.SYNOPSIS...
After a couple days of dry and milder conditions, another chance
of showers returns Saturday afternoon and night, with a much
stronger and colder early winter storm impacting the region
Sunday night into the middle of next week. Heavy snowfall amounts
far greater than the amounts from the storm earlier this week are
expected in the Sierra, and also possible for lower elevations.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
We'll have a short break before storm activity ramps up again,
producing a "Snow-vember" for the Sierra and even for many lower
elevations from early-mid next week.
Today will see a decent jump in daytime temperatures with highs
about 15 degrees warmer than yesterday in most areas, except for
areas well north of I-80, where thicker cloud cover will limit the
warmup to about 10 degrees above yesterday.
Light rain will arrive late tonight into Saturday morning for
northeast CA-far northwest NV ahead of a weaker leading system
dropping in from the north. This will be a relatively warm precip
event with snow levels mainly between 8000-9000 feet when the main
moisture band arrives to the Sierra Saturday afternoon. A weak
upper disturbance within this moisture band should allow a short
period of light rain to spread into western NV Saturday night,
although amounts are likely to be 0.10" or less in most lower
elevations. For eastern CA, amounts between 0.10-0.30" are
anticipated, with up to 0.75" possible near the crest. Snow
levels may dip to near 7000 feet toward the end of the event early
Sunday morning, although snow accumulations are most likely to be
limited to above 8000 feet with 1-4" possible. Winds will
increase Saturday afternoon-evening but not to very impactful
levels, with gusts mainly 30-40 mph in lower elevations and up to
70 mph for Sierra ridges.
The main effect of this weak initial system will be blazing a
trail for a much stronger low to drop in from the Gulf of Alaska
to near the Pacific Northwest coast late Sunday into Monday, then
digging into northern CA and eventually pushing inland across CA-
NV for the Tuesday-Wednesday time frame. This looks to be a
classic winter storm setup with near 100% probability of heavy
Sierra snowfall of at least 2 feet above 7000 feet and at least 1
foot down to 5500-6000 feet including the Tahoe basin, western
Lassen/Plumas counties and Mono County from US-395 westward--
spread over the Sunday night-Wednesday time frame. However, the
mid-range projections indicated in the Winter Storm Watch are
quite higher, calling for 1-3 feet down to 5500-6000 foot
elevations and 2-4 feet above 7000 feet. High end scenarios show
possibility of 3+ feet around parts of the Tahoe basin and 6+ feet
near the Sierra crest. Fluctuations in the storm's track would
determine whether the highest totals hit the Tahoe basin or
Alpine/Mono counties, and if the higher-end scenarios pan out. We
already saw plenty of travel headaches over the passes earlier
this week with a lower-end storm by Sierra standards. The
magnitude of travel impacts will escalate from Sunday night
through at least Tuesday, as a relatively short 1-2 hour trip in
good weather could take 5+ times longer with life-threatening
conditions outside and uncomfortable conditions inside a vehicle
going nowhere for long time periods.
For lower elevations of far eastern CA-western NV, the prospect
for accumulating snowfall is also nearly certain, but the variable
track scenarios would have more effect on amounts. If the low
digs farther offshore it could induce more of a south flow that
would reduce moisture spilling over from the Sierra and reduce
snow totals. However, if the low digs near the coast it could
throw a steady stream of moisture directly over the main cities
and even east into the Basin and Range, with potential for much
greater snow amounts (1 foot or more is not out of the question--
about 15-20% probability) especially if the enhanced moisture
pushes occur at night.
The higher confidence portion of this forecast is with the initial
cold front passage late Sunday night, which will likely produce a
changeover from rain to snow with enhanced snowfall rates
impacting the Monday AM commute. Then we'll be awaiting the
eventual storm track--the more aggressive scenarios could produce
widespread travel impacts for the Monday-Wednesday AM commutes,
and also the PM commutes as the time change Saturday night will
result in sunset times before 5 PM next week. Even with the less
aggressive scenarios, expect at least one day of messy weather-
induced traffic conditions in the urban areas, and plan ahead for
alternatives to the standard commute routine if possible.
Winds will also be making their presence known for the early
stages of this storm especially Sunday afternoon into early Monday
morning from US-50 northward, and into the daytime hours south of
US-50. Projected maximum gusts of 35-50 mph are anticipated for
most lower elevations, with 50-70 mph gusts in wind prone areas
and around 100 mph for Sierra ridges.
Snow shower bands could continue through Wednesday, depending on
how quickly the low progress inland. Later next week there
appears to be a short break in the storm action, with another
relatively cold but less intense storm possible for part of the
Veterans' Day weekend. Below average temperatures are likely to
prevail at least into mid-November. MJD

.AVIATION...
The best window for VFR flying conditions with generally light
winds in the upcoming week will be today into early Saturday,
although some MVFR ceilings with mountain obscurations will be
present this morning with a band of lower level moisture spreading
across eastern CA-western NV.
The next weather system for Saturday and Saturday night will
bring increased westerly winds with mountain wave turbulence and
periods of LLWS as ridge level winds approach 40-50 kts. The
winds will be followed by periods of light rain showers mainly
near the Sierra terminals (KTRK-KTVL) that may briefly change to
a mix of rain-snow with IFR conditions in lower VIS/CIG early
Sunday morning. All other terminals will have an increased chance
for light rain showers with brief periods of MVFR conditions in
lower ceilings Saturday evening into early Sunday morning.
A more intense storm system will likely produce widespread wind
and snow impacts to aviation concerns for all the main terminals
Sunday through Tuesday, possibly continuing into Wednesday. MJD
