet driven, with another
140 knot jet max moving into the area. The models are in fairly good
agreement with the best forcing during Wednesday morning, then the
best dynamics and trough axis move through. Again, there could be
some rather heavy snowfall rates during this time, possibly over an
inch an hour at times. The snow from this one should taper off
around sundown Wednesday, with another short break for Wednesday
night. Now for the windy side of the system.

After a lull, high winds will likely come back across the south on
Wednesday as the second system moves through. Ingredients are the
same, with 700 millibar winds approaching 60 knots and downward
forcing from the right front quadrant of the jet. The NAM has 45
knots sustained at Rock Springs on Wednesday, although this guidance
does tend to be a bit overcooked this far out. It does look like a
good bet for high wind though. It could even see watches a bit
further north toward the Green River Basin but not enough confidence
to include at this time. Wind should then begin to decrease
Wednesday night as the trough moves away, but may stay gusty much of
the night.

East of the Divide...The main concern for the first part of the
period here is wind. We have some borderline high winds this
morning, but this is only along Wyoming Boulevard and no where else
right now. Mid level winds do decrease somewhat today, so the wind
should subside somewhat. So, we will not issue any warnings for
today at this time. Things change tonight as the system that was
mentioned in the novel I wrote above approaches the area. This will
tighten the pressure gradient across the area. With 700 millibar
winds again approaching 50 to 55 knots across more of the area, we
have hoisted a high wind watch for the wind prone areas in the Green
Mountains and Natrona County starting tonight and continuing into
Tuesday afternoon. This is when an Arctic Front should shut off the
wind. More on that below.

The first Pacific system will then begin to cross the Divide early
Tuesday morning. As for snow from the first system, there could be
some across mainly the north as it moves in. Most of the area is on
the wrong side of the jet though, so we kept POPs and QPF low for
the time being. The best chance of some accumulation would be in
Johnson County where some moisture may over run an advancing back
door Arctic Boundary on Tuesday afternoon. Combined with gusty
winds, things could get nasty here for a time. But even here,
confidence is low. The snow is likely to be banded and very hard to
pinpoint a few hours out, let along more than 24 hours.

And speaking of the Arctic front, it will slowly slide through the
area, setting up near the Continental Divide by Wednesday. This will
make temperature forecasting a nightmare. A place like Buffalo,
which will see it first, may end up with falling temperatures on
Tuesday, ending up in the single digits by sunset. Meanwhile, a
place like Riverton, with a gusty wind ahead of it, may rise into
the 40s ahead of the front. So confidence is low here.

And the final chapter will be when the second and more potent
system crosses the Divide on Wednesday. This will bring a much
better chance of snow to many areas. However, there is still much
uncertainty with the details. This will be jet driven, not like our
usual upslope situation. And these snows are the banded variety. And
as a result, very hard to nail down exactly where, especially more
than 48 hours out. Most areas should have a decent chance of some
though, so we went with likely POPs for most locations. At this
time, the best guess would be from around Cody southeastward through
Casper. But, there is still a fair amount of model disagreement
since it all depends on the jet position and a 50 mile change can
make a big difference. It could get nasty though with a dry, powdery
snow and gusty winds blowing it around though. Quieter weather
should move in for a brief period Wednesday night as the system
moves away.

.LONG TERM...Thursday through Sunday

After a couple of bouts of significant snow mainly over the west in
the short-term, there looks to be a good chance of another round of
significant snow across the west in the Thursday and Thursday
night time frame.

A moist, westerly isentropic upglide, upper level jet dynamics, and
weak disturbances in the flow could result in significant snow over
the west Thursday into Thursday night. Some snow could spill east
of the Divide, but only minor snow accumulations are expected.
Strong to possibly high wind could occur in typical spots from
eastern Sweetwater County northeast to Natrona County, as well as
the Absaroka Mountains. The Arctic air mass is expected to begin
retreating away from the area Thursday into Friday. Medium range
models tend to be too fast on warming temperatures especially in
trapped basins/valleys where a very strong surface inversion
should be in place. Have cooled temperatures in basins/valleys
Thursday and Friday, but kept a warm up in typical wind prone
areas.

A moist westerly flow will keep good chances of snow over the far
west/northwest Friday, before a trough pulls across the area
Friday night and Saturday. As this occurs light to moderate
snowfall is expected with the greatest impact over the west. This
snowfall will also be aided by right-rear dynamics from a strong
upper jet. In wake of this trough, models currently show a dry
conditions late Saturday night and Sunday.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday morning)

East of the Divide...KCOD/KCPR/KLND/KRIW/KWRL Terminals

VFR conditions will occur through the period with increasing mid to
high-level cloudiness. The main issue will be windy west to
southwest flow on the lee side of mountain ranges, and from South
Pass to Natrona County including KCPR. Breezy winds are also
expected at times at KCOD. If winds are not westerly or become
light, there will be strong westerly low-level wind shear at KCOD
especially tonight.

West of the Divide...KBPI/KJAC/KPNA/KRKS Terminals

VFR conditions are expected through at least 00Z with an
increasing mid to high-level cloud. Snow is expected to begin
developing over the far west between 03Z and 06Z Tuesday with
lowering ceilings especially at KJAC. MVFR ceilings and IFR
visibility in snow are expected to develop over the far west
(including KJAC) between 04Z and 08Z Tuesday. Once these
conditions develop they are expected to remain in place for the
rest of the TAF period. Farther southeast into the Upper Green
River Basin, some snow showers are expected, but confidence is
only high enough to insert some VCSH at KBPI and KPNA. KRKS will
remain dry with mainly light winds through the period.

High pressure will bring one more dry day today. A gusty, to at
times, strong wind will continue from the Red Desert through Casper
and in the lee of the Absarokas. Relative humidity should remain

poor. A weather system will bring snow to the west late tonight into
Tuesday morning. High winds are likely across southern Wyoming and
Natrona County on Tuesday.

Strong winds are likely from the Red Desert through Casper and in
the Lee of the Absarokas.

Snow returning to the western mountains tonight. The heaviest
snow is expected after 2 am.

High winds are possible from the Green Mountains through Natrona
County tonight. Please see High Wind Watch for details.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday.

Tuesday...Snow continuing over the far west, tapering off in the
afternoon. A chance of light snow in northern Wyoming Tuesday.
Strong winds possible in Johnson County.

Strong to potentially high winds in southern Wyoming and Natrona
County. Please see High Wind Watch for details.

Tuesday Night into Wednesday...Significant snow possible over the
west with accumulating snow potential east of the Divide
Wednesday. High winds possible across Sweetwater and southern
Lincoln Counties.

Thursday and Friday...Significant snow is probable at times over
the west especially Thursday into Thursday evening based on
current data.

Saturday...Chances of snow continue mainly over the west.
