.SYNOPSIS...

Weak low pressure will increase breezes this afternoon, with
stronger winds expected Monday as low pressure moves into the
Pacific Northwest. Above normal temperatures will rise to well
above normal late this coming week. Other than a few light rain
showers over far northeastern California Monday, dry conditions
are expected through this coming week.

.SHORT TERM...Through Tuesday Morning...

A calm and mainly clear morning out there. The first short-wave
trough that will affect our area today is nosing into Washington
and northern Oregon early this morning. This short-wave trough
will pass over Oregon and Idaho today, turning our surface winds
around from the west this afternoon and bringing some mid-and
high-level clouds across eastern California and western Nevada.
Wind speeds and gusts have continued a downward trend for this
afternoon. We're likely not looking at more than gusts on the
order of 20-30 mph with locally higher gusts to 35 mph regionwide.

Monday, an upper low will move from the Pacific Northwest across
the northern Intermountain West. While this is happening, a long-
wave ridge will build poleward into California. The effect of this
pattern will be a tightening of the height gradient over much of
the area, especially north of I-80. Winds look much more
significant Monday than this afternoon. We have hoisted a Wind
Advisory for Surprise Valley-Northern Washoe County, Lassen-
Eastern Plumas- Eastern Sierra Counties, and the Greater Reno-
Carson City-Minden Area from 11 AM to 8 PM Monday. NBM guidance
has stayed pretty steady over the past few runs, indicating a
30-50% chance of gusts over 45 mph near and south of I-80,
increasing to 60-85% north of I-80 across northeast California and
northwest Nevada. Well north of I-80, there is even a 35-50%
chance of wind gusts peaking over 55 mph Monday afternoon and
evening. Lake conditions will become unsafe Monday afternoon,
therefore a Lake Wind Advisory was issued for Lake Tahoe and
Pyramid Lake from 11 AM to 8 PM Monday. Travel for high-profile
vehicles is likely to be troublesome, especially in wind-prone
areas, as gusts reach 45-60 mph at times. Finally, blowing dust is
a good bet downwind of northeast California and Basin sinks/dry
lake beds as sustained winds reach 15-25 mph for many areas.

In addition to the wind risk, some spotty showers are also
possible across northeastern California and northwestern Nevada
Monday morning and afternoon.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through next weekend...

The main story in the long term will be the rapid increase in
temperatures for the end of the week driven by a strong ridge of
high pressure building rapidly over the west coast.

Temperatures on Tuesday will be a few degrees above normal
increasing to 15-20+ degrees above normal by Thursday and Friday.
This will put daytime highs in the low 70s in Sierra valleys and low
to mid 80s in western Nevada valleys. This will again bring
potential to break Reno daily record high temperatures on Thursday
and Friday, currently 85 and 82, respectively. Very warm
temperatures will be short lived with a system moving through the
Pacific Northwest over the weekend pushing temperatures back to near
normal for next weekend along with increased breezes.

Long range projections do show the potential for a fast-moving
spring storm that could bring some snow back to the region early
the following week. -Zach

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions today with increasing mid- and high-level clouds
this afternoon through Monday as a cold front moves through
Oregon. Winds will increase this afternoon with gusts to around
25-30 kts, mainly in Northwest NV. Winds will continue to increase
on Monday when when gusts could reach 35-45 kts, mainly north of
I-80. Expect periods of LLWS and turbulence down wind of the
Sierra this afternoon through Monday. -Zach
