Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 415 AM MST Mon Dec 12 2022 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Wednesday night) Issued at 415 AM MST Mon Dec 12 2022 Water vapor imagery shows two upper lows in the overall longwave trough. There is one over south-central California and the other one over southern Idaho. These features will slowly push eastward today, before jumping the Continental Divide tonight with a strong surface low developing over eastern Colorado. A cold front will push across the region today. Areas of snow across the west will continue today, but quickly taper off as the system crosses the Divide. Snow will breakout east of the Divide by around midday from a combination of strong quasi-geostrophic forcing, and some isentropic upglide over the front today. Tonight and Tuesday, the forcing will transition to more upslope flow, and wrap around moisture from this slow moving upper low. The best upslope flow will be across Lander Foothills and southern Bighorn Basin tonight, and then over Natrona County late tonight into Tuesday. The flow backs to the northwest Tuesday night which should result in the snow becoming lighter around the Casper area. The snow on Wednesday is expected over the far east, but should be mainly light. Models have generally trended with slightly more snow, and have upgraded the Green Mountains and Rattlesnake Range (zone 19), and added eastern Sweetwater County into a warning. Have extended the far east through the day Wednesday for the additional light snow, and for the strong winds over Johnson County which could result in blizzard conditions. Northern Johnson County might need to be upgraded to a blizzard warning, but will let the day shift take another look at it. .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Sunday) Issued at 415 AM MST Mon Dec 12 2022 Snow showers will linger Thursday mainly over northern portions and Natrona County. Snow showers may be enhanced as a shortwave trough will try to make its way down from Canada. A ridge looks to develop over the PACNW which will help guide in potentially the coldest air of the season so far behind the shortwave. Starting Friday night overnight lows look to drop well below 0 especially if there is more than a few inches of snow depth. Highs during the day Saturday/Sunday may struggle to get out of the single digits for some.
